The Smith Mine Disaster of 1943 – near Red Lodge, Montana MT
The Smith Mine Disaster of 1943 – near Red Lodge, Montana MT.
From the Billings, MT. Gazette, Feb 26, 2013:
Saturday paid time-and-a-half at the Montana Coal and Iron Co.’s Smith Mine between Bearcreek and Washoe.
Miners who had just emerged from the Great Depression of the 1930s eagerly worked the overtime weekend shift. They had the added incentive of doing their part to keep the World War II war machine running.
Although many were immigrants, they were a patriotic lot, according to Matt Stump, a senior in history at Montana State University Billings. Most had the cost of war bonds deducted from their wages, he said.
As 1942 drew to a close, Frank Mourich, a native of Austria, had increased his purchase of war bonds to $75 of his $132 biweekly paycheck, Stump found while researching his senior thesis.
Daylight was about an hour old when Mourich and 76 other coal miners entered the mouth of the Smith Mine on Feb. 27, 1943. On that bright winter morning, they descended about 7,000 feet into the No. 3 vein and went to work.
No one knows whether any of these men intent on their work noticed an unusual buildup of methane gas or coal dust, and there are only theories about what ignited an explosion so powerful that it blew a 20-ton locomotive off its tracks.
Management got its first notification of the disaster below from hoisting engineer Alex Hawthorne, 55, who telephoned the surface and said: “There’s something wrong down here. I’m getting out.”
All three survivors, who were described in the newspaper as “very sick,” were rushed to a hospital in Red Lodge, five miles away.
Also hospitalized early that day were eight volunteers who were searching for survivors.
Above ground, miners’ families kept a calm, hopeful watch, The Gazette reported.
Meanwhile, the Red Cross, already in a high state of preparedness because of the war, quickly established a canteen to feed the crowd gathering at the mine. Within an hour of the first call for help, the organization had set up a 50-bed emergency hospital in Red Lodge, with the assistance of local high school students.
On Sunday, Feb. 28, experienced miners told reporters that they believed that there was just a “thousand to one chance” trapped miners were still alive. The Butte specialists, who were equipped with oxygen masks, could stay underground as long as six hours at a time, but they were unfamiliar with the mine. Regular mine employees with only filter masks could not go as deep into the tunnel.
Desperate to save family members and friends, local miners stayed down as long as they could.
The rescue effort was grim.
“When exhausted rescuers come out of the mine, most of them are dazed and groggy from the effects of the gas for hours afterward, The Gazette reported. They are taken to the Red Lodge emergency hospital and put to bed. Drugs are administered to quiet their nerves, but many grow hysterical.”
Six bodies had been recovered by Sunday. But miners’ wives kept the faith.
“Calm and steadfast, unalterable in belief that their men will come out all right, they waited side by side on benches in the improvised canteen set up in the machine shop,” Gazette reporter Kathryn Wright wrote. “Many have been there since the disaster to meet the boys ‘when they come out.’ ”
Robert Wakenshaw’s wife, awaiting word of her husband and her father-in-law, held her head high and her shoulders erect as she told Wright: “I know they’re coming out. I have all the confidence in the world.”
Seventeen-year-old Martha Barovich knew her widowed father, Sam, would emerge safely.
In agonizing slowness over the next week, the number of bodies began to mount. The last — that of mine foreman Elmer Price, 53 — came out on March 7. He left a wife and five children.
The final casualty of the disaster, Matt Woodward, a rescue worker suffering the effects of his efforts, died April 9. His death brought the total to 75.

A Peaceful View During a Drive Through South Dakota's Black Hills
During a roadtrip/vacation to Yellowstone National Park, my family and I stopped by Mt. Rushmore to visit, and found ourselves trekking through at least a part of the Black Hills of South Dakota. Our venture led to this breathtakingly serene view, with Mt. Rushmore glimpsed in the distance. Frankly, this brief minute-and-a-quarter was my favorite moment of the trip up to that point by far—if nothing else, because I experienced this moment of peace on my own, away from my sometimes exasperating family members.
Motorcycles Use Extreme Caution!
Doc Pawsitive loves a good long motorcycle road trip, so the long haul from Pennsylvania to Glacier National Park to ride the Going to the Sun Highway seemed perfectly reasonable! A short hop down Scenic Highway 89 led to Yellowstone and a cruise up and over 11,000 foot Beartooth Pass on the Beartooth Scenic Highway, often rated the most scenic roadway in America and Doc Pawsitive has to agree!
America's Scenic Byways
In this video, I take a look at what America's National Scenic Byways are all about. And I check the list of roads to see which ones I have seen myself so far. Maybe I will try to take a drive on more of them in the future.

Driving from Hardin, Montana to Gillette, Wyoming on Interstate 90
Interstate 90 enters Wyoming from Montana and heads south concurrent with US 87 through hilly grasslands. It curves to the southeast and meets an interchange that serves the small community of Parkman. Continuing southeast, the highway intersects US 14 at a diamond interchange. US 14 joins I-90 and US 87 and the three routes curve east. After the freeway bends back to the southeast, it intersects the eastern end of WYO 345, then crosses the BNSF Railway[3] (formerly the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad) and the Tongue River. The highway serves as the western terminus of WYO 339 and then passes over WYO 338 without an intersection just before it crosses Goose Creek. Just south of Goose Creek, US 14 and US 87 split off to the south of I-90 via a trumpet interchange.
The freeway turns due south and skirts around the eastern edge of Sheridan. It intersects WYO 336, then crosses over the BNSF Railway again,[3] before intersecting US 14 farther south. South of Sheridan, I-90 continues to travel south roughly parallel to US 87. The highway intersects WYO 342 and Prairie Dog Creek Road at diamond interchanges before US 87 merges back into and becomes concurrent with I-90. The highway runs southwest of Lake Desmet. Here it meets Lake Ridge Road, which leads to the lake.[4]
Southeast of Lake Desmet, I-90/US 87 comes to a diamond interchange with Rock Creek Road. It then intersects the business loops of US 87 and I-25 at an incomplete diamond interchange; only traffic heading southbound can exit, and traffic from the business loops can only access I-90 northbound. Just southeast of this interchange, I-90 meets the northern terminus of I-25. US 87 follows I-25 southbound toward Buffalo, while I-90 bends to the southeast and intersects US 16 at a diamond interchange.[4]
Southeast of Buffalo, I-90 continues in a general southeasterly direction through hilly grasslands. The highway intersects several minor farm roads, then curves to the northeast toward Gillette. Just west of the city, the freeway turns due east. Within Gillette, I-90 comes to a diamond interchange with WYO 50 and its own business loop, then dips to the southeast and meets another diamond interchange, this one with WYO 59. I-90 then has one last exit in Gillette: a partial cloverleaf interchange with US 14, US 16, and WYO 51. The first two of those routes become concurrent with I-90 and follow it east.[4]
The freeway crosses the BNSF Railway[3] and then turns to the east. It meets a diamond interchange with Garner Lake Road, then leaves Gillette and intersects American Road before crossing the BNSF Railway again.[3] The highway travels east, parallel to WYO 51 and then meets Adon Road, then curves to the southeast toward Moorcroft. I-90 has two exits in Moorcroft; at the first exit, US 14 and US 16 leave I-90, and I-90's business loop begins. The highway passes over US 14 with no access and then meets its second exit in the city: the eastern terminus of its business loop. East of this exit, I-90 leaves the city.
