TRAVELLING TO BEIJING - BEIJING ZOO
The Beijing Zoo is a zoological park in Beijing, the capital of the People's Republic of China, in Xicheng District. Founded in 1906 during the late Qing dynasty, it is one of the oldest zoos in China. The zoo is also a center of zoological research that studies and breeds rare animals from various continents.
The zoo occupies an area of 89 hectares (220 acres), including 5.6 hectares (14 acres) hectares of lakes and ponds. It has one of the largest animal collections in the country. The zoo and its aquarium have over 450 species of land animals and over 500 species of marine animals; in all, it is home to 14,500 animals.[when?][1]
More than six million people visit the zoo each year. Like many of Beijing's parks, the zoo's grounds resemble classical Chinese gardens, with flower beds amidst natural scenery, including dense groves of trees, stretches of meadows, small streams and rivers, lotus pools, and hills dotted with pavilions and historical buildings.[citation needed]
The Beijing Zoo is well known for its collection of rare animals endemic to China including the giant pandas, which are zoo's most popular animals, The red panda (Ailurus fulgens), native to the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China, the golden snub-nosed monkey, South China tiger, white-lipped deer, Pere David's deer, crested ibis, Chinese alligator, and Chinese giant salamander. Other endangered or threatened species housed there include a Siberian tiger, yak, Przewalski's horse, snow leopard, Tibetan gazelle, and kiang. The zoo also has a broad collection of megafauna such as addax, Asian black bears, Asian and African elephants, bats, beluga whales, chimpanzees, clouded leopards, flamingos, gorillas, hippopotamuses, jaguars, kangaroos, lemurs, lions, muntjac, otters, penguins, polar bears, rhinoceroses, sea turtles, tapirs, and zebras, as well as 13 of the world's 15 species of cranes.

GoPro Cause: IFAW - Releasing Raptors Off The Great Wall of China
Join Brant Backlund and Mike Booth in Beijing as they document The International Fund for Animal Welfare's (IFAW) rescue, rehabilitation, and release of the birds of prey that inhabit the area.
IFAW rescues wild birds of prey in and around Beijing, China at the Beijing Raptor Rescue Center (BRRC). Beijing is in the middle of a large migration route, where the city’s urbanization and subsequent loss of habitat puts many birds at risk for injury or illness. Additionally, many birds are harmed from illegal capture and trade. The BRRC is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing birds of prey back into the wild to help these populations continue to thrive. Furthermore, the BRRC works to educate both public citizens and policymakers about the importance of wildlife protection and the importance of combatting wildlife crime.
Since the center opened in 2001, the BRRC has rescued over 4,000 birds of prey from 30 species including hawks, eagles and owls. Fifty-five percent of the raptor patients that came to the center have been successfully released back into the wild.
But to continue this great work, the BRRC needs your help. Just $30 can provide a month’s worth of food for one critically injured falcon or owl, while $50 can support the initial medical care for a raptor. Please join GoPro and donate today, helping reach BRRC’s goal of $90,000.

Video: Africa’s donkeys slaughtered to make Chinese ‘miracle elixir’

FRANCE 24 live news stream: all the latest news 24/7
Every year, China slaughters millions of donkeys to make Ejiao, a traditional medicine hailed as a ‘miracle elixir’ which is used to treat various ailments. As China’s donkey population plummets, Chinese firms are now forced to turn to African donkeys – at the risk of wiping them out. Our correspondents in China and Kenya – Elodie Cousin, Bastien Renouil, Antoine Vedeilhe and Charlie Wang – went to investigate.
Warning: Viewers may find some of these images upsetting.
Ejiao, a traditional Chinese medicine used for nearly 2,000 years, had almost disappeared. But in the past few years, it’s made a comeback on pharmacy shelves and in other Chinese wellness stores. With claims it can thin the blood, reduce the effects of chemotherapy or even improve libido, the Chinese can’t get enough of this supposed miracle remedy. But it’s expensive, costing up to €600 a kilo. Although it can be consumed in drinks, cakes or even pills, the main ingredient required for its preparation never varies: gelatine extracted from donkey skins.
In the space of 25 years, China’s donkey population has fallen by half. Due to strong demand for Ejiao from the country’s emerging middle class, there are now only five million donkeys left in the country. The industrial firms at the centre of this lucrative trade have now turned to a new source of donkeys: Africa.
Donkeys threatened with extinction in Kenya
But China’s appetite for Ejiao is putting Africa’s donkey populations at risk. Satisfying market demand would require up to ten million of them per year, but there are only 44 million donkeys on the planet. Several countries, such as Niger or Tanzania, have had no choice but to ban the trade in donkey skins. But abuse is widespread. Some traders import donkeys illegally from countries where their slaughter is banned, while others go so far as to steal farm animals, even attacking them at night in their pens.
Our reporters in Kenya followed the trail of Ejiao in the country, which currently has around 1.8 million donkeys. Since 2016, three specialised slaughterhouses owned by Chinese entrepreneurs have opened and tens of thousands of animals are killed there every year. Their skins are then sent by container ship to Hong Kong, via the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. Animal welfare NGOs are sounding the alarm. At this rate, within six years, the donkey – a beast of burden essential for work in the fields – could disappear from Kenya altogether.

Inside Hong Kong’s cage homes
When houses are the size of parking spaces.

With original music by Tom Fox:
Hong Kong is the most expensive housing market in the world. It has been ranked as the least affordable housing market on Earth for eight years in a row, and the price per square foot seems to be only going up. The inflated prices are forcing Hongkongers to squeeze into unconventionally small spaces that can affect their quality of life.
Tens of thousands of Hongkongers are living in spaces that range from 75 to 140 square feet. To put that in perspective, the average parking space in the US is about 150 square feet. And in the most extreme cases, Hongkongers have resorted to homes the size of a coffin.
I spent some time exploring the living situation in Hong Kong to find out why housing has become so expensive and spaces so tight.
To understand how Hong Kong’s housing market turned out this way and see how it’s affecting people’s lives, watch the final episode of Borders Hong Kong.
