After our visits to the Bell and Drum towers in Beijing, we reflect on the visit and share tips for your visit
Beijing Bell & Drum Towers
The Drum and Bell towers informed the residents of Beijing of the time of day and night for hundreds of years. They served until 1924.
Beijing Bell and Drum Towers
Beijing Bell and Drum Towers lie to the north of Beijing-south axis line, to be precise, the north of Dianmenwai Avenue. Bell Tower has a 7.02 meters (23 feet) high bell, which is the biggest and heaviest in China. The Drum Tower has one big drum and twenty-four small drums in all. The big drum represent 'a year' while 24 small ones are the symbols of 24 Solar Terms.
In ancient times, bell and drum towers were built for telling the time. The bell and drums in Beijing Bell and Drum Towers has the same function, which helped the locals keep track of the time so that they could live and work regularly.
One can also hire a rickshaw to explore the Hutong near the Bell and Drum Towers.

Magic Drums, Beijing - China Travel Channel
Magic drums in Drum Tower in Beijing are a must for any Beijing visitor. A presentation of the drummers is a special experience, since the loud sounds of the drums shakes you through the core.
In China, Drum Tower and Bell Tower always form a unity and are usually in the middle of town. In ancient China, the day was divided into double-hours and signaled by bells. The drums were beaten as a signal for the changing of the night-watch. In 1924, when the last emperor left the Forbidden City, bell and drum tower had lost the role as official timekeeper.
In addition to the Drum Tower of Xian, the Drum Tower of Beijing (Zhōnglóu - 钟楼) is the most famous. It is 46.7 m high, and dates from 1420. It originally housed 25 drums.
The towers offer a good view of the underlying traditional alleyways, the Hutongs.

If you have never been to a Chinese drum or bell tower then why not spend some time visiting the Beijing drum and bell towers. Fine examples of ancient Chinese architecture, they were used as musical instruments and to tell the time to the Beijing population.

Drum and Bell Towers (鼓楼,钟楼)
Name - Drum and Bell Towers (鼓楼, 钟楼)
Info - Located along the central axis in Beijing, the Drum and Bell Towers are basically the cities oldest clocks. Many years ago, the beating of the drums and the ringing of the bell helped China's great capital city keep track of time. These days the towers are open to the public, and from the top you can get great views of the city as well as a nice history lesson. Just be sure you time your visit in accordance with one of the daily drum performances.

BEIJING TOUR | Shichahai, Drum Tower and Bell Tower | Tourist Attractions in China
This video was taken during the National Day of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the PRC. Let's visit the Bell Tower, Drum Tower and Shichahai Scenic Area, which represent the characteristics of the old Beijing. Please experience the quiet and peaceful daytime and the singing and dancing of the night. Shichahai is a must-see for foreign tourists to Beijing. It not only exudes the strongest old Beijing Hutong culture, but also the birthplace of Beijing rock music.

China Vlog: We Go Exploring in Beijing (Drum and Bell Towers & DUMPLINGS) (CC)
On our first day in Beijing, we found the Drum and Bell Towers, ate dumplings for lunch at a nearby restaurant, and had a lovely time of it. Can't believe we've begun our China adventure!
(Closed Captioned)
The Backdrop: We spent May-July in China (eight weeks in total). For the first month, I co-led a study abroad trip that brought sixteen college students to the Nanjing University of Science and Technology to study beginning Chinese. I also co-taught a Travel Writing class. As part of that trip, we went to Beijing, Nanjing, Suzhou, Shanghai, Yellow Mountain, and Slender West Lake. Once the students left for home, my husband Jesse and I traveled around China for a few more weeks. Our travels brought us to Xi'An, Chengdu, Leshan, Jiuzhaigou, Yangshuo, and Hong Kong. It was a life-changing adventure!
