Lost Photos From Baxter Springs Tornado Now At Museum
Baxter Springs, KS--
People still looking for lost photos from the Baxter Springs tornado in 2014 can now find them closer to home.
Recently, the Baxter Springs Heritage Museum was given the remainder of the lost photos found by the National Disaster Photo Rescue team from Carthage. There are 700 photos from the tornado that are left unclaimed.
All of them have been cleaned and cataloged and are made available online for people to search through.
Baxter Springs Historical Society President Jim Halls said it's an honor to hold on to these lost photos until they find their home.
We had people who lost basically everything. The disaster wasn't near as big as the one in Joplin was. But it still means a lot to these people to get their life long memories back, the photos back, Hall said.
Hall said nearly 7,000 photos were lost after the April 2014 tornado.

Exploring Southeast Kansas
While Kansas has a rich history, most Kansans do not connect the history of the state to the mining industry, conflicts between labor and management, or even the Civil War. But if you visit the southeastern corner of the state, and you know where to look, these complex histories await.
This documentary features stories from passionate museum volunteers who fear the loss of the past. In other places, stories are harder to unearth as they involve causes now unpopular or environmental legacies that have consumed entire communities.
The film provides a glimpse at some of the stories of southeastern Kansas as seen through the eyes of a group of JCCC faculty and staff who visited the area in 2015. The trip was cosponsored by the Kansas Studies Institute and the Center for Sustainability at JCCC. Trip leaders Dr. Jim Leiker and Dr. Jay Antle have been conducting these tours since 2011.

Arkansas ( AR-kən-saw) is a state in the southern region of the United States, home to over 3 million people as of 2017. Its name is of Siouan derivation from the language of the Osage denoting their related kin, the Quapaw Indians. The state's diverse geography ranges from the mountainous regions of the Ozark and the Ouachita Mountains, which make up the U.S. Interior Highlands, to the densely forested land in the south known as the Arkansas Timberlands, to the eastern lowlands along the Mississippi River and the Arkansas Delta.
Arkansas is the 29th largest by area and the 33rd most populous of the 50 United States. The capital and most populous city is Little Rock, located in the central portion of the state, a hub for transportation, business, culture, and government. The northwestern corner of the state, such as the Fayetteville–Springdale–Rogers Metropolitan Area and Fort Smith metropolitan area, is a population, education, and economic center. The largest city in the state's eastern part is Jonesboro. The largest city in the state's southeastern part is Pine Bluff.
The Territory of Arkansas was admitted to the Union as the 25th state on June 15, 1836. In 1861, Arkansas withdrew from the United States and joined the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. On returning to the Union in 1868, the state continued to suffer due to its earlier reliance on slavery and the plantation economy, causing the state to fall behind economically and socially. White rural interests continued to dominate the state's politics until the civil rights movement. Arkansas began to diversify its economy following World War II and relies on its service industry, aircraft, poultry, steel, tourism, cotton, and rice.
The culture of Arkansas is observable in museums, theaters, novels, television shows, restaurants, and athletic venues across the state. Arkansas's enduring image has earned the state a special place in the American consciousness. People such as politician and educational advocate William Fulbright; former President Bill Clinton who served as the 40th and 42nd Governor of Arkansas; his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton; former NATO Supreme Allied Commander General Wesley Clark, Walmart magnate Sam Walton; singer-songwriters Johnny Cash, Charlie Rich, and Glen Campbell; the poet C. D. Wright; and physicist William L. McMillan, who was a pioneer in superconductor research; have all lived in Arkansas.

The state's annexation set off a chain of events that led to the Mexican–American War in 1846. A slave state before the American Civil War, Texas declared its secession from the U.S. in early 1861, and officially joined the Confederate States of America on March 2 of the same year. After the Civil War and the restoration of its representation in the federal government, Texas entered a long period of economic stagnation.
Historically four major industries shaped the Texas economy prior to World War II: cattle and bison, cotton, timber, and oil. Before and after the U.S. Civil War the cattle industry, which Texas came to dominate, was a major economic driver for the state, thus creating the traditional image of the Texas cowboy. In the later 19th century cotton and lumber grew to be major industries as the cattle industry became less lucrative. It was ultimately, though, the discovery of major petroleum deposits (Spindletop in particular) that initiated an economic boom which became the driving force behind the economy for much of the 20th century.
