Each pyramid of Egypt has its own element of mystery and intrigue but the Bent Pyramid is one that certainly captivates the imagination. Situated in the royal necropolis of Dahshur, around 40 km south of Cairo, it was drawn and documented by eminent scholars such as Perring and Petrie, yet the Bent Pyramid still leaves modern researchers scratching their heads as we try to understand the motivation to have a clear and obvious change in architecture.

The Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities inaugurated for the first time since 1965 the Bent Pyramid of the Pharaoh King Sneferu in Giza's Dahshur archaeology area, at an open ceremony on Saturday.
Measuring 101 metres high [328ft], the Bent Pyramid received this name due to the inclination on which it was build. It rises 58 degrees from the desert and its highest piece was built at the shallower angle of 55 degrees.
This pyramid has not only two angles but also two entrances. The first one on the Northern side - that will be officially open for the public for the first time today; and the Western one, explained Khaled El-Enany, Minister of Antiquities.
Footage shows the massive pyramid from the outside and the daunting stairs and the narrow tunnel one has to face in order to see its interior. During the ceremony, mummies buried in sarcophagi and ancient wooden masks found during the excavations were exhibited to visitors.
The Bent Pyramid is one of the five pyramids built under the Old Kingdom Pharaoh Sneferu, around c. 2,600 BC, and retains its original form.
The founding pharaoh of the Fourth Dynasty of Egypt during the Old Kingdom, King Sneferu built three pyramids at the royal necropolis of Dahshur, put on the UNESCO's world heritage list as part of the Memphis necropolis. Legend says Sneferu was buried inside his architectural work.

The Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities Saturday opened the 4,600-year-old Bent Pyramid located about 25 miles south of the capital Cairo, in Dahshur royal necropolis in Giza province to visitors for the first time since 1965, when it was closed for restoration and reparation.

Egypt has opened to visitors the Bent Pyramid built for Pharaoh Sneferu, a 101m structure just south of Cairo that marks a key step in the evolution of pyramid construction. Tourists can clamber down a 79m narrow tunnel from a raised entrance on the pyramid's northern face, to reach two chambers deep inside the 4,600-year-old structure. They can enter an adjoining 18m high side pyramid, possibly for Sneferu's wife Hetepheres, opened for the first time since its excavation in 1956. The Bent Pyramid is one of two built for Fourth Dynasty founding pharaoh Sneferu in Dahshur, at the southern end of the Memphis necropolis that starts at Giza.

In a move that is a part of a wider push to boost tourism, Egypt has opened to visitors the Bent Pyramid near Cairo. The Bent Pyramid at Dahshur was built for pharaoh Snefru about 2,600 BC. The Bent was originally designed as a true pyramid with the steep 54-degree angle.

⮚ The Bent Pyramid was built around 2600 BC at the royal necropolis (ancient cemetery) of Dashur. This archaeological site is approximately 24 miles (40 kilometers) south of Cairo on the west bank of the Nile River.
⮚ This pyramid was built by the Old Kingdom pharaoh Sneferu who reigned over ancient Egypt from 2575 to 2551 BC. He was also responsible for the construction of the famous Red Pyramid and the Medium Pyramid.
⮚ This structure is called the Bent Pyramid because of the change in angle from 54 degrees to 43 degrees approximately half way to its peak.
⮚ The structures original height was 344 feet (105 meters).
Unlike most of the pyramids in Egypt the Bent Pyramids exterior polished limestone casing is still largely intact; making it one of the best preserved pyramids.
⮚ The ancient Egyptians did not call this pyramid the Bent Pyramid; their name for it is subject to translation and was either Sneferu is Shining in the South or The Southern Shining Pyramid.
⮚ This structure was significant in the evolution of pyramid making in ancient Egypt due to the fact it was the first pyramid to have been constructed as a true pyramid, with smooth sides, not a step pyramid.
⮚ There are no drawings or writing anywhere on the pyramid.
Another aspect of this pyramid that makes it unusual, besides its odd shape, is the fact that it has two entrances.
⬥⬥⬥Theories on Why the Bent Pyramid is Bent⬥⬥⬥
⮚ The most widely accepted theory on why the angle of the pyramid was changed was to avoid the structure collapsing. It is believed the builders may have noticed signs of weakness in the structure during construction and altered the angle to avoid its collapse. The fact that the next pyramid project by Sneferu, the Red Pyramid, was built at a shallower angle of 43 degrees seems to support this theory and indicate that the builders learned from their mistake.
⮚ One theory is that the angle of the pyramid was changed to speed up the project. The shallower angle meant less stone was needed to complete the building. Some people have theorized that the pharaoh was aging and feared the pyramid (his tomb) would not be completed before his death. This seems unlikely because Sneferu went on to build the Red Pyramid after the Bent Pyramid; he obviously lived many years after the completion of the Bent Pyramid.
⮚ The least accepted theory is that the bent shape of the pyramid was planned from the start. Perhaps for some unknown religious reason.

