WRTW: A Madwomen's Cabaret Promotional Clip
A collection of moments from Who Run The World: A Madwomen's Cabaret as performed by Julie Lyn Barber and Darrin Murrell at the 2015 IndyFringe Festival in Indianapolis.
“WHO RUN THE WORLD: A Madwomen’s Cabaret” is a one-woman madcap musical fever dream featuring a parade of history’s most powerful women visiting a certain presidential candidate on the eve of her nomination with words of caution, advice and inspiration in the form of hilarious song parodies and a tour-de-“farce” performance by Julie Lyn Barber. The quick-change cabaret features over a dozen historic characters paired with parodies of classic songs to comic effect. When the “Hillary-ous” candidate falls into a hallucinatory fog just prior to delivering her nomination speech, she finds herself face-to-face with sonorous supporters including Cleopatra singing “Don’t Asp Me Why”, Queen Victoria asking “Do You Want To Know A Secret?”, Eleanor Roosevelt pining “Teeth Me Tonight”, Catherine the Great praising “All The Things You Czar”, Indira Gandhi crooning “Bang! Bang! Bangladesh!” and Margaret Thatcher revealing that the “Iron Lady is a Tramp.” Other historical figures portrayed by Ms. Barber include Empress Theodora, Empress Wu Zetien, Empress Maria Theresa, Queen Isabella I of Castille, Elanor of Aquataine, Joan of Arc, Queen Elizabeth I and Golda Meier. The play, while not technically a “sequel,” exists in the same theatrical world as Main Street Artists’ first IndyFringe production “Madwomen’s Late Nite Cabaret,” which also performed at the Montreal Fringe Festival in Canada as well as venues in Portland, Oregon, and Muncie, Farmland and Indianapolis, Indiana.
“WHO RUN THE WORLD: A Madwomen’s Cabaret,” a production of Main Street Artists, stars Julie Lyn Barber, and is written and directed by Darrin Murrell. Main Street Artists is an arts and entertainment production company based in Parker City, IN. In addition to theatrical productions, Main Street Artists also offers musical acts ranging from classical to jazz to roots and bluegrass for concerts, festivals and events throughout the region as well as workshops and educational outreach music and arts programming. This is the fifth Main Street Artists production to be selected for performance at the Indianapolis Fringe Festival since 2009.
Darrin Murrell has worked as a professional actor, director, producer, playwright and educator for over 30 years with theatres all across the country including extensive work in Chicago, Illinois and Portland, Oregon. He is a member of Actors Equity Association, the professional actors union, and is seen regularly on stage locally at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre and Actor’s Theatre of Indiana. He has also performed at The Human Race Theatre in Dayton, Ohio and at Texas Shakespeare Festival in Kilgore, Texas. He has served as Executive Director of Muncie Civic Theatre, President of the Indiana Community Theatre League, Regional Representative to the American Association of Community Theatres and Managing Director of Historic Farmland USA. Previously produced plays by Mr. Murrell include “Cabaret Absinthe,” “Menagerie Macabre,” “Hoagy & Cole: Indiana Music on My Mind,“ “Gershwin: An American Heritage Cabaret,“ and an adaptation of A.A. Milne’s “The World of Pooh.“ He lives on his family’s homestead farm in Parker City, Indiana with his wife and two children.
Dr. Julie Lyn Barber is a Canadian actor, singer and playwright who now makes Indiana her home. She holds a Doctor of Arts degree from Ball State University and is an Associate Professor of Theatre at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Dr. Barber is also an accomplished playwright. Her plays have been selected for Indianapolis' DivaFest in 2010 and 2011 and she won an Indiana Arts Commission grant to write two new pantos. As an actor and singer, she has appeared with numerous companies across the U.S. and Canada including Portland Center Stage, Portland Opera Association and Northwest Classical Theatre Company in Oregon, Theatre Under the Stars in Vancouver, BC and The Round Barn Theatre at Amish Acres in Nappanee, Indiana. Some of her favorite roles include Sheila in A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, Sister Amnesia in Nunsense, The Witch in Into the Woods and Moth in Love's Labors Lost. She will return to Indianapolis in October to re-reprise another favorite role, Berenice in Q Artistry's Cabaret Poe.

Theatergoers at Encore Dinner Theatre in Tustin
At the newly remodeled Encore Dinner Theatre in Tustin, we talked to some theatergoers about their experience after seeing Fiddler on The Roof. Encore has undergone a 2 million dollar renovation and is the only theatre in the nation where the chandeliers rise into the ceiling at the curtain call like the NY Met. The new theatre is tiered seating without a bad seat in the house. Encore is breaking the myth of the dinner theatre of old.
