The Basilica of Our Lady of Mercy, Barcelona, Spain (Basílica de la Mercè)
Mother Church of the Mercedarians. During the 12th and 13th Centuries, both the persistent Muslim invasions and their pirate activity in important sea routes caused many citizens of Catalonia and Aragon to become captives, chained behind bars and kept far away from their motherland and families. According to an ancient and pious tradition on the night of August 1, 1218, the Mother of God appeared to Peter Nolasco asking him to found a religious-military order for the redemption of the captives. With the permission of King James I, Bishop Melchior de Palou authorized the creation of this Order, which was solemnly commissioned a few days later on the altar of Barcelona's Cathedral. He also granted them with the royal coat of arms: the four red bars under a silver cross on a red background from Barcelona's Cathedral.
A few years later, in 1232, Ramon de Plegamans gave one of his properties to Peter Nolasco, where a modest convent and a small church were built. In 1249, the bishop authorized them to build a public church dedicated to the Virgin, next to La Ribera convent.
During the middle of the 14th century construction began on a Gothic Church with side chapels, all being completed at the beginning of the 15th Century. The construction of the current Baroque building started in 1765, designed by architect Josep Mas i Dordal. In 1918, Pope Benedict XV granted the title of Minor Basilica to this Merce church on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the apparition of the Virgin.

Basilica de la Merced. BARCELONA, SPAIN. Why this Church/Basilica is so Important?
This basilica plays an important role in the city of Barcelona. With it's patron Virgin Maria de la Merced a 14th Century old image. it's so old that it is still standing at this time. It gives me a feeling of soul searching and solemnity. I truly recommend this church if you are into soul searching.

Basilica de la Mercé: August 11, 2018: Wow what an amazing week this has been. Not only have we been in heaven celebrating our 800th anniversary of the foundation of our Order in Barcelona, but also Fathers Joseph and Daniel, some of our dear Third Order ladies, along with Mercedarian Sisters, and a Knight of Mercy made a visit to the celebrated Basilica de la Mercé. Saint Peter Nolasco, the founder of our Order was given this property of Raymond de Plegamans in 1232. It is located by the seashore, and which became our own hospital and our redeeming center. Construction of the current baroque building began in 1765, virtually destroyed in the Spanish Civil War, it was rebuilt following the war. Present within is the oldest known image of the Our Lady of Mercy dating back to the 1400s. The tomb of Saint Mary of Cervellon is also located here. Saint Mary is the Foundress of the Mercedarian Nuns. We were blessed with the special privilege of viewing her incorrupt body. Also, Saint John Bosco and José Maria Escriva visited this holy place. All praise to our most loving and compassionate Savior and his tender Mother, Our Lady of Mercy.

The Cathedral Church Basilica of Barcelona: What a truly awesome celebration of our Order’s 800th anniversary of Foundation in the Barcelona Cathedral over the altar of St. Eulalia where exactly 800 years ago on this very day August 10, 1218, our Founder, St. Peter Nolasco offered his life to God to redeem the captives. Fr. Fernando Ruiz was so gracious to us for all these days patiently explaining so beautifully the history of our Order and our relationship to the Cathedral. Also, the youth who made the Way of Nolasco received their Mercedrian shields in a dedication ceremony with the Provincial of Aragon, Father Juan José presiding in lower crypt church of Saint Eulalia, below the main altar. No footage of the glorious mass, as the videographer was concelebrating.

“Our Lady of Montserrat” Roman Catholic Church is located high on a ridge of the Central Range in the village of Tortuga, facing westward towards the Gulf of Paria. It is a wooden church, which was built by its first priest and architect, Fr. Marie Jules Dupoux, and blessed on December 24, 1878. The church was named after the Montserrat Hills on which it stands, a name given by the Spanish settlers who named the area after the Montserrat Mountains of Catalonia, in the region of Barcelona, Spain. Over 135 years old and arguably the oldest church in Trinidad and Tobago, the church of Our Lady of Montserrat is also well known as a Shrine to Our Lady. A special festival is held every year on the Sunday nearest the 8th September and is attended by hundreds of patrons from all over Trinidad.
This church is well known in Trinidad and Tobago for its interesting architecture, the panoramic and breath-taking view of the Gulf of Paria and most of all for the wooden figure of the Black Virgin, built by a Spanish saint maker following the Spanish Colonial Folk Art style. No one knows when the statue was brought to Tortuga and it is assumed that Capuchin missionaries brought it to the parish. The church is also sometimes called the Church of Many Statues because it has statues of some 19 saints donated over the years by wealthy cocoa plantation owners. Beautiful stained glass windows, bought in France over 100 years ago adorn the three altars of the church. Also of great historical interest are the hand-painted “Stations of the Cross”, mounted in beautiful frames made of oak.
A restoration project was started in May 2001 and is now complete and the church re-occupied on Sunday 8th September, 2002, the festival day.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Victory has quite the historical and spiritual connection to the revelation of the Miraculous Medal given to St. Catherine Laboure. Father Joe Roesch, MIC, shares with us this special connection just outside the Basilica of Our Lady of Victory in Paris.
