Come, join us on our weekend trip to Belmeken dam, situated in the Rila Mountains in Bulgaria and the highest reservoir on the Balkan peninsula.
As we were there, we visited Hristo Smirnenski hut, which has a 500 meters long ski slope and astonishing views around it!
We also climbed to Slavov peak, standing 2306m tall.

Там посетихме и хижа Христо Смирненски, която притежава 500 метрова ски писта и уникални гледки!
Също така изкачихме и Славов връх (2306м), което се стори доста удачно по случай рождения ми ден.

Белмекен е язовир, разположен на на 1923 м надморска височина по течението на Сестримска река в Рила планина и е част от каскадата „Белмекен-Сестримо-Чаира“. Той е най-високият язовир с насипна язовирна стена на Балканския полуостров.
Името на язовира означава „Известно място“. Той е най-високопланинското водохранилище в Източна Рила; изграден е на река Крива река.
Изходен пункт за язовира е село Сестримо, както и местността Юндола

he Belmeken (Bulgarian: Белмекен) dam is situated in the Rila Mountains in Bulgaria and is the highest reservoir on the Balkan peninsula. There is a pumped-storage plant the Chaira Hydro Power Plant built between the lake and a lower basin. Part of the water stored in the lake is cycled back and forth through the pumped storage turbines, while the lakes outflow drains through tunnels to the Sestrimo Hydro Power Plant.

We spent a nice Saturday in an awesome guest house, very close to the Kontenski waterfall. The video doesn’t feature the waterfall itself, as it is not a big one and is secluded in a way making it hard to capture with a drone, so I focused on the surroundings. This is the point where literally the tallest mountain on the Balkans begins rising up steeply. Up there are several 2600+ meters peaks, covered in snow, among them Belmeken and Ibar, and a little further Musala, the highest on the Balkans. The Belmeken dam is situated nearby, but due to its height (1923 meters over sea level) we can’t even get a glance of it. Down in the valley lays the village Kostenets and a little further down is the town of Kostenets. We are flying directly over the recreational area, popular with its mineral springs, which made it favorable for the occurrence of several hotels, offering spa and wellness programs. On the video we can see the dilapidated public pool with a jumping tower.