Scientists to analyse Egypt’s bent pyramid particles
Scientists will begin analysing subatomic particles, collected from the ancient Bent Pyramid in Dahshur, in Egypt, as they seek to unlock the secrets to the pyramids' construction. Mehdi Tayoubi, President of the Heritage Innovation Preservation Institute said data collected by plates planted inside the pyramid in December is in good order and ready to be analysed. The project, in November announced it had found thermal anomalies in the 4,500-year-old Great Pyramid of Giza.

Two secret chambers have been discovered in Egypt's 4,500-year-old Great Pyramid of Giza .
Researchers confirmed they had found the mysterious cavaties after scanning the centuries old tomb using revolutionary radiography equipment.
The Scan Pyramids project made the latest discovery after being able to demonstrate the efficiency of non-evasive Muons technology at the Bent Pyramid in Dahshour this May.
Last year thermal scanning identified a major anomaly in the Great Pyramid, sparking a debate over whether there was a long-running network of tunnels hidden away inside.
But now the mystery has been answered as the Ministry of Antiquities announced on Thursday that 'two anomalies' were found in the pyramid built under King Khufu.
They are now looking to conduct further tests on the 146m-high monument to determine their function, nature and size.
The pyramid, also known as the Pyramid of Khufu, named after the son of Phara oh Snefru, is considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
It has three known chambers, and like other pyramids in Egypt was intended as a pharaoh's tomb.
Operation Scan Pyramids scientists said: We are now able to confirm the existence of a 'void' hidden behind the north face, that could have the form of at least one corridor going inside the Great Pyramid.
Another 'cavity' was discovered on the pyramid's northeast flank but there is currently no link between the two cavities, according to Mehdi Tayoubi, founder of the Heritage Innovation Preservation Institute (HIP).
He told Seeker : Such void is shaped like a corridor and could go up inside the pyramid.
The international Scan Pyramids team is lead by the Faculty of Engineering at Cairo University, and the Paris-based HIP Institute.
The launched their mission in October last year to search for hidden rooms inside Khufu and its neighbour Khafre in Giza, as well as the Bent and Red pyramids in Dahshur, all south of Cairo.
The project applies a mix of infrared thermography, muon radiography imaging and 3D reconstruction - all of which the researchers say are non-invasive and non-destructive techniques.
Scan Pyramids explained in a statement that muons are similar to X-rays which can penetrate the body and allow bone imaging' and 'can go through hundreds of metres of stone before being absorbed Judiciously placed detectors - for example inside a pyramid, below a potential, unknown chamber - can then record particle tracks and discern cavities from denser regions.
In May scientists from the project released images and details of what they found at the Bent Pyramid, located at the royal necropolis of Dahshur.
They uncovered two entrances, one on the north side and one on the west side.
They open onto two corridors, which in turn lead to a pair of burial chambers, one on top of the other.
It is the the earliest to be built under the Old Kingdom Pharaoh Sneferu and thought to be the first attempt at a smooth sided structure.
It had been thought the body of Pharaoh Sneferu was entombed inside the pyramid.
However the scans scotched that theory - with no suitable chamber found inside the monument.
But Mehdi Tayoubi, president of the Heritage Innovation Preservation Institute, told Discovery: Nevertheless, this is indeed a scientific breakthrough as it validates the muography principle applied to Egyptian pyramids.
It paves the way to new investigations.
