Bear Creek Lake State Park, VA 2-13-17
Bear Creek Lake State Park is a 326 acre park located within the larger 16,000 acre Cumberland State Forest in Cumberland County, Virginia. This central Virginia impoundment is 30 acres in size. On this day I had a little time to kill so I decided to have lunch by the lake. Afterwards I hiked a little on the Catfish Trail. Wasnt planning on using any music but it was actually too windy for me to stand. Lol! And that's saying something as I regularly frequent Dolly Sods in West Virginia, which has to be one of the most windy places in the eastern United States. Thanks for watching!

Swallow Falls State Park | Winter at Deep Creek Lake
It's worth braving the elements when the views are this good!! Hiking or exploring parks may not seem like an obvious choice for winter activities, but the Deep Creek Lake area has so many spectacular state parks that only get better in the winter! Swallow Falls State Park is one of the most popular destinations in Garrett County and is home to Maryland's tallest free-falling waterfall, Muddy Creek Falls. We recently had a very cold bout of weather and the falls started to freeze! In years past, the falls have even been known to freeze solid. It's truly a winter wonderland!!

Swallow Falls State Park is a 257 acre park located along the Youghiogheny River, in Garrett County, Maryland. This small park is surrounded by the much larger Garrett State Forest, which is 8,042 acres in size. Attractions at Swallow Falls State Park include: Tolliver Falls, Swallow Falls on the Youghiogheny River and Muddy Creek Falls. With a drop of 53 feet, Muddy Creek Falls is the tallest waterfall in the state of Maryland. Also, within this park is a 37 acre stand of virgin Hemlock and White Pine called Youghiogheny Groveand is said to be the last stand of its kind in Maryland. From the parking lot it's an easy walk to see all of these places. The stairs down to Muddy Creek Falls are pretty steep but not too bad as far as climbing goes. According to my girlfriends Fitbit we walked a total of 1.5 miles and we rate this hike 1.5 out of 5 Billygoats. Thanks for watching!

Beartown State Park slide show from Lloyd's Lens Photography
Beartown State Park is a special place in West Virginia. The land was donated by the family of a soldier that never came home from Vietnam. This was his special place in the world. The boardwalk trail through the rocks winds it's way through interesting landscapes for about a mile.
Bear Rock in Jefferson National Forest, Scott County, Virginia
This is a very short video and slideshow of Bear Rock, a large rock outcrop that overlooks the gorge created by the Little Stony Creek as it flows off the mountain at High Knob on its way down to the Clinch River. Bear Rock is located about 1/4 mile down an unmarked trail off of a forest service road in the Clinch Ranger District of the Jefferson National Forest, just a few miles south of the town of Coeburn, Virginia. Unfortunately, the entire Bear Rock area is seriously littered with a lot of trash and graffiti...please watch my other video Leave No Trace which was filmed at this location. It is such a shame that the area is so littered and disrespected in this way, because it is otherwise a very unique and beautiful place. I was fortunate to find this place. Thanks for watching!

America's Wildest Places - Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge, Alabama
The Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge is located on both banks of the Chattahoochee River in south-east Alabama and south-west Georgia. Named after the city of Eufaula, the refuge offers a variety of wetland and upland habitats for diverse fauna. A prominent feature of the abundant wetlands is Lake Eufaula (Walter F. George Reservoir) and several feeder streams.
The Eufaula NWR is home to a large variety of birds, mammals, reptiles and insects. Habitats range from lake to shallow shores, from creeks to wetlands, from open fields to shaded woodlands. In addition to the many species which call the refuge home year round, many more use the refuge as a migratory destination or stop over during the fall, winter and spring.
The refuge's primary purpose is to provide habitat for wintering waterfowl, other migratory birds and resident species; to provide habitat and protection for endangered or threatened species; and to provide wildlife oriented recreational opportunities for the public.
Waterfowl can be seen most easily November through February. Visitors are directed to the Upland Waterfowl Viewing Platform overlooking the Upland Impoundment. It is a covered, open-air pavilion, and the impoundment is a shallow water area managed specifically as a waterfowl resting and feeding area.
To see wading and water-birds, visitors are directed to one of four impoundments, three of which have active nesting colonies of several species.
In the spring, breeding herons and egrets can be seen on Bird Island visible from the Wildlife Drive. The island is off limits to visitors.
Migratory songbirds can best be seen on walks into wooded areas around the wildlife drive or other areas. Many other wildlife species such as alligators, hawks, and deer can be seen along the 7-mile wildlife drive.
TRAVEL & TOURISM
In general, the refuge is open to visitors during daylight hours, seven days a week. Brochures are available at the leaflet racks located at the entrance to the wildlife drive, at the headquarters, and at the entrance of the Kennedy and Bradley units. There is a 7-mile auto route, two viewing towers, and a walking trail.
The best time to observe most wildlife is the early morning or late afternoon hours. Some species can be observed during mid-day.
Refuge tours are provided for organized scout, school, and church groups or other organizations. Off-refuge programs are provided to civic groups, school classes, or any other organization when staff/volunteers are available.
Only licensed vehicles are permitted. Access is limited to gravel roads; some roads are closed seasonally. ATVs are prohibited. Horseback riding is permitted on gravel roads only. Riders are cautioned to watch for vehicles. Non-motorized bikes are permitted on gravel roads only. Hunters, fishermen and wildlife observers are encouraged to use bicycles to access remote areas.

