Benghazi Cathedral is the Catholic cathedral city of Benghazi, Libya. Benghazi area is located behind the city the island's historic Palace Hotel , It is located in front of the field at the time known as the Cathedral Square , In 1962, officially launched on the field name field of Algeria In the eighties dubbed the field of Arab unity.
Ab stone was laid on January 12, 1929 to officially open in December 1939.
Cathedral is the largest area in the north of Africa, and is characterized Dome Panacetin the addition to the Crusaders , During World War II, and the heavy shelling, which involved a damaged cathedral city . Where were bombed in October 1940 by the English Air Force But it was restored at a later period to continue working until it was transferred in 1971 to the headquarters of the Arab Socialist Union . A fire broke out in the year 1976 to close later
كاتدرائية بنغازي هي الكاتدرائية الكاثوليكية بمدينة بنغازي، ليبيا. وتقع بمنطقة بنغازي المدينة خلف فندق قصر الجزيرة التاريخي، ويقع أمامها ميدان عرف وقتها باسم ميدان الكاتدرائية، وفي العام 1962 أطلق على الميدان رسميا اسم ميدان الجزائر، وفي الثمانينيات أطلق عليه اسم ميدان الوحدة العربية.
تم وضع حجر أساسها في 12 يناير 1929 لتفتتح رسمياً في ديسمبر 1939. تعتبر أكبر كاتدرائية مساحةً في شمال أفريقيا، وتتميز بقبتيها النحاسيتين إضافة إلى الصليبين الذين كانا على القبتين.
أثناء الحرب العالمية الثانية والقصف الشديد الذي تعرضت له المدينة تضررت الكاتدرائية حيث تم قصفها في أكتوبر 1940 من قبل سلاح الطيران الإنكليزي لكن تم ترميمها في فترة لاحقة لتظل تعمل حتى تم تحويلها في 1971 إلى مقر للاتحاد الاشتراكي العربي. شب بها حريق في العام 1976 لتغلق لاحقا.

Benghazi or Bengasi (Arabic بنغازي,) transliterated as Binġāzī; Turkish: Bingazi) is the second largest city in Libya and the main city (or capital) of the Cyrenaica region (or ex-Province). The wider metropolitan area (which includes the southern towns of Gimeenis and Suluq) is also a district of Libya. During the Kingdom era of Libya's history, Benghazi enjoyed a sort of joint-capital status (alongside Tripoli), possibly because the King used to reside in the nearby city of Al Bayda' and the Senussis (royal family) in general were associated with Cyrenaica rather than Tripolitania.
Benghazi continues to hold institutions and organizations normally associated with a national capital city. This creates a constant atmosphere of rivalry and sensitivities between Benghazi and Tripoli and by extension between the two regions (Cyrenaica and Tripolitania). The population of the entire district was 500,120 in 1995 (census) and has increased to 670,797 in the 2006 census.

Volunteers and young people are helping with the clean up of Benghazi, as they feel the authorities are not doing enough.
The Benghazi Dak Dhaoui campaign is self funded and calls on people from the city to participate.
STORYLINE
The ruined buildings of Benghazi.
Conflict between the Libyan national army and armed groups raged in the city in 2014.
The fighting took a heavy toll on the city and its infrastructure.
But things are slowly starting to get better thanks to volunteers who are cleaning up public gardens, streets and buildings across the city.
Benghazi's Dak Dhaoui campaign (which means Benghazi your lights are brightening) launched on 22 July 2017 and is still going strong.
According to its organisers, no government authorities have helped them significantly.
However, thanks to the goodwill and hard work of local people progress is now being made to rebuild the city.
Thanks to God, I saw the team work today after we launched the #Benghazi_Dak_Dhaoui. We saw the flow of people and the flow of charities and institutions in Benghazi, we saw the Red Crescent and the Benghazi Club, explains social activist Jamal Al-Misrati who's involved in the campaign.
We love to take people out of the atmosphere of war and to see the beautiful Benghazi return and the return of street lights back again, he adds.
Volunteers, particularly from the city's youth, work in the morning and evening to clean up the city.
Within just few weeks of launching, the campaign had succeeded in cleaning and removing grass, repairing trees, maintaining water lines and lighting, painting the Benghazi Scouts Theatre and maintaining the administrative buildings.
At the same time work began to repair and maintain damaged houses in other recently liberated neighbourhoods.
This campaign is attended by all the people of Benghazi, from institutions, individuals, young people of Benghazi, to the municipalities of Benghazi. From Tibesti hotel, anyone who wants to participate will be welcomed. The campaign doesn't have any specific person's name behind it and it's not under the sponsorship of any particular person, says Mohamed Ajouda, another social activist.
Organisations that have put forward volunteers include the Ahli and Naser sports clubs, the College of Engineering and Information, the College of Literature's English Department, the Boy Scouts and the Red Crescent.
Youssef Al-Obaidi is a volunteer architect and says:
There are families that really need anyone to help them out. We have no problem in helping and we have many young people who can do good and want to do so. They only need someone to organise them or direct them or show them the way they work.
He adds: We do not say that all reconstruction has to be voluntary, but seeing a person in need does make us go volunteering and helping, because life will continue in this way.

Antique architecture under threat in Benghazi

Many ancient buildings in Benghazi are at threat of complete ruin after been ravaged by war in recent years.
Plans are in place for their reconstruction - but archaeology experts are appealing to be involved to maintain the original style and features.
STORY-LINE
They survived world wars - but these formerly grand buildings in Benghazi now lie in ruins after the civil war of the past three years.
In Libya's second largest city, many churches and other buildings were built in the 1920s during the Italian rule of the country. This added a beautiful Italian architectural touch to the coastal city.
However, many of the buildings have been ravaged by war and large parts of them have collapsed.
All the archaeological sites in the city, including the old city, are under the control of the Benghazi Antiquities Authority.
During the clashes and the war that took place in the last three years against Daesh (Islamic State group), 75 percent of these sites were destroyed. We really felt bitter, and we felt that the city has lost more than three quarters of its style, says the Benghazi Antiquities Authority's head, Professor Fathy Al-Sahly.
Fortunately, the municipality of Benghazi has developed a plan for the reconstruction and maintenance of the entire affected area, but this hasn't been implemented yet. The Benghazi Antiquities Authority is currently appealing to be involved:
The marginalisation of the archaeologists and their failure to participate in the construction and reconstruction of Benghazi will result in losing landmarks of the city, will lose the city's style and the city's features, explains Al-Sahly.
For local residents it's important that the restoration work begins as soon as possible:
When we found these buildings burned we regretted our family's memories and our childhood and youth memories. Frankly we are feeling a deep sorrow, and I say that they have to start working immediately, says one local resident, Farag Al-Bakush.
But there's a lot of work required to resurrect the city's architectural gems.

The army says at least 78 of its troops have been killed. Nearly two weeks ago, General Khalifa Haftar declared victory in Benghazi. But the militant resistance is proving tough to beat.
