Sunken City Brewing Company
Enjoying a great-tasting beer is an American tradition. It’s good on the golf course, goes well with an afternoon on the dock and is the perfect complement to a leisurely dinner with friends. Beer is even better when you can boast it was made in your own community. Smith Mountain Lake became the recipient of its own microbrewery, Sunken City Brewing Company, in May. Owner and lake resident Jerome Parnell created Dam Lager, the brand’s original brew, in 2010. It was produced at a Roanoke brewery until moving back “home” – to the place that inspired its name.
“It’s the first time the beer has actually been brewed right here at the lake. It’s something residents can take ownership of and be proud of right in their own community,” said Parnell.
The 8,800-square-foot brewery, located at Westlake Towne Center, cost more than $2 million to build and consists of a brewhouse, fermentation area, canning room, tap room and outdoor beer garden.
On tap at Sunken City – whose name Parnell said is a nod to the community of Monroe, which was flooded in the mid-1960s when SML was filled – are the signature Dam Lager, Red Clay IPA and an unnamed brown ale not yet in full production. In addition, brewmaster Jeremy Kirby is releasing small-batch beers each weekend as a way to gauge the particular tastes of lake-area patrons.
The brewery’s interior tap room is decorated in a lake-oriented theme, the centerpiece being a huge wall mural of the lake that overlays an older map of the flooded areas. Pittsylvania County author and historian Herman Melton’s account of how Monroe failure to develop into an official town led to its sunken demise makes for an intriguing tasting room read and appropriate name for a grassroots brewery.
A brewery in his own community was Parnell’s vision but required vital partnerships. Long-time area developer The Willard Companies helped make the dream a reality. “Our first conversations began almost three years ago,” said Lee Willard, the company’s vice president of corporate holdings. “Dam Lager was a big hit around the lake, and we knew Jerome was onto something. We helped in any way we could during the design phase, and then sold him the land [at Westlake Towne Center].”
Kirby moved to Smith Mountain Lake just before the brewery’s opening to take position as brewmaster. The California native trained at the VLB Institute in Berlin, Germany, and has managed breweries in Nebraska and Colorado. “Jeremy and I have personalities that complement one another,” said Parnell. “It’s a big deal to have a German-trained brewmaster here at the lake.” Kirby said he’s looking forward to exploring the SML area – as soon as he can take a break from making beer.
“The guy has been working around the clock here since the beginning,” said Parnell. “He understands that to build a brewery we have to hit the gas on all aspects – from selling beer at the bar, distributing, developing products and getting cans.”
Sunken City is open Wednesday through Sunday year-round. Friday nights feature live music and food vended by area food trucks.
Smith Mountain Lake locals Steve and Peggy Owens said they stop by at least once a week to enjoy the atmosphere, often bringing along their two daughters. Steve said he likes the Dam Lager while Peggy prefers the Skinny Dip, a lighter, unfiltered version of Dam Lager available as a small-batch brew most weekends.
“We enjoy spending time together over good beer,” Peggy Owen said. “The Parnells are a wonderful asset to our community, and they recognized the importance of being family-friendly when they put the brewery together.” Not only have Smith Mountain Lake residents welcomed Sunken City with open arms, out-of-town visitors have flocked to the craft brewery as well.
“We saw close to 1,200 visitors in our first month,” Parnell said. “There are two types coming from out of town: some who are beer tourists and some who are agritourist-types interested in the brewery itself. We’ve had people from Richmond, Greensboro and a lot from Roanoke.”
Anheuser-Busch wholesalers in Roanoke, Lynchburg and Danville distribute the Sunken City brand to many restaurants in Southwest Virginia, including several at SML. As the brand goes out, Sunken City supporters hope fans will follow it back here.
“Jerome is a believer in Smith Mountain Lake and will have all of his beers branded as ‘brewed at Smith Mountain Lake,’” Willard said. “This will only serve to drive more interest and exposure to our area.”

Brewtopia: The Quest for the World's Greatest Beer Ep 1 Seg 3
Join host Mikon Haaksman as he travels to Houston, Texas in search of the best beer in the world. In this segment, Mikon visits the famous Saint Arnold Brewery and learns about the company and people that make this place great.
While I was at the West Alabama Ice House, I learned that one of the most popular brands of beer they sell is Saint Arnold. So I decided to check out one of their weekly brewery tours. And this is what I found when I got there. Saint Arnold Brewery is the oldest microbrewery in Texas. It was founded by two old friends, Brock Wagner and Kevin Bartol, after they worked in the real world for a few years and decided that brewing beer was a much better way to live.
As I was waiting for the tour to begin I talked to a few eager guests. This is actually my first and I had to buy one. So you're a Saint Arnold virgin. I am a virgin. Popping a cherry today. And it feels great! It feels great!
Now what really struck me about this was the number of people that started streaming in. They told me that they actually have to turn people away - it gets so crowded.
We're getting started to do the beer tour. You can see that there's a whole lot of people coming in here. And there's probably going to be about 700 people alone today. And everyone brings in their own food, coming in with their friends, their family. Kids are welcome and it's gonna be a really good time.
