New Orleans 2020 Brewery Guide
New Orleans, once a place with year-old IPAs collecting dust, is slowly turning into the next American craft beer city in need of a local guide.
Consider, early 2015 the entire state of Louisiana was home to only 17 breweries. A small number compared to visiting any major American craft beer destination city.
Some could argue with so many breweries oversaturating the market, finding a decent craft brew on vacation or checking out the latest release can become overwhelming.
But down in the Big Easy, New Orleans brews a new drinking culture for all locals and visitors to taste.
As the locals know, and any frequent visitor may discover, a whole other world exists beyond Bourbon and Canal Streets.
Adventuring into other New Orleans neighborhoods explores diverse atmospheres, energetic vibes, local seasonal favorites and refreshing experiences at some of our newest breweries.
While everyone else has enjoyed drinking fresh IPAs since 2011, New Orleans finally decided to make a move—the 6-month window from December 2016 to May 2017 brought New Orleans 5 new breweries.
Now, several years after the American craft beer boom, more locals and tourists are diving into the craft beer scene.
Check out our recent trip to 6 local breweries:
-Parleaux Beer Lab, Bywater neighborhood
-Brieux Carre Brewing, Marigny neighborhood
-Urban South Brewing, Uptown neighborhood
-NOLA Brewing, Uptown
-Miel Brewery & Taproom, Uptown
-Port Orleans Brewing, Uptown

The Brewery Everyone Is Talking About In Your State
Sometimes grabbing a cold one at your localsports barjust won't cut it. Instead, go straight to the source and have a drink at one of the best breweries in America to sample endless varieties of beer on tap and peek behind the scenes of the beer-making process on a brewery tour.
Glacier BrewHouse, AnchorageGreat beer, and possibly the best fish I have ever had. Get the sockeye or halibut, both incredible!
Good People Brewing Company, BirminghamSome of the best beers in Birmingham. The newly renovated taproom is amazing, with an outdoor area.
Lost Forty Brewing, Little RockExcellent atmosphere, great food and even better beer. The pimento cheese is a must order.
Mother Road Brewing Company, FlagstaffWhat a great find! Very friendly bartender, nice interior with a hipsterish vibe and, most importantly, great homebrewed beer!
AleSmith Brewing Company, San DiegoGreat place to taste seasonal and special editions. They also offer tours if you are interested.
Odell Brewing Company, Fort CollinsExcellent, excellent brewery! Friendly staff, great beer, and a beautiful outdoor space.
Two Roads Brewing Company, StratfordOne of my new favorite breweries. Delicious beer, food trucks outside, and they'll even send a bus to pick you up from the train station.
DC Brau Brewing Co, Washington D.C.Took a tour and learned a lot about canning beer that I didn't know before. They have a great double IPA.
Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, MiltonThey treat you like kings and queens. Four free beer samples before a free tour, plus if you are lucky enough you'll get to see the owner, Sam Calagione.
Cigar City Brewing, TampaI have yet to try a beer that I don't like ... including IPAs and I'm not normally a huge fan. Good Gourd is fantastic.
Monday Night Brewery, AtlantaOne of my favorite place to have fun with my friends and great outside seating, music and beers. Great atmosphere and friendly staff.
Kona Brewing Co. & Brewpub, KailuaOne of my favorite breweries ... food is good here and they try to use local ingredients, but what is best is they serve many beers that they only make available in Hawaii. Like Lavaman Red Ale.
Confluence Brewing Company, Des MoinesDelicious beer, my favorite local spot, watch for food trucks in front, and accessible from the bike path. - Foursquare userRobbie Helzer
10 Barrel Brewing, BoiseCasual, great for warmer weather with the semi-outdoor seating. Delicious food and phenomenal beer!
Revolution Brewing, ChicagoRevolution is a premier microbrewery in Chicago, and the tap house is the perfect place to shake a fist at conventional beer. With tons of beers on tap I recommend starting with their Anti-Hero!
Sun King Brewing Co., IndianapolisCome here to find the best brews in Indy! Also, while you're here check out their tours and get yourself a growler.
Free State Brewing Company, LawrenceA Lawrence, KS. must stop ... one of the best places in Kansas to stop for lunch or dinner and award-winning beers.
Braxton Brewing Company, CovingtonTruly the tap room of the future! Great guys running an amazing brewery in historic Covington Kentucky.
NOLA Brewing, New OrleansAwesome IPAs, extremely knowledgable staff and great BBQ to perfectly compliment your beer. Overall great experience.
Samuel Adams Brewery, BostonFree tours every 40 minutes. Great atmosphere, very funny and gentle guides and free beer after the tour.
Union Craft Brewing, BaltimoreLove sitting in the beer garden on a nice summer day. Great brews and often a tasty food truck!
Allagash Brewing Company, PortlandGreat (free) tour with an amazing beer tasting at the end! Put yourself on the wait list if you didn't get a spot on the tour, they will often squeeze you in.
Short's Brewing Company, BellaireQuite possibly the best craft beer being produced in the U.S. And, the food at the pub is inspired and the staff is great in every way. Don't miss this stop!!!!!
Surly Brewing Company, MinneapolisThe best craft beer and unique food selection. Food is higher end and not typical bar fare.
Boulevard Brewing Co, Kansas CityTake the Smokestack tour. Worth every penny.
Crooked Letter Brewing Company, Ocean SpringsGreat tour - much more than your normal brewery tour. A lot of chemistry but they dumb it down.
Tamarack Brewing Company, LakesideThis place has a great porch to eat and drink. Not only that but the staff is friendly and the place overall had a sense of humor (they have an am-brew-lance).
Fullsteam Brewery, DurhamReally enjoyed the variety of beers here! They also have a great selection of board games to play while you drink.
The Fargo Brewing Company, FargoGet the wood chipper IPA and make sure to try the specialty keg that changes weekly! - Foursquare userCasey Hillrud
Lucky Bucket Brewing Company & Cut Spike Distillery, La VistaTours are a fun way to try a few brews and pours while learning more about the beer manufacturing process. - Foursquare userSarah Davelaar

