The Crown - Martley, Worcestershire
The Crown at Martley is a traditional country Pub that has undergone a very tasteful and classy update. The Original part of the Pub still maintains it’s classic Pub features, 2 Pool Tables. darts, fruit machines, juke box, tv’s and bar area.
The Modern part of The Crown at Martley is a spacious and sophisticated dining area, lounge and large main bar.
The Crown has excellent Dining facilities providing top notch food including traditional Pub food.
The Crown is also Dog & Family friendly with it’s large garden area, complete with a bouncy castle.
The Crown is a fantastic location for great dining experience, traditional Pub amenities and of course the Beer garden, lawn and patio area.

Rare Edward VIII Royal Cipher Bangor Post Office Co Down
I'm down in the seaside town Bangor. Now here's a bit of interesting social history for you.This royal cipher plaque outside the main entrance to the main Post Office shows the Edward VIII insignia in bronze. It is rare because although it has the monogram EVIIIR and the Tudor Crown above it. This is for a king was never crowned! Edward VIII had a reign of less than 11 months in 1936, because he abdicated, he never received a coronation in Westminster Abbey. When the cypher was put on the new post office, it was obviously assumed that Edward would be crowned king. How many people buying stamps etc in Bangor are aware of the fasciating history linked to the bronze cypher outside? I think that there may be only one other working post office in the UK that has the same special insignia (due to his abdication). Edward has his crown forever on Bangor Main Street. One that he never got at Westminister Abbey!

Edward was officially invested as Prince of Wales at Caernarfon Castle on 13 July 1911
Midshipman for three months aboard the battleship Hindustan.
Keen horseman and polo player.
Left Oxford without any qualifications.
WW1, Edward was keen to participate. He had joined the Grenadier Guards in June 1914. Lord Kitchener refused to allow it. Edward witnessed trench warfare first-hand and visited the front line as often as he could. This made him popular among veterans of the conflict.
Keen aviator, -first military flight in 1918, later gained a pilot's licence. First monarch to fly in an aircraft.
Throughout the 1920s, Edward, represented his father at home and abroad on many occasions. His rank, travels, good looks, and unmarried status gained him much public attention, and at the height of his popularity, he was the most photographed celebrity of his time.

In 1917 a love affair with Parisian courtesan Marguerite Alibert.
In 1918 to begin one with a married English textile heiress, Freda Dudley Ward.
Edward's 'womanising and reckless behaviour' during the 1920s and 1930s worried Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin andKing George V.
In 1930, he continued his relationships with a series of married women, including Freda Dudley Ward and Lady Furness, the American who introduced the prince to her friend and fellow American Wallis Simpson. Mrs Simpson had divorced her first husband, U.S. naval officer Win Spencer, in 1927. Her second husband, Ernest Simpson, was a British-American businessman. Wallis Simpson and the Prince of Wales, became lovers.
Edward's affair with an American divorcée led to grave concern! The prospect of having an American divorcée with a questionable past having such sway over the heir led to anxiety among government and establishment figures! Edward V111's unorthodox approach to his role was not appreciated! Gossip about his affair was widespread in the United States, the British media kept voluntarily silent. The British public knew nothing until early December.
On 16 November 1936, Edward invited Prime Minister Baldwin to Buckingham Palace and expressed his desire to marry Mrs Simpson. Baldwin replied that his subjects would deem the marriage morally unacceptable, because remarriage after divorce was opposed by the Church of England. The people would not tolerate Simpson as queen. As king, Edward was 'head of the Church'. Clergy expected him to support the Church's teachings. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Cosmo Gordon Lang, was vocal in insisting that Edward must go. Edward informed Baldwin that he would abdicate if he could not marry Simpson. This he did on on 10 December 1936.