Did I mention it's hot in Houston? Up on the podium was Lennie Ambrose - one of the brewery's 17 employees extolling the virtues of their beer. And he talked really fast. Probably because he knew why everyone was there. Alright, let's drink some beer, peeps! Taps are open! Cheers, everyone! Enjoy yourselves!
For five bucks you get a souvenir glass and five tokens with which you can sample whatever they have on tap. But here's where it gets really cool: I'll let her explain.
The secret is if you get like the big steins or the pint glasses, they only fill them up halfway - and that is just a lie. They fill it up all the way to like the rim. That is awesome!
So, what makes Saint Arnold so special? One of the brewery volunteers offered to walk me through and try and explain the process, and, you guessed it, it's made much like any other beer; hops, barley, malt, water, yeast, cold storage. Hold on. Cold storage? Yeah! It's freakin' hot in Houston! It honestly doesn't matter what you show me right now because it feels so good in here. Yeah, this is a favorite place.
And the beer has one heck of a following - obviously. For example, these two hot ladies come here every week when they can. It's a cool environment. We've been coming here for a long time. For like five years now. So, we like to meet new people and just hang out. The one on the left just returned from Iraq. She probably thinks it's cool here.
And this woman is a nurse. A pediatric nurse to be exact. I called in sick to work. You called in sick to work? Okay... But to be fair, I've been there a year and I haven't taken any vacation, never called in sick. And so my PTO is just accumulating and I'm maxed out, so I have to start using it. Wow! She'd rather let sick children suffer than miss out on this beer.
And then there's this guy. We'll call him the evangelist. What makes Saint Arnold unique is not just that is comes from a couple Rice guys, you know from the local university, but more that they get involved in the community. They're out numerous times of the year, and they release certain beers called the 'Divine Series.' And they welcome people into their brewery. They care about distinguishing between different types of beers. They care about allowing you to taste unique flavors. They'll allow you to private events. Now when did you fill out your application for the job?
And I guess it's no wonder you'd have such a religious following when your company logo is an actual saint. And who was Saint Arnold? He was the patron saint of brewers. And how did he achieve sainthood? Well, quoting the brewery itself, a year after he died, the citizens of Metz, in France requested that Saint Arnold's body be exhumed and ceremoniously carried to their home town for reburial in the Church of the Holy Apostle. During this voyage a miracle came to pass when the tired porters and followers stopped for a rest and walked into a tavern for a drink of their favorite beverage. Regretfully, there was only one mug of beer to be shared. But that mug never ran dry and all of the thirsty pilgrims were satisfied.
And Saint Arnold did something else too. He helped make beer popular by extolling it's virtues. See, in the Middle Ages, drinking water could be unhealthy - even lethal. But because part of the beer making process involves boiling water it was much safer to drink. Plus, the fermentation process gave the beer an added side effect...as you can see here.
Cooperstown Brewing Co.
With Central New York’s strong roots in baseball and beer, it only made sense that Cooperstown Brewing Co. would bring the two together when it opened in 1995.
The brewery continues to use recipes crafted by famed brewer Alan Pugsley in its English-style ales and the system developed by Peter Austin, considered by many to be the godfather of microbrewing. CooperstownBrewing makes its ales with Austin’s signature brick-insulated copper kettles, wooden mash tuns and open fermenters.
The brewery uses a 150-year-old strain of Ringwood yeast born in Yorkshire, England, but will soon add some local flavor in the mix.Renowned for hop production in the late 1800s, the Cooperstown area is again filling up with producers that will contribute to the brewery’s recipes soon.
Whether tipping a farm-to-glass beer at a brewpub, sampling some moonshine or enjoying a sip of hard cider or wine, you’ll be a part of something special in Brew Central. Central New York brewers, distillers, publicans and vintners offer the state’s best craft beverages on par with any of the United States’ finest pints. Saint Arnold Brewing Co. Santo Black Kölsch Beer Review
Thanks for joining us again ladies and gentlemen - welcome to the TTT! This time around we've got the third and final brew that was brought back from Houston, TX during a recent trip - this is the Saint Arnold Brewing Co. Santo, a black kölsch in style which comes in at 4.7% ABV. The description on the website reads:
Santo is a black Kölsch, which technically doesn’t exist as a style, but this is as close as we can come to describing it. Essentially it is brewed using a Kölsch recipe with the addition of Munich and black malt. It is light bodied and floral yet with a distinct dark malt flavor. Our goal was to create a dark yet refreshing beer that would pair perfectly with a plate of enchiladas.
The label artwork is by Houston artist Carlos Hernandez who is known for his Day of the Dead Rock Star series of paintings and prints.
Original Gravity: 1.045 (11.4° Plato)
Color: Dark
Bitterness: 17 IBU
Alcohol Content: By weight - 3.7%; By volume - 4.7%
Malted Barley:
This beer is brewed with a combination of pale 2 row, pils and Munich malted barley along with a small amount of black malt. We import the world's best pils malt to create the light yet rich malt body.
Hops:
We use a single hop variety in this beer: Hallertauer Hersbrucker. Four separate additions to the brew kettle create the delicate flavor and aroma of this classic hop.
Yeast:
We use our traditional Kölsch yeast in this beer, fermented on the cooler side.