We're back in St Pete, Florida to visit Green Bench Brewing. Named after the city's famous green benches this brewery has immersed itself in its local culture while brewing styles the locals had never even heard of. In doing so they've led a mini beer and culture revolution. We talk the challenges of licensing, the haze craze and mixed ferm brewing, as well as the controversial history of the green bench itself.

Florida has been regarded by many beer lovers as a beer wasteland and in many instances, especially in Florida's modern era, that reputation has been deserved. However, there is a pedigree of brewing in the Sunshine State and the epicenter of Florida's brewing past was the city of Tampa.
The first brewery in the state of Florida was located in Tampa in present day Ybor City. The Florida Brewing Company (Later renamed the Tampa Florida Brewing Company) was founded by cigar industrialists in 1896 and survived until 1961. The La Tropical line including an ale and bock were brewery mainstays. The La Tropical line of beers were a distinct line from the La Tropical beer brewed in Cuba.
Today the building which was home to the Tampa Florida Brewing Company houses a law firm. When it was built in 1896 it was the tallest building in the city of Tampa at six stories tall. It remains the tallest building in Ybor City to this day.
The next brewery to call Tampa home was the Southern Brewing Company which opened in downtown Tampa at 700 East Zack Street in 1934 and operated until 1957. SB Beer and Silver Bar Ale were staple products. Label design for SB beer featured distinctive image of The University of Tampa prominently along with an illustration of pirates, long a part of Tampa lore. Southern also produced a Sparkling Ale and Premium Lager under the Silver Bar name as well as an SB Bock. Additional beers were Old Tampa Beer, Wurzburger Dark Beer and Florida Special Beer.
The relatively wide range of beers provides some proof that prior to WWII lager, while immensely popular, did not have the stranglehold on the market that it enjoyed from the late 60's into the late 80's. Ales were produced by many regional breweries, even in less beer savvy states such as Florida, and appear to have sold well in the marketplace.
The Desoto Brewing Company was a short lived brewery located at 1202 N Howard Avenue in what is now referred to as the NoHo District of West Tampa. Opened in 1934 the brewery had shut its doors by 1936. DeSoto Brewing produced Colonial Ale and Desoto Beer. Sadly, very little is known about the brewery and almost nothing exists in the way of labels or bottles due to the breweries short existence.
The Ybor City Brewing Company operated in Ybor City from 1994 to 2003. Five beers were brewed at the spacious brick building which housed the brewery. Ybor Gold Amber, Brown Ale, Gaspar's Porter, Calusa Wheat and Light. The brands were later purchased by the Florida Brewing Company in Melbourne, FL where they are brewed today.

BELO HORIZONTE, Minas Gerais, Brazil - Many of the most well known chefs and cooks in Brazil are from Minas Gerais state, and they are known throughout Brazil for their food. In this Brazilian food tour of Belo Horizonte, we ate some seriously meaty dishes, and spicy chili peppers.
Mercado Central de Belo Horizonte - To begin we started at the central market, a beautiful and very clean and organised market where you can get all the produce and artisanal foods of Minas Gerais. The chili peppers in particular stood out to me, of all different kinds and we couldn’t help but buy a bhut jolokia (ghost chili).
Rei Do Torresmo - King of Crackling - We continued on to Rei Do Torresmo for some serious pork cracklings and fried pork belly followed by liver sauteed with onions and scarlet eggplant - this was my favorite dish of breakfast. The owner also poured us a glass of cachaça - sugarcane spirit which is famous throughout Brazil, but possibly most famous in Minas Gerais. Total price - 40 BRL ($10.10)
Pão de queijo - Another Brazilian food you have to eat in Belo Horizonte is cheese bread, and this one filled with turkey as well - it was cheese on cheese, a cheese lovers dream. Price - 11 BRL ($2.78)
Nonô - O Rei do Caldo de Mocotó - Another dish to eat in Belo Horizonte is Mocotó, a cow hoof stew of soup that’s basically melted liquid meat. It was rich and hearty and so meaty and delicious. I especially loved their spiked hot sauce. Price - 10 BRL ($2.53)
Café Palhares - One of the legendary restaurant cafes in Belo Horizonte is Cafe Palhares, and you must order their KAOL - an acronym for cachaça, rice, eggs, sausage. It’s a one plate meal deal and represents the food of Belo Horizonte. Price - 18.80 BRL ($4.75) per plate
Mirante do Mangabeiras - In the afternoon to take a food rest, we took a drive up the side of the mountain for an amazing view of the city.
Bar Do Careca - For dinner on this Brazilian food tour of Belo Horizonte, we went to Bar Do Careca an actual bar, but more of a restaurant than a bar. Along with a few other local Minas Gerais dishes, we tried feijão tropeiro, possibly the national dish of the area. Watching it being made was spectacular, and it was just as good as it looked. Total price - 156 BRL ($39.41)
Belo Horizonte and the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, is a fantastic city in Brazil that’s passionate about food.
