Loving The Marshlands In Utah
Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge is a 74,000-acre (299 km2) National Wildlife Refuge in Utah, established in 1928. The refuge is part of a national system of fee ownership lands purchased from willing sellers, mostly private property owners.
The refuge encompasses the Bear River and its delta where it flows into the northern part of the Great Salt Lake in eastern Box Elder County. It includes a variety of habitats, such as open water, mudflats, wetlands, and uplands. The refuge hosts millions of migratory birds each year including species such as bald eagle and tundra swan. There are more than 41,000 acres (170 km2) of freshwater wetlands. The Refuge is approx. 80,000 acres of Federal and State lands that are managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The surrounding lands are occupied by multiple hunting clubs along the bird migration route.
The James V. Hansen Wildlife Education Center features interactive exhibits about the birds and wetlands of the Refuge and a 1/2-mile accessible walking trail a wetland habitat outside. Environmental education programs, symposiums and public events are offered.
There is a one-way 12 mile auto route through the Refuge, with an audio tour and map available for download through the official website.

Miller Park Bird Refuge Restoration and Enhancement Project
The riparian restoration in the Miller Park Bird Refuge is an opportunity to bring a section of degraded riparian habitat back to a healthy ecosystem with natural function. This will include a predominance of native plant and wildlife species, and optimal conditions for improved public access to wildlife watching and passive recreation. Restoring the critical habitat zones and improving water quality will implement best management practices identified in the 2010 Riparian Corridor Study. The site has been a fixture in the local community functioning as an important pocket of green space within an otherwise urbanized city environment. The improvements will preserve park amenities and will provide the public with safe and enjoyable walking and wildlife viewing areas.

Bear River Bonneville Cutthroat Trout Reintroduction
After nearly eight years, a project started in 2008 by BLM-Utah, Utah-DWR and Trout Unlimited to continues to successfully increase native fish populations in northern Utah. In fact, the partnership’s proactive approach to native fish conservation has helped keep Bear River Bonneville Cutthroat trout from listing as a threatened or endangered species! Yesterday (Oct. 15, 2015), a team of fish experts reintroduced 5,600 young cutthroat into seven miles of Randolph Creek in beautiful Rich County. Yesterday's reintroduction would not have been possible without the support of private landowners in the area, and the 5,600 released are just the beginning of a larger-scale project that will reintroduce several native fish species to 40 miles of the stream system. Partnerships drive ongoing conservation efforts like this one and BLM-Utah looks forward to more team efforts in the years ahead. Good news for anglers from yesterday's reintroduction—the cutthroat are expected to be large enough to fish either late next summer or the following spring!
