1940s Day at Cincinnati Union Terminal 2019
Join me as we travel back in time to the 1940's at Cincinnati's art deco gem, the Union Terminal. This is a wonderful annual event and it could not have been held at a more fitting venue. Everywhere I looked people were wearing vintage fashions and hair dos next to curvaceous classic vehicles from the 1920s, 30s and 40s.

Keeping warm in the coldest weather in over a decade
CINCINNATI (Rich Jaffe) -- As the Tri-State deals with the coldest weather in years it might seem impossible to stay warm. People have probably heard many times the answer to that is dressing in layers. On the blustery streets of Cincinnati it seems most women rely on fur trimmed coat hoods. The majority of men like wool watch caps.Alassane Thiam said it gets cold in West Africa too, Oh yeah. They wear hats, they wear coats like here you know.Another warm weather person was Vanessa Coonrod who was in town on business from Corpus Christi, Texas. She explained, I actually put pantyhose on under my jeans. I've got the boots and some socks. It actually doesn't feel as bad as I thought it would. Just wait till tomorrow; I may not come outside tomorrow. One of the best ways to beat the cold is to cover the head and where better to seek advice than Batsakes Hat Shop! There owner Gus Miller suggested hats and caps that have built in ear flaps. Modeling one of the caps with flaps well over his ears he said, Let em snow, let em do anything. My ears warm, my voice going, I feel great. When it comes to layers theres an unusual lesson from bicycle delivery guy Aaron McElwain. When asked what kind of layers he said, Umm...Kroger bags Insulating and dry. That's the key, try to stay dry.But to battle serious cold its about surplus. Like what was found at Northside Surplus. The warmest thing there? Without hesitation owner Todd Hague went straight to the coat rack.I would have to say Generation 3 level 7 cold weather parka, top part of the michelin man suit. You can even get the bottoms too.Lots of middle layers as well for a persons neck and head; wool or fleece scarves, balaclavas, and the ultimate for your hands.Todd said, If you don't want to be cold at all we've got these arctic mittens. Even got the back fur for wiping your nose.Batsake's Hat Shop has been in downtown Cincinnati for over 100 years. They can be found on West Sixth Street. Northside Surplus is in Northside on Spring Grove Avenue. CLICK HERE for link. 2014 Holiday season kicks off downtown
CINCINNATI (Angenette Levy) -- The holiday season kicked off on Fountain Square Friday night with the lighting of the Christmas tree.
The ice rink was full of people skating. Some spent the day shopping downtown and in Over-the-Rhine. Debra Perlmutter brought her family.
We live in Mason so coming down here is a lot different from up in the suburbs where we are so being downtown and all the environment with all of the holiday stuff going on and lots of people just having a great time, Perlmutter said.
At Batsakes Hat Shop, business has picked up over the last few weeks and it doesn't seem to be slowing.
It started with some people shopping from out of town. They come in early, Indianapolis, Louisville but today's been very busy, said owner Gus Miller.
Some small-business owners hope people will come downtown for Small Business Saturday to check out everything they have to offer.
The Christkindlmarkt will be open all weekend on Fountain Square.

Before & After: Historic Terrace Plaza Hotel has has suffered disinvestment
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - It’s on the list of national historic places. It’s also on a list for multiple code violations. The old Terrace Plaza Hotel downtown is in such bad shape that there’s damage to the shops below.
The 20 story building at the corner of Vine and Race on 6th street is empty, except for Batsakes Hat Shop and Wendel’s Men Store. Both places have been dealing with water damage from a burst pipe.
In video obtained from an employee of Batsakes, you can see a mess. The damage happened last week. Soggy ceiling tiles dropped to the floor and quality handmade hats were damaged.
“The pipe busted on the 2nd floor, there’s no heat in the building. The landlord collected the money but no heat, said 85-year-old Gus Miller, who is the owner and proprietor. His uncles opened the shop in 1907 and he took over 67 years ago.
Today he’s frustrated with his current landlords – JNY Capital bought it in August 2018 and didn’t answer our call for comment.
The City of Cincinnati seems frustrated too. Dozens of code violations and notices are taped to the door and crumped on the ground.
“This building has suffered disinvestment, that can be turned around. We are confident it will be.” Paul Muller is the executive director of the Cincinnati preservation Association, he says the hotel tells the story of Cincinnati’s innovation. “When it came on the scene in 1948 it was an explosion of excitement about the future. It took the country by storm. The governor came and he said I’d like to thank you for showing me what the future looks like and it’s magnificent.”
Many consider the hotel an icon of American modernism. Gus miller isn’t debating that – he’d just like the modern necessities of heat and water.
“Are you angry at the folks who own this building? How can you be angry with dumb people. They don’t listen to you. Waste your breath and words.” Miller, who lost 175 hats worth thousands of dollars in the flood, says he's looking to relocate his world famous shop to another spot downtown.
Both the hat shop and men's store are running electric heaters and the waters been shut off. Workers have to go somewhere else to even use the bathroom.
There's a meeting about the future of the hotel on February 7th. The public hearing happens in front of the historic conservation board.
These original pictures compared to what it looks like now, show the potential. They were taken a few years ago by Cincinnati photographer Phil Armstrong.

