North Bridge and Minuteman Statue at Concord Battlefield, Concord, MA
Site of the Shot Heard 'Round the World and the Minuteman Statue sculpted by Daniel Chester french. The base is inscribed with the lines of Emerson's poem, from which this incident draws its name. Mom attempted to read the inscription but it may not be audible.
French was inspired to create the statue by the story of Capt. Isaac Davis, a Minuteman from Acton who became the first American officer killed in the Revolutionary War. Davis was a farmer and gunsmith, a thirty-year-old father of four. This battle came at a particularly bad time for Capt.and Mrs. Davis, as all four of their kids had come down with canker rash, what is now called Scarlet Fever. Hannah Davis had an eerie premonition that she would never see her husband again and she was right. Davis' group of Minutemen were placed in the vanguard at Concord and saw the worst fighting because they were equipped with bayonets, unlike the other units.
Also, a chance encounter with a Redcoat Major who shared some information with me. He is a Major of the Royal Engineers (not like John Pitcairn, who was a Major of the Royal Marines). A major in those days was still required to carry his own musket, so he wore only one epaulette on the right shoulder and carried his gun on the left. The epaulette is made with gold thread so easily ruined by the weight and constant rubbing of a gun. The gold medallion at his throat is a gorget (gor-zhay) worn as a badge of rank by officers on both sides.
Some of the interview was inaudible so I have summed it up here, although the process of loading a musket and attaching the bayonet can be discerned from the video. He carries a fusil, which is a scaled down version of a Brown Bess (9 lbs v. 14 lbs). However, a fusil still carries a wicked-looking bayonet that means business!
Major John Pitcairn did not die at Concord, but did die two months later at Bunker Hill, falling into the arms of his distraught son. Major Pitcairn lost a pair of Scottish-design ball-trigger pistols at Concord, which came into the possession of Israel Putnam, later a Continental General. Putnam carried the pistols throughout the war.

Beautiful Place #97 Minute Man Historical National Park Lexington Mass

This is only one segment of the Minuteman National Historical Park. I will be going back at some point to film other segments but I had some battery issues so I could only get really one segment plus I was running out of daylight. This place makes my most beautiful places list because of its natural beauty and it's historical significance. The birthplace of our country's independence was founded on these sacred grounds. I am not here to give a history lesson but if you like history you cannot not visit this place probably the most historical place in our country based solely on the fact that it's where our country gained its independence.
Follow me as I travel north America in my vintage camper van hunting down beautiful and historic places. Buckle up for the ultimate road trip adventure hosted by yours truly.