Pine Mountain Trail: Exploring Birch Knob
On August 25, 1965 a five passenger Piper Comanche single engine plane left Danville, Kentucky en route to Grundy, Virginia. After letting off two other passengers at Lexington, Kentucky the pilot and two passengers remained for the rest of the journey. Pilot Jack Stockdale of Danville, Illinois, Dale Coleman of Perrysville, Indiana, and Paul Bennett, Church of Christ minister also from Danville, IL were left on the plane. The plane was last heard from 30 miles west Whitesburg, Ky.
After the plane had not reached it's destination Civil Air Patrol organized an air and ground search on August 26, 1965. Civil Air Patrol units from Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky where brought in for the search. Army helicopters, State Police Planes, and varied ground equipment were also used.
Flying at tree top level the plane wreckage could not be spotted. On September 3, 1965, eight days after the crash Freel and Jennings Vanover, brothers and young graduates of Clintwood High School were driving the road to see the recently constructed fire tower. They saw a sun ray gleaming off a piece of metal 50 feet below the road. When investigating they found the metal to be that of the plane wreckage that had slid under the foliage near a cave.
The Birch Knob Observation Tower was completed in December of 2003 by the United States Forest Service after four years of construction. The purpose of the project was to provide recreational viewing opportunities for the public. The observation deck is at an elevation 3,144 feet above sea level with 183 steps to reach the top. The view from this perspective can allow one to see Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee. On a clear day, it is also possible to see Ohio. From the parking lot, a trail down the mountain leads to Jenny Falls. The hike is approximately 2 miles.
Before this tourist attraction was revitalized, the only access to the Knob was through a small, narrow crack in the rock. An old 54 foot fire observation tower was located there that overlooked the Pine Mountain area. The fire tower was in operation from 1964 - 1978. The fire tower was dismantled in 1980. Although the fire tower has been torn down, the piers are still visible from where the tower once was situated. A new road now leads to the cliff 200 feet below Birch Knob. A steel stairway now ascends to the top. The newly constructed steel stairway is equipped with a handrail and the observation deck sits on a rock outcrop at the highest summit of Pine Mountain.
Birch Knob is located about 7.4 miles southwest of Elkhorn City, Kentucky. It is 6.2 miles north of Clintwood in the Jefferson National Forest on the border between Kentucky and Virginia.

2019 Cloudsplitter 100k
The Cloudsplitter 100 will take place on High Knob, deep in the heart of Central Appalachia, during the weekend of October . High Knob is located at the highest point in the Cumberland Mountains at an elevation of 4,223 feet above sea level. The 100 mile course, as well as the accompanying 100k, 50k and 25k distances, will wind along rugged, rocky and remote trails within Jefferson National Forest. Although parts of this region have been developed, strip mined or heavily logged, High Knob remains relatively untouched, and it is home to some of the greatest diversity of plant life in the Commonwealth of Virginia, making it a true ecological treasure. The unique trails on High Knob pass through dense forestland dotted with cliffs, water crossings, waterfalls, rock shelters, rhododendron thickets, caves and enormous sandstone boulders. This is one of the more physically demanding trails in the East, and it remains a significant unprotected wilderness area. On a clear day, four other states can be seen from the High Knob summit: West Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky and North Carolina.
Due to the difficulty of the 100 mile distance, the cutoff time will be 40 hours.
The race will begin and end in Norton, Virginia, at the Norton Farmer's Market.
