Tyniec, Poland - Benedictine Abbey
A short drive southwest of Kraków lies the small village of Tyniec, near the Wisła River, which is the longest river in Poland. Within this peaceful town one can find a quiet retreat steeped in history. The Benedictine Abbey was founded by King Casimir the Restorer in 1044, and it remains the oldest monastery in Poland. The Benedictine monks have opened a guest house to the public where one can relax and contemplate this serene life while listening to the Gregorian chants during worships. On site is a restaurant and shop full of quality goods hand crafted by the Benedictines. It's a beautiful experience off the beaten path, especially during the quiet chill of winter.

Zdjęcia i montaż: Piotr Chronowski -
pozdrawiamy

Benedictine Abbey in Tyniec
While being in Tyniec do not miss historical museum, which features the Romanesque architectural remains of the medieval Abby, artifacts from prehistoric settlements on Tyniec Hill and fascinating information about the Benedictines and the history of monasticism in Europe. The historic objects on display at Tyniec are but fragments of the abbey’s former splendor. The treasures of Tyniec are today scattered in various Polish museums, archives and libraries. The most valuable medieval manuscripts are in the collection of the National Library in Warsaw, including the 11th-century Sacramentary, liturgical books funded by the abbots in the 14th and 15th centuries, and a manuscript containing the works of Joseph Flavius. Most of the books ended up in Tarnow, and are held in the library of the seminary there. The Cathedral Treasury in Tarnow holds the Gothic and Baroque chalices and monstrances, and the silver antependium (altar frontal) is displayed in the Cathedral.

Benedictine monastery - Krakow
Benedictine monastery of banks of the Vistula river.
The Benedictine Abbey in Tyniec (Opactwo Benedyktynów w Tyńcu) SS Peter & Paul Church
#Tyniec is situated on the right bank of the #Vistulariver, in administrative city limit of #Cracow, 12-13 km off the city centre. The picturesque region, hills, forest and the river attracts a number of visitors who wish to relax and get in some fresh air. Nine centuries ago #Benedictines arrived at this place. On the rock by the Vistula river they built a monastery - abbacy, which emerges from the trees and reflects in the river. The geographical location brought significant influence on history. The place required control and sometimes defence because the road was of strategic value. The Vistula river, in its upper reaches, was used to be political border in the Middle Ages, from the first to the third annexation and then during the time of Free City of Cracow.
The church, Abbey, museum and shops all face the central cloister which covers a fairly small area. Partially because of this paucity of space, the Abbey is relatively small and compact, but remarkable nonetheless. Due perhaps to its popularity and the sheer number of visitors wandering about (particularly on warm weather weekends) the abbey is now only available to tourists accompanied by a guide.
The Saints Peter & Paul Church itself is impressive, and does finally remind you that you are visiting a devout monastic order rather than some cheesy tourist-trap. Built, destroyed, and rebuilt throughout a tumultuous history, the church exhibits facets of gothic, baroque and modern style. The current building has been slowly reconstructed since 1947, eight years after the order’s final return to the area. The current form of the church had taken shape by 1968 (when the monastery reclaimed the rank of abbey) although even today there continue to be improvements. If you come in the afternoon you’re likely to hear some of the Latin-language chanting the monks are known to do and you are, of course, welcome to take part in mass should you have the urge. The church is like any other, a holy place of worship, so avoid flash-photography, inappropriate attire, and using your outside voice. The Benedictine monks are quite friendly chaps, but they are still devout men of faith and the church is still their house of worship.
