documenta 14, Learning from Athens, at The Benaki Museum, Athens
documenta 14 enters into a dialogue with four of the museum’s branches: the building complex in Kerameikos, which houses the Islamic art collections; the Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika Gallery; the Mentis Center for the preservation of traditional textile techniques; and the new building on Pireos Street that hosts a major part of the documenta 14 public exhibition. The exhibition halls of the architecturally inward-looking structure evolve around its perimeter, looking through openings to the central courtyard. At the Pireos Annexe, which thus far has been been used to present a diverse program of guest exhibitions, beyond the scope of the Benaki’s permanent collection, there is an opportunity to investigate untold, unfinished, or otherwise overshadowed histories and to take inspiration from novel museologies, such as those put forth by artists themselves.

([OUT] TOPIAS
Performance and public / outdoor Space)
The core of the exhibition presents video projects created in Greece in recent years which attempt an approach of outdoor, public space through performing arts. The movement towards outdoor space is linked to the renegotiation of public space as primarily shared space and is accompanied by an increased interest in the distinct physical features of the surroundings as they contribute structurally to the realization of the performance event.
The exhibition brings forth a dynamic field of contemporary Greek cultural production deeply rooted in the outdoor space performance tradition in Greece, which is simultaneously found into the core of the recent worldwide developments in performance space.
The exhibition presents projects that joined the Hellenic National Participation at the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space 2015 as well as the Dutch National Participation (Best Curatorial Concept Award PQ15). New performance projects created during 2015 – 2016 are also presented while, during the exhibition, there will be held a range of parallel events: live performances, lectures, workshops, masterclasses, video and film screenings and a series of round tables.

ΤΑΣΟΣ ΒΡΕΤΤΟΣ - WOR(TH)SHIP. TASSOS VRETTOS

WOR(TH)SHIP. TASSOS VRETTOS
The photographic ‘fieldwork’ of Tassos Vrettos among the makeshift places of worship of migrants and refugees in and around Athens is presented for the first time at the Benaki Museum Pireos St Annexe. The exhibition «Wor(th)ship» inaugurated on November 19th, 2015, at 21:00, and will be on view from November 20th until January 10th, 2015.
The exhibition and the accompanying publication present a total of 44 of those places of worship in Greater Athens.
The photographer records an invisible network within the city:
basements and rented flats, apartment blocks and garages, playing fields and outdoor public spaces, squares and courtyards, structures made at hoc in temporary or permanent addresses for groups of Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, Spiritualists and Christians of various denominations and multiple ethnic origins (Ethiopian, Afghan, Egyptian, Pakistani, Nigerian, Senegalese, etc.). It is a ‘work in progress’ that began in 2012 with the collaboration of these communities’ members themselves and with the utmost respect for their identities.
