The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast.
The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace (Basilique Notre-Dame de la Paix) is a Catholic basilica in Yamoussoukro, Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast).
The designs of the dome and encircled plaza are clearly inspired by the Basilica of Saint Peter in Vatican City.
Yamoussoukro, the Great African Basilica
It greatly resembles St. Peter's in the Vatican, but it is found in Africa -- the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in Yamoussoukro, Côte d'Ivoire. A basilica dedicated, as its name suggests, to Our Lady of Peace, and its central nave holds up to 7,000 people seated and 11,000 standing. Its foundation stone was blessed in 1985, and the basilica was consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1990. In this country, Catholics are in the minority, only 300,000 faithful in a population of 10 million inhabitants. However, the construction of the Basilica was encouraged by the then President Félix Houphouët-Boigny. In Yamoussoukro, Catholics represent 13% of the total population. The basilica resembles the beauty of the Vatican, yet it is not a replica. Some call it Saint Peter's because its builders were much inspired by it. But there are differences, such as the large cross placed on its dome, as well as the dome itself which the Pope wished slightly lower than that of St. Peter's. Our Lady of Peace of Yamoussoukro is not a cathedral but a minor basilica, managed by the Pallottine Fathers. The cathedral itself is located nearby, and is dedicated to St. Augustine. The author of this great African church is a Lebanese architect Pierre Fakhory. Marble was imported from Italy and Spain, while the windows are from France. The gardens which host the pilgrims are symmetrical, modeled after the gardens of Versailles in France. There are two golden statues of the Virgin. The largest stained-glass window in the world is found in the basilica. It was manufactured in Nanterre, France, and covers 7,363 square meters. This basilica is a place of pilgrimage, ever greeting the faithful from around the world. It has been the setting for important meetings, including the World Day of the Sick. On the day when this shrine is dedicated to Our Lady of Peace, we recall that the first missionaries who came to this land consecrated the Church to the Virgin Mary. Our Lady of Peace, again we entrust the Church of this diocese, of all dioceses in the country, to you. Through you, we are consecrated to your Son.O Mary, guide us to your Son, He that is the Way, the Truth and the Life!

In 1983, Ivorian President Félix Houphouët-Boigny moved the country’s capital city from Abidjan to Yamoussoukro, his birthplace. Huge building sites were set up to transform what was a small village into a modern city: an international airport was built, a polytechnic institute, a presidential palace and even the world's largest church. But most institutions were never transferred to Yamoussoukro and few people ever moved there. FRANCE 24 takes a closer look at Ivory Coast's abandoned capital.

This Is The Largest Church In The World | Basilique Notre- Dame de la paix
The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace (French: Basilique Notre-Dame de la Paix) is a Catholic minor basilica dedicated to Our Lady of Peace in Yamoussoukro, the administrative capital of Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast). The basilica was constructed between 1985 and 1989 with different cost estimates given by various groups. Some stated that it cost US$175 million,US$300 million,or US$400 million, ranging as high as US$600 million.
The basilica is not to be confused with a cathedral. Our Lady of Peace is located in the Diocese of Yamoussoukro; the Cathedral of Saint Augustine — less than three km away— is smaller in size than the basilica but the principal place of worship and seat of the bishop of the diocese.
Guinness World Records lists it as the largest church in the world, having surpassed the previous record holder, St. Peter's Basilica, upon completion. It has an area of 30,000 square metres (320,000 sq ft) and is 158 metres (518 ft) high. However, it also includes a rectory and a villa (counted in the overall area), which are not strictly part of the church. It can accommodate 18,000 worshippers, compared to 60,000 for St. Peter's. Ordinary services conducted at the basilica are usually attended by only a few hundred people.

Ivory Coast is home to one of the world's largest cathedrals
The Basilica of Peace in Ivory Coast is one of the world's largest cathedrals, but it has a problem with attendance.

Weird Yamoussoukro Basilica
When I looked for some pictures of Yamoussoukro, I always see this huge Vatican Pt.Peter’s Basilica sized church. Went to take a look when I was in Ya’kro.
The basilica was weird to me. From its location, its vibes and the way you visit it.
It’s located in the suburb of Ya’kro, the area is quiet, empty and green, huge contrast to its neighbourhood, where you see huge population in poverty (was taking a walk around before visiting the church).
As foreign visitor, entrance fee and registration was needed, understandable considering it must need a lot of maintainance. Also you can only visit the church with a guide, which I didn’t like much. The guide was a nice guy and seemed friendly, even speak some Chinese words. Yet the info he told was mostly about how huge the basilica is, how many marbles are used, things like that. Which, to be honest, wasn’t that interesting. But there isn’t really that many other stuff to tell about it I guess.
The architecture itself is nice, everything is nicely built, beautiful stained glass windows etc. Biggest dom in the world. Cool.
I actually wonder how many people really go there for the worship or anything though, it was made with intention to become something big like the Mecca for christians in West Africa, but nowadays pretty much a tourist site only.
Anyway, it was interesting to take a look.
