Time Elapse Photography: Battery Torbert at Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island
This video features historical photographs from the 1890s until 2011 showing the progress made during the construction of Battery Alfred Torbert, which is located inside Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island in New Castle County, Delaware off the coast of Delaware City. Ft. Delaware and Pea Patch Island are located on the Delaware River between Philadelphia and Cape May, New Jersey. The gun battery was designed by the Army Corps of Engineers and built by contractors and supervised by the Army engineers. The Battery original was planned to be a Gun-lift Battery but those plans were scraped for the new disappearing carriages. Over 6,000 piles were driven into the ground to act as a foundation for the Endicott era gun battery and was done so circa 1896. In 1897, construction was halted until it was determined as to which gun carriage model they would use in the batter (lift carriage vs. disappearing carriage). While that was going on, the army used the funds to build Fort Mott in New Jersey. Construction began in earnest in 1898 and was complete by late 1900.
The battery was named after Maj. Gen. (Major General) T. Alfred Torbert, a native Delawarean and Civil War veteran. The gun battery is the ONLY three-story Endicott Era battery in the United States. Endicott was the secretary of war when it was determined to update American Coastal Defenses. Since Endicott Era Batteries only really exist in the United States, it is pretty safe to say that Battery Torbert is the only three-story Endicott section on Earth. Most of the Endicott Era (and Taft Era) batteries are only two stories in height.
The guns in the rifle battery were removed during WW2 and sent to Puerto Rico for defense. The gun carriages were all scrapped for the war effort. On either side of Battery Torbert are two small rapid-fire batteries that supported each two 3-inch guns on masking parapet mounts. These guns had a shorter range but were used to defend against smaller vessels and mine sweepers.
World War II in Color: 16mm footage of 261st Coast Artillery at Fort DuPont in Delaware City
This video is 16mm film footage in color taken at Fort DuPont and surrounding area in 1941 by a member of the 261st Coast Artillery Battalion, Delaware Army National Guard. This digital copy of the original 16mm film was given to me by a descendant of the soldier, who served in the 261st during World War Two. It features the building of the cantonment barracks, which later served as housing for German POWs in 1944 and 1945. The footage also shows a baseball game at an unknown location and marching on the parade grounds at Fort DuPont. The area where soldiers are conducting war exercises is likely the dredge spoil area near the Finnegan farm, which is located across Port Penn Road, southwest from the main gate at Fort DuPont.
New York City's Battery Park at Night
New York City's Battery Park is great during the day, but at night it is poorly light.
Battery Park is a 25-acre (10 hectare) public park located at the Battery, the southern tip of Manhattan Island in New York City, facing New York Harbor. The Battery is named for artillery batteries that were positioned there in the city's early years in order to protect the settlement behind them. At the north end of the park is Castle Clinton, the often re-purposed last remnant of the defensive works that inspired the name of the park; Pier A, formerly a fireboat station; and Hope Garden, a memorial to AIDS victims. At the other end is Battery Gardens restaurant, next to the United States Coast Guard Battery Building. Along the waterfront, ferries depart for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and there is also a New York Water Taxi stop. The park is also the site of the East Coast Memorial which commemorates U.S. servicemen who died in coastal waters of the western Atlantic Ocean during World War II, and several other memorials. Actual real time of the video as I was driving is 9 hours, 40 minutes, 24 seconds. Original video was recorded in Full HD With a GoPro Session 5 @29.97 frames per second. I had the GoPro connected to an external battery pack so the battery will not die after 1 hour and 30 min as it does normally in that small camera. During the time-lapse creation process I took 1 frame out of each second of the entire video. That's 31970 frames! The software dumped images like this, frame 1, frame 31, frame 61, frame 91 and so on for the entire video. Then I combined each frame into a 60 frames per second 1080p video and this is the result. So each second in this video is approximately 2 minutes of actual driving. It took a very long time to create the entire time-lapse.
Since I converted pictures to video, I added music from copyright free YouTube music library that was at least 5 minutes long. I could not find an exact time matching video length that wasn't complete crap so this is the best I could find. Maybe in the future I will find a better tune. My favorite part of this video is at sunset when the sky look like it's burning.
