Castle-mansion, once the retreat of German Empress Victoria Friedrich, set on an estate in the Taunus hills 30 minutes northwest of Frankfurt. Towering trees shade immaculate gardens and an 18-hole golf course (open April-October). Restored interior is graced with items from the empress’s collection of antiques and art treasures; medieval-revival salons and a grand Great Hall are embellished by carved moldings, immense gilt-framed oil paintings, Flemish tapestries, fireplaces and marble floors. Designed by Nina Campbell, the 62 individually furnished rooms, including elegant first-floor suites, offer high ceilings, large windows and fine antiques; adequate but old-fashioned baths. Formal dining room retains much of the original sumptuous décor. Spa treatments in separate Beauty Cottage.
