Battleship Texas State Historic Site (in La Porte, TX)
The Texas was in service from 1914 to 1948 and became a museum ship soon thereafter. It is one of the few US Navy ships that served in both World Wars. The ship is convenient to Houston and visiting provides a good perspective of how battleships operated and crew life.

San Jacinto Monument and battleship Texas. Houston Texas.
The San Jacinto Monument is a 567.31-foot-high (172.92-meter) column located on the Houston Ship Channel in unincorporated Harris County, Texas, United States, near the city of Houston. The monument is topped with a 220-ton star that commemorates the site of the Battle of San Jacinto, the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution. The monument, constructed between 1936 and 1939 and dedicated on April 21, 1939, is the world's tallest masonry column and is part of the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site. By comparison, the Washington Monument is 554.612 feet (169.046 m) tall, but remains the tallest stone monument in the world. The column is an octagonal shaft topped with a 34-foot (10 m) Lone Star – the symbol of Texas. Visitors can take an elevator to the monument's observation deck for a view of Houston and the Battleship Texas (see USS Texas).

Here's some unedited aerial video footage of the Battleship Texas and the San Jacinto Monument shot with the Team Blacksheep Discovery Pro Quadcopter. (These are not drones despite the misconception) My camera gimbal apparently needs to be re-calibrated as some of the video is not level.. You still get the view.. ;)

San Jacinto Monument, Battleship Texas, and Downtown Houston Drive Through
Houston is the fourth largest city (in terms of population) in the United States, and there is plenty to explore. There is so much to see that I will need to make many trips in the future to see everything. On this trip, I head down to the San Jacinto Monument and to Battleship Texas. I check out both although it was hard to see the top of the monument due to the low clouds and fog. The monument is a dedication to the Battle of San Jacinto back on April 21, 1836 which the outnumbered Texian Army led by General Sam Houston defeated the Mexican army and forced then-Mexican president Santa Anna to sign an independence treaty which led to the creation of the Republic of Texas. However, Texas would be later admitted to the United States in 1845. After visiting both places, I take a drive through downtown Houston.
If you would like to watch a specific part of the video, you may use these shortcuts:

San Jacinto Monument and the Battleship Texas
In this episode I take you to the famous San Jacinto Monument in Houston, Texas. In this place on April 21, 1836, a great battle was fought between the volunteer army of Texas led by General Sam Houston against the Army of Mexico led by the dictator General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna.
Vastly outnumbered, the Texans were able to defeat the Army of Mexico in a mere 18 minutes because of the brilliant tactical leadership of General Houston.
General Santa Anna was captured the next day dressed up in a common soldier's uniform and he was forced to sign over the territory of Texas to General Houston, thus was born the new Republic of Texas! Don't mess with Texas!

Battleship Texas, part 1
Weekend visit to the USS Texas (BB-35) at San Jacinto State Park, 20-30 minutes east of Houston. (From Wikipedia) She is notable for being the oldest remaining dreadnought battleship (I like that name:); for being one of only six remaining ships to have served both World Wars; the first US battleship to launch an aircraft; the first US battleship to mount anti-aircraft guns; the first US battleship to become a permanent museum ship; the first battleship declared to be a US National Historic Landmark.
Hard Hat tours are offered. The last one for 2009 is Nov 21, according to a note one of the tour guides gave me. This gentleman, who was with the air force, was very knowledgeable and seems to enjoy what he was doing and even invited me to join and become a tour guide. He mentioned something about the ships degaussing system and electricals, and I wish I could have taken the hard hat tour and learned some more.
If you do visit the surrounding park, remember to protect yourself from mosquitoes (LOTS of them, at least when I visited in October). And if you drive from Houston to San Jacinto with the windows down, be prepared for some pungent odor.

My tribute to the San Jacinto Monument and battleship Texas please share
((((((((((For the record you have to take your FAA certificate and go to the Texas parks and wildlife department building and apply filling out paperwork to even fly there and most get told no..... And for the people that don’t know the laws on altitude your altitude is 400 feet unless you are within three or 400 feet of a structure you can go higher look up the FAA rules before you comment.....))))))))