Cincinnati Natural History & Science Museum Renovated
Join me on a visit to one of my favorite natural history museums. The museum is located within the historic Union Terminal. Only part of the museum is currently open. After four years of extensive renovation with more to come, we are treated to a glimpse of what this museum will become once the restoration is complete. It is shaping up to be one of the best in the country. We visit the improved dinosaur gallery, a Neil Armstrong exhibit and best of all the cave!
Not to be missed is the Union Terminal building itself. The museum complex is open but the renovation will continue. The biggest goal of the project is to preserve the building and the cultural institutions it houses for the next 100 years. See my other Natural History Museum video:

Join me as I return to Jungle Jim's in Eastgate, Ohio. This time, however, I bring my friends and fellow YouTubers Chris About T-Shirts and Mindy. We explore this gourmet, eclectic store which is part theme park and part grocery store. We delve into the British tea section and feast our eyes on one of the largest selections of hot sauces I've ever seen. Hollywood and Disney Go to War
Today, we venture to the US Air force museum in Dayton, Ohio to explore two unique collections which you may be surprised are tucked away within this vast collection.
The 'Celebrities in Uniform' exhibit sheds light on the war time contributions and sacrifices willingly made by some of Hollywood's most famous actors. From Jackie Coogan and Clark Gable to Jimmy Stewart and President Ronald Reagan, their stories are powerfully told through photographs, uniforms and personal memorabilia.
From film and radio to cartoons and animation, the world of Walt Disney Productions also found a uniquely appropriate way to contribute to the war effort. In addition to training films, Disney directed his artists to share his famed characters free of charge to the creation of morale boosting insignias.
The insignia meant a lot to the men who were fighting... I had to do it... I owed it to them. Walt Disney To help fund my adventures:

Ultimate Selfie Machine - As We Are by Matthew Mohr
Join me and experience an adventure unlike any we've gone on before. Today we become part of a unique public art experience known as the ultimate selfie machine!
Located in the Columbus Ohio Convention Center, this interactive installation is the first of its kind. Created by artist, Matthew Mohr, the sculpture is a fourteen-foot human head constructed of LED screens. Hidden within the head is a futuristic photo booth filled with cameras capturing 3 dimensional images to construct the ultimate selfie which is then projected onto the giant head displaying faces 17 times larger than life.
Participants are asked to remove hats and eyeglasses, which confuse the facial recognition software. Faces must be stretched or compressed to fit the generic head form, which may be why many are taken aback by their projected giant portraits. During the day the head faces into the atrium interior. At night the ever metamorphosing sculpture rotates to face the street, broadcasting to passers-by.

Ripley's Odditorium Gatlinburg Tennesse
Join me as we visit a museum billed as the weirdest place in Gatlinburg, Ripley's Odditorium. The brainchild of Robert Ripley, the Ripley franchise celebrates the unusual and exotic. Ripley, himself began as a sports illustrator and amateur anthropologist. He collected unusual objects and illustrated the bizarre, later exhibiting them first at the Chicago World fair and then on Broadway. The first permanent Odditorium actually opened in Saint Augustine Florida in 1950, a year after Ripley passed away. The Gatlinburg Ripley's reopened in 2018 after a complete renovation and is now mountain themed.
