Sun, sand, surf and a former South African cricketing star. That's not all next weekend's Covelong Point Open Surf Contest has to offer at the first national-level surfing competition in the state to be held in Kovalam, about 40km south of Chennai.
From September 27 to 29, 7am to 7pm, the sunny stretch at Kovalam on the East Coast Road, will perk up with marquees, band stands and spots in the sand offering everything from skateboard ramps and free surf lessons to yoga, live concerts and food. On the second day of the festival, supported by the Surfing Federation of India (SFI), avid surfer and former South Africa cricketer Jonty Rhodes will land up at the beach. The event is likely to attract 150 surfers from across the country.
Kovalam is emerging as one of the country's popular surfing destinations, says SFI president Kishore Kumar. Manapad, south of Tuticorin, and Gokarna, in Karnataka, are other popular spots. The first national competition was held in Kerala's Kovalam last year; its namesake in Tamil Nadu will host the second. Kumar talks of the importance of bolstering surfing competitions with cultural events as they not only attract people, but also help create a beach culture which India hasn't been able to develop.
Vast tracts of our beaches are empty, he says. However, the tourism boards of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu are just beginning to warm to the idea that surfing can help develop beach tourism, which is why they've started to support these competitions.
Tourism can make or break a place, and Murthy Nagavan, 32, the original surfer of Kovalam, is anticipative of the social and economic upgrade his village stands to gain from the upcoming event.
Having started Covelong Point, a 'social surfing' school there last November, he has used the school as a means of social advancement in the area. Some students who've come to my school have contributed money and material that I channel into the village. I've taught close to 200 people in eight months, says Murthy, who started body-boarding at the age of 10 on a free-floating wooden window.
Murthy has come a long way since. While his school is funded largely by angel investor Arun Vasu — a businessman who ventured around 10 lakh — Murthy himself plays a vital role in steering the school's resources towards community outreach. Covelong Point recently sponsored the education of 20 needy children from the village through a contribution of 50,000 to St. Joseph's Higher Secondary School. It has also supported the college education of five village youth with a contribution of 30,000.
Murthy, a former volunteer with the mental health non-profit, The Banyan, doesn't stop short at the barrel. He distributes donated clothes to the destitute; conducts beach clean-ups, plans to organise a free eye camp there next month; and best of all, gives youth of his village free surf lessons and surfboards on the condition that they swear off drinks and drugs, attend school regularly and pitch in at beach cleaning drives. ''Murthy noticed that the village's youth were gravitating towards drugs and alcohol, and wanted to bring them back to healthy recreation and possibly even a vocation by teaching them to surf,'' says Vasu. His efforts are paying off. A couple of young men are now serious about surfing; they participate in competitions around the country, and even hope to be surfing instructors who can make a living off the whitecaps. The Australian non-profit, Boards for Billions, which helps poor fishing communities find alternative means of livelihood, dispatched 25 surfboards to Kovalam, and more are on their way.

After exploring the capital city of Kerala Thiruvananthapuram or Varkala…its time to say bye to Kerala and welcome into Tamilnadu and my first exploring destination is Kanyakumari.
The Kovalam Beach is, in fact, the most famous beach in Kerala. Kovalam is extremely popular among westerners due to shallow waters and low tidal waves.
The road condition is super smooth….and the view alongside the road is beautiful.
Kanyakumari, also called Cape Comorin during the British rule of India, is a small coastal town in Tamilnadu, It's renowned for being the southernmost point of India where the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal all meet.
Priceless sunrises and sunsets, on Kanyakumari's liquid horizon, are among the finest in India. Sunsets are particularly special on full moon nights, when the moon rises from the sea opposite the setting sun at about the same time. Early in the morning sunrise point is packed with people to have a glance of sunrise.
However, the town also has special spiritual significance. It's regarded as the abode of virgin Goddess Kanya Kumari, an incarnation of Goddess Parvati. The remarkable spot where the oceans merge, known as Triveni Sangam, is considered to be powerful and sacred. A dip in the water will wash away all sins and provide liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
The Swami Vivekananda memorial was built on the rock in 1970 to honor Swami Vivekananda. It consists of bronze statue of the Swami Vivekananda, a hall with information about his life, and a meditation area….the view from here is exceptional.
A towering statue of the great Tamil poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar stands on a smaller neighboring rock, just off the coast of Kanyakumari. The foundation stone was laid in 1979 and the work was completed 20 years later, in 1999.

The view of Swami Vivekananda memorial & Thiruvalluvar from the Kanykumari beach is fabulous. Blessings of Goddess Kanya Kumari and A dip in the water of Triveni Sangam makes the trip refreshing.

Clear surf & powerful swell has led to Kovalam, India’s first surfing village, becoming one of India’s top surfing destinations.
Hosted by the Covelong Point Social Surf School in association with the Surfing Federation of India, the Covelong Point Surf Competition is an international level surf competition that takes place annually in Kovalam.
