Bender, Transnistria - Soviet Cafe & Bendery Fortress
Welcome to the Priednestrovian Moldavian Republic... known in the West as Transnistria.
Our 1st vlog from this fascinating breakaway state covers Bender, with its Soviet-era bus station cafe, and the 15th century Bendery fortress.
Many people go on a day trip to Transnistria from Chisinau, but we recommend staying a few days and experiencing the sights and memorabilia of the last bastion of the Soviet empire, as there is so much to see and do in this breakaway state!
We planned on staying 3 nights but enjoyed it so much that we stayed 5 nights in total.
Stay tuned for more vlogs from this fascinating place!

Transnistria - Bender Fortress
Bendery is a town in Transnistria, an unrecognized state, a territory of Moldova. Bender fortress was built in 1538 during the rule of the Ottomans

Bendery Fortress, Bendery, Transdniester.
This impressive Ottoman fortress, outside the centre near the Bendery–Tiraspol bridge, was built in the 16th century and saw keen fighting between Turkish and Russian forces before falling to Tsarist Russia permanently in the early 19th century. You can walk along the ramparts taking in the fine views of the Dniester River, have a picnic on the grounds, and visit several museums on-site that document the fort's long and rich history.
For years this was a functioning Russian army base and off limits to the public. With the recent thaw between Chisinau and Tiraspol, the castle complex has been given completely over to tourism.
A new hotel marks the entrance to the complex near the bridge, about a 15-minute walk from the centre of town. From the entrance it's a five-minute walk to the fort past the glistening domes of the restored Alexander Nevsky Church. If arriving by bus from Tiraspol, alight at the first stop after the bridge and backtrack to entrance.

Wedding in Tighina (Bender, Бендеры)
Bender, also known as Tighina (Romanian; Russian: Бендеры, Bendery; Ukrainian: Бендери, Bendery) is a city within the internationally recognized borders of Moldova under de facto control of the unrecognized PMR since 1992.
Located on the right (western) bank of the river Dniester, together with its suburb Proteagailovca, the city forms a municipality, which is separate from Transnistria according to the Moldovan law. Bender is located in the buffer zone established at the end of the 1992 War of Transnistria.
While the Joint Control Commission has overriding powers in the city, Transnistria has de facto administrative control.
First mentioned in 1408 as Тягянякяча (Tyagyanyakyacha) in a document in Old Slavonic, the town was known in the Middle Ages as Tighina in Moldavian sources and Bender in Ottoman sources. The fortress and the city were called Bender for the most part of the time they were a rayah of the Ottomans (1538-1812), and during most of the time they belonged to the Russian Empires (1828-1917). They were known as Tighina in the Principality of Moldavia, in the early part of the Russian Empire period (1812-1828), and during the time the city belonged to Romania (1918-1940).
The city is part of the historical region of Bessarabia. During the Soviet period the city was known in the Moldavian SSR as Бендер (Bender) in Moldovan (Romanian) written then with the Cyrillic alphabet, and as Бендéры (Bendery) in Russian. In the independent Moldova, officially it is known as Bender, but otherwise both names Bender and Tighina are used.
