Beijing Great Wall layover - plan, tips, cost - 2019
Layovers could be boring or exciting adventures.
This is our experience in Beijing on 11 May’19. We had wonderful and incredible 5 hours seeing one of the new 7 Wonders of the World. We highly recommend it!
The good think of getting private driver/guide is that you don't book and pre-pay online! You can pay cash at the end.
Thanks to our private guide everything went smooth, calm and on time. Joe is really nice, friendly and knowledgeable person. His English is very good and easy to communicate to. Really, he's great! That’s how you can find him if you choose that option:
You can find more info on
I hope you’ll find that helpful. Have a GREAT wallover ;)

How to travel from the Beijing Airport (PEK) to the city
There are three options to travel to the center of Beijing from the Beijing Capital airport.
The simplest is the taxi. always have you destination name and address in writing in Chinese as the driver will not understand English. A taxi to the center if the city is about ¥100 plus toll if any. There is no tipping in China.
A popular alternative is to take the Airport Express to then transfer to the subway. As long as you do not have a ton of luggage and are not traveling during peak hours, this is a good alternative. Cost is ¥25 for the train plus the cost of the subway tickets. Here is a good subway map: On the airport website you can find up to date details about operating hours:
The final choice is the shuttle buses. There are many bus lines covering a good part of the city. This is our preferred transportation but you need to know which bus is closest to your destination and where to get off. On this website you can find the list of buses, their stops and operating hours:

How to go to the Great Wall Mutianyu by public bus
This video shows how to get to the Great Wall at Mutianyu in Beijing by public bus.
Here is a summary of how to do it:
- Take the subway line 2 to the Dongzhimen station
- Take exit C and follow signs to the Transport Center
- Enter the transport center (next to the KFC) and look for bus 916 Express
- 916 Express is written as 916块
- bus fare is 12RMB or 6RMB if you have the transportation card (Yikatong)
- The bus takes a little over one hour to reach the village of Huairou. In Huairou you get off at the Huairou Bei Da Jie stop. Stops are announced in Chinese only. Let the driver know that you are getting off at Beijing-based Da Jie.
* **One or two stops before Bed Da Jie, someone will stick their head in the bus and yell Mutianyu Great Wall and wave you out. Do not pay attention to the scammers. The will overcharge you to take you there.***
- At Bei Da Die, cross the street to take bus H23 or H24 (5RMB). The ride will be about 15-20 minutes.
- Near that bus stop there will be some drivers with mini vans who will offer to take you to Mutianyu. It is ok to take these vans but negotiate a rate of 5RMB per person.
- Note that when returning to Beijing, you will take bus 916 at this bus stop.

Beijing China Getting a taxi to The Great Wall
Our tour guide Joey making the deal!
Great Wall of China - Best Scenery Mutianyu
The Great Wall. Huairou District, China.
We left Beijing in the early morning to reach the Mutianyu Great Wall, one of the best preserved sections. The other famous options are Badaling which is usually a lot more crowded and Jinshanling which is farther and the area was under reconstruction when we visited China.
In Beijing we booked a private transfer to the Great Wall and the service was excellent. I can highly recommend Mark’s Guide & Driver Service. The trip by car was around one hour and a half since there wasn't a lot of traffic.
We bought the tickets for the entrance, the cableway (chair lift) to reach the Great Wall and the Toboggan Run (Slideway / Luge) to come back and we paid around 160 CNY for each person.
The cable car took us near the tower N.4 and we first headed east towards the tower N.1 the Big Corner. After that we went back and we headed west until we reached the last tower N.23 of the Mutianyu Great Wall section. Besides that tower, you'll find a section of the wild Jiankou Great Wall that hasn't been restored. The view and the panorama were amazing, stunning, breathtaking! It was the best scenery with a clear sky and orange, yellow, green leaves and trees!
On the way back we took the Slideway / Luge. The Toboggan Run was fun but since it was crowded unfortunatly it wasn't possible to go down at full speed.
Eventually our driver took us back to Beijing.
If you want to save money, you can also choose to reach the Mutianyu Great Wall using the public transports.
We visited the Great Wall in October, which is one of the best time along with April, May and September.

Tianjin is a metropolis in northern China and one of the five national central cities of the People's Republic of China (PRC). It is governed as one of the four direct-controlled municipalities of the PRC, and is thus under direct administration of the central government. Tianjin borders Hebei Province and Beijing Municipality, bounded to the east by the Bohai Gulf portion of the Yellow Sea. Part of the Bohai Economic Rim, it is the largest coastal city in northern China.
Beijing is the capital of the People's Republic of China and one of the most populous cities in the world. The population as of 2013 was 21,150,000. The city proper is the 3rd largest in the world.[citation needed] The metropolis, located in northern China, is governed as a direct-controlled municipality under the national government, with 14 urban and suburban districts and two rural counties. Beijing Municipality is surrounded by Hebei Province with the exception of neighboring Tianjin Municipality to the southeast.

What we wish we knew about the Great Wall: So many STAIRS!
The Great Wall of China is one of those Bucket List type of experiences. You won't really appreciate how magnificent it is without actually seeing it, but of course, most of us won't get that chance, so we feel extremely blessed to have had this opportunity.
We started our day, hoping for a nice cup of Starbucks coffee (the hotel coffee is ok but we were craving something good). Unfortunately, Starbucks in Beijing doesn't open up as early as it does here in the U.S!
One of the great benefits for Hilton Diamond members at the DoubleTree in Beijing where we stayed is the complimentary breakfast, which includes many eastern and western selections. There is a full made-to-order noodle/ ramen bar which is very tasty and authentic.
For our tour, we booked through Tours by Jessie which includes a private car with driver, and a private tour guide. She also takes care of everything (ticket purchases, etc) so that all we have to do is simply enjoy the experience. We highly recommend their services - toursbyjessie.com I believe they are on Trip Advisor as well. Our tour guide was Lisa, and she was great. The drive from the hotel to the Mutainyu Great Wall is about 1.5 to 2 hours, mainly because of traffic in the city.
As always, we are so thankful to the Lord for opportunities to travel like this. It's only by His grace that we are able to have the time, the physical ability, and then the spiritual refreshment that comes in our travels!

Why Beijing drivers have to keep 'calendar' in mind?
Remembering what's the day today is a very important thing for many Beijing drivers, as they will be punished if they forget it and drive their cars onto roads on a wrong
day.
That's because Beijing municipal government has required all private cars in the city not to move during particular hours in one working day each week, in order to
ease traffic jam and reduce air pollution.