We came to Canterbury almost 15 years ago having purchased the property as a family retreat and second home. Our sons attended high school and college in New England. We wanted a gathering place Surrounded by nature and history . Not to mention they wanted a pond on which to play hockey. For 25 years we had spent our years in city life and now needed a complete change. In 2006, we retired here to our 1760 antique, center hall colonial to relish all that nature and the community had to offer. Not to mention we are located just 1.5 miles from the Town Center with its lovely white clapboard civic building, library, general store, bandstand, church, post office, parish and town halls. The general store is a cooperative owned by the townspeople where one can get just about anything from Worms for fishing to kebabs for grilling, and, of course, the latest happenings around town.
Our community of Canterbury is probably best known for the Shaker religious sect that settled in the town in the 1700’s. There is a wonderful museum, Canterbury Shaker Village, not far from our home that offers tours of the 25 remaining buildings, demonstrations, a culinary school and has a wonderful seasonal restaurant that serves dinner a 3 nights a week.
In the late 1700’s our home was one of the town taverns. Built along the Concord Coach Trail, travelers would stop in for food and drink—even lodging—bringing the news from afar. The space we now use as the library was added to the house in the 1950’s. After one of the churches in town has burned down, the family who owned the house built an additional 700 sq. ft. wing onto the house with the idea that church meetings could be held in the space while the new church was built. That wing was also used for the elder family members as living space and has a full bath and a private entrance with its own driveway and access to the patio. It is really flexible space.
Our home was once farmland to dairy cows, having been settled by one of the original ten families of Canterbury. The family plots lie high on a hill overlooking Kearsage Mountain, Ragged Mountain, and Pats Peak in the small, serene, cemetery located in the rear of the property.
There the town Cemetery Committee places a flag every Memorial Day on the grave of a Revolutionary Soldier buried there.
In addition to the Cemetery Committee, we have numerous active groups which meet-The Historic Society, Friends of the Library, Knitting Club, Book Club, Grouchy Old Mens' Book Club, Scrabble, Yoga, and on and on. The largest, most well known activity, The Canterbury Fair, is always held the last Saturday in July and just about everyone in our town of 2200 participates or visits whether its the Fried Chicken stand, face painting, Kids Games or the History Exhibit.
Communication here is simple but growing. The church publishes and sends every resident a Newsletter filled with local information as well as social news. We are now creating an email group for the residents to more efficiently communicate. Then there is always the General Store and The Recycling Center (better known as the Dump) to receive the timeliest of information.
Accessibility was important to us with three sons in the area schools. We have a Blue Ribbon Elementary School in Canterbury, where monthly classes visit the One Room School House renovated by the Historic Society. There are several public, private, prep, and boarding schools within a 15 minute drive. The capital of New Hampshire, Concord, is just 15 minutes away, the mountains and lakes for skiing and boating are just 30 minutes, the seacoast is 50 minutes, and Boston 1 hr and 15 minutes. And lets not forget Golf - 1 mile from the house!!
Since this home is perfect for entertaining, some of our fondest memories of this home are centered around entertaining and the holidays. To improve the flow of the first floor, we moved or added doors and walls to create a sense of openness and ease. We’ve annually hosted the boys hockey teams for meals in the Kitchen/Great room. Thirty hungry boys would arrive on the hockey bus, deposit, coats, hats, mittens, and shoes and stand around the wood burning stove for little pigs in a blanket appetizers and then proceed around the kitchen island for spaghetti dinner. And we’ve hosted graduation parties here for over 50 people.

The Queen's hand pictured purple sparking concern worldwide
THE Queen has sparked concern after being pictured with a purple hand in an official photograph.
The 92-year-old monarch yesterday hosted King Abdullah, Queen Rania and Crown Prince Hussein of Jordan at Buckingham Palace, and was seen smiling cheerfully for the snap in a ivory white, three-quarter sleeved dress.
But sharp-eyed royal fans were concerned to see Her Majesty's left hand was a dark purple colour as she co-hosted the event with her daughter, Princess Anne.
Tracy Edgar tweeted: I'm concerned. Why does she have such a terrible bruise on her left hand? Did I miss something? But as always, she looks stunning!
However, Catherine Longstaff suggested this was a normal bruise, writing: The lady is 92. At that age any little knock unfortunately turns into what can look severe bruises. The Queen is rather fab though isn't she?

Important Magna Carta and Salisbury Cathedral
Salisbury Cathedral, formally known as the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary is an Anglican Cathedral in Salisbury, England. The Cathedral is regarded as one of the leading examples of Early English architecture. It took 38 years to complete build from 1220- 1258.
Magna Carta Libertatum ( Medieval Latin for the Great Charter of the Liberties) commonly called Magna Carta ( Great charter) is a charter of rights agreed to by King John of England at Runnymede, near Windsor, on 15 June 1215.First drafted by the Archbishop of Canterbury to make peace between the unpopular King and a group of rebel barons, it promised the protection of church rights, protection for the barons from illegal imprisonment, access to swift justice, and limitations on feudal payments to the Crown, to be implemented through a council of 25 barons. Neither side stood behind their commitments, and the charter was annulled by Pope Innocent III, leading to the First Barons' War.
