BELL ISLAND, My Hometown
Bell Island was a thriving mining town but when the mines closed in 1965 there was a mass exodus as people moved all over Canada and the USA to find employment. There are many holes where homes used to be and there were many broken hearted Bell Islanders who felt what this singer expresses. The Bell Islanders who remained have struggled to keep the island alive and I visit as often as I can. These pictures are all taken on Bell Island or of Bell Island while waiting in Portugal Cove for the ferry to take me to the island. The town of Bell Island is called Wabana, A part of my heart is buried within the iron ore rocks of Bell Island.

All Aboard the Beaumont Hamel - Bell Island Ferry Ride June 2015
A ride back in June 2015 onboard the MV Beaumont Hamel across the tickle from Portugal Cove to Bell Island. Also includes some photos of the Light House on the east side of Bell Island.
The Beaumont Hamel is the second Bell Island ferry that runs alongside the MV Flanders. It was launched in 1985 originally for the Fogo-Change Islands ferry run. It can carry 33 cars and 104 passengers. It is an enclosed type ro-ro ferry where the nose opens and closes to expose the front bridge. It will soon be replaced in 2016 with the new MV Legioneer ferry. It is powered by two Caterpillar 3512 V-12 diesel electric generators.
It is actually a pretty famous little ferry. Besides the numerous news articles about it being out of service for breaking down (lol), it can be seen in the movie The Shipping News with Kevin Spacey and it is featured in an episode of Mighty Ships on Discovery Channel on the episode with the CCGS Henry Larsen.

Ride on the MV Legionnaire, Bell Island's new ferry! (Also a bit of urbex on B.I.)
On August 3rd, my friend Brent and I visited Bell Island for the day and we took the brand new ferry, the MV Legionnaire. She was built and launched in 2015 by Damen Shipyards and is the sister ship to the MV Veteran, which serves the Fogo/Change Islands run. The Legionnaire entered service on the Portugal Cove/Bell Island run just a couple days before this video was taken.

We also checked out some sites on Bell Island. We visited the graveyard where my nan and pop Murphy are buried, then we visited the big house my mom and the Kelloway family grew up in, and then we visited the big Lighthouse on the Eastern side of the Island. We then stopped into Dicks's Fish and Chips for a bite to eat, and then boarded the Legionnaire again to go back home.
