Locally Brewed Missoula Beer

Missoula (pronounced /mɨˈzuːlə/) is a city in and the county seat of Missoula County, Montana, United States. As of the Census Bureau's 2006 estimate, the population of Missoula is 64,081.[1] [2] The 2008 Census Bureau estimate puts the city's metropolitan area population at 107,320 as of July 1, 2008 [3], making it the second-largest city and metropolitan area in Montana (just behind Billings).

Join historian Brian Shovers for Seventy-five and Counting: The Origins and Evolution of the Montana Micro-Brewery Industry. In 1981 the United States claimed only 82 breweries; in 2017 that number exceeded 5,300. In 1968 Great Falls Select, Montana’s only brewery, called it quits. This would all change in 1984 when Kessler Micro-brewery opened in Helena’s Sixth Ward, followed by Bayern Brewery in Missoula, operated by a trained German brew master named Jurgen Knoller. This talk is based on fourteen oral history interviews conducted last year with some of the pioneers of the industry, an industry which now claims over 1,400 employees, in towns from Wibaux to Libby. These interviews were gathered for the Montana Historical Society’s Montana Brewery Oral History Project, which was funded in part by Humanities Montana. This talk is sponsored by the Friends of the Montana Historical Society.
