The Chinese Lady
By LLOYD SUH
Directed by RALPH B. PEÑA
Co-Production with BARRINGTON STAGE COMPANY and MA-YI THEATER COMPANY
July 20-August 11
St. Germain Stage
Pittsfield, MA
In 1834, Afong Moy is brought to the United States from Beijing and put on display for the American public as the “Chinese Lady.” For many years, she performs in a side show that both defines and challenges her own view of herself. Inspired by the true story of America’s first female Chinese immigrant, playwright Lloyd Suh spins a tale of dark poetic whimsy in this piercing portrait of America as seen through the eyes of a young Chinese woman.

BerkshireSPEAKS, Ty Allan Jackson, Big Head Books
Ty Allan Jackson
Founder & Publisher of Big Head Books
Recorded: October 18, 2015, Hevreh of Southern Berkshires, Great Barrington MA
Ty Allan Jackson, a Bronx, New York, native who currently resides in the Berkshires after years of working in corporate sales, always felt he was meant to do more. In 2009, he was inspired by a question from his seven-year-old son: “Dad, can I open a lemonade stand?” Wanting to provide some educational stories about entrepreneurship for his son, Ty searched out resources, but few existed.
After having his manuscript rejected by more than 150 agents, Ty’s determination was kindled. He knew this book would be a much needed resource, which inspired him to launch his own publishing company in 2010: Big Head Books is a literacy organization with an educational and socially conscious mission. In just four years, in addition to Danny Dollar Millionaire, Ty published When I Close My Eyes, The Supadupa Kid, and You Are Amazing/I Am Amazing.
Due to the impact Ty has had as a publisher and author within his community in Pittsfield, in January 2012 he was honored as the first recipient of the Martin Luther King Jr. Content of Character Award. In the summer of 2012, Ty had one of his proudest moments since launching Big Head Books, when he had the opportunity to gift his books to First Lady Michelle Obama for Malia and Sasha.
Danny Dollar Millionaire: The Lemonade Escapade has been recognized by the largest African-American operated bank in the United States to be used as a tool to teach inner city youth about finance and bank accounts. In July of 2013 Ty Allan Jackson, F.U.L.L. (Families United Through the Love of Literacy) co-founder Eddie Taylor, and Big Head Books were bestowed with the “Berkshire Trendsetter Award” for promoting literacy.

You Can't Eat That Fish
You Can't Eat That Fish: The City that GE Brought to Life, Then Left Behind
My brother and I went upriver from our cousins' old house that still sits atop a hill in Lee, Massachusetts. We sought to learn what the Berkshires had weathered over the last 100 years, which stemmed from Pittsfield. Lee is similar to Pittsfield, and Ethan Zuckerman, one who still resides in the area, put it best, There are two kinds of towns in the Berkshires -- mill towns and orchid towns. The orchid towns -- Lenox, Stockbridge, Great Barrington -- are in the culture business, delivering picturesque food and lodging to tourists who come to see the theater and hear the symphony. The mill towns [Lee, Pittsfield, North Adams], for the most part, are no longer in business.
Through childhood we looked from the house atop the hill and viewed the Housatonic River's rapids parade along neglected mill structures. Little mills, representing smaller companies, were in Lee and Pittsfield both; Pittsfield also had GE.
You can tell that a light once shined in the entire area, and in some ways in various places, a light still does. That light being, bluntly, life. A librarian voluntarily expressed her feelings upon noticing us search the collection of GE-related materials at a Pittsfield library (it was clear that their 'GE Selection' was the library's most extensive), and though it was a short exchange, it is though entire the city had united behind her words of GE being very big here. Al Bertelli even claimed that GE still operates the city.
There is a primitive sense of promise when you study Pittsfield for a long enough period of time. Perhaps the city is capable of rising back, akin to the success stories you hear of Pawtucket, Rhode Island or Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. But this would be a less dramatic rise; it would be growth reaching to a measured level of stability, not the double-or-nothing type of life that GE brought.
