#36 From humble beginnings to Berklee School of Music
We chat with Dirk K. who has recorded over 30 CD's in the course of his career, and worked with such great jazz legends including Randy Brecker, Dave Weckl, Toots Thielemans, Brandon Fields, Peter Erskine, and Rick Braun, just to name a few.
Dirk shares his career insights, from his humble beginnings as a student at Musikhochschule Koeln in Cologne Germany, working his way up thru the ranks at Guitar Institute of Technology in Los Angeles CA, eventually winding up at the Berklee School of Music in Boston MA.
He has toured extensively throughout Europe and the United States, both as a solo artist, and a sideman for other touring acts. Dirk lets us in on what it takes to compose jazz music, and how he continues to be successful at a genre that has been going thru major adjustments at the radio station and record label level over the past decade.

The Four Corners Quartet, Maracaibo composed by Eugene Friesen
The Four Corners Quartet perform Maracaibo by Eugene Friesen, live in the Red Room @ Cafe 939.
Layth Al-Rubaye - Violin
Ellen Melissa Story - Violin
Alliz Nicholas - Viola
Naseem Alatrash - Cello
Challenging cultural difference through music, The Four Corners String Quartet celebrate their own identities whilst exploring each others musical influences. Originating from Jordan, USA, England and Palestine, they converse in middle-eastern, jazz, classical and folk styles. Their signature work Maracaibo composed by the notable cellist and Berklee Professor Eugene Friesen, uses complex rhythms native to traditional Venezuelan music, which acts as the backdrop to virtuoso improvisations and exciting extended techniques.
Formed in 2013 at Berklee College of Music, Layth Al-Rubaye, Ellen Melissa Story, Alliz Nicholas, and Naseem Alatrash represent a new generation of young artists who enrich listeners with unique interpretations and shatter the traditional impression of the string quartet. Based in Boston, USA, the quartet enjoy performing at The Museum of Fine Arts, The Massachusetts State House, Berklee College of Music and for Layth's cat Gordita.
This March The Four Corners will perform Nando Michelin's work Juana de America alongside Argentinian singer Katie Viqueira and a jazz trio. Juana de America: A suite of poems by Juana de Ibarbourou, set to voice and music composed by Nando Michelin.

Yanina perform @ Berklee College Restaurant B3, Boston, MA
Thursday / March 1, 2018 / 6:30 p.m.Add to Calendar
B3 Restaurant
160 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston, MA, 02115, United States (view map)
Yanina is a sultry and soulful singer-songwriter and music business major from Cambridge, Massachusetts. Her influences include Lauryn Hill, Lalah Hathaway, Esperanza Spalding, Beyoncé, and Lianne La Havas.
She received voice lessons at a young age, encouragement from her parents, inspiration from popular hip-hop music such as Eminem’s “Mockingbird,” and discipline to develop into a well-rounded artist. Yanina, currently working on a yet-to-be-titled EP, blends a powerhouse voice with dancing ability and a striking presence on stage.
Because of the lack of representation in the entertainment industry, Yanina has started an all-women’s artist collective called SheReins. The growing Boston-based collective has performed at multiple venues across Europe. Through this collective and with her original music, Yanina hopes to bring awareness to social and political injustices, and touch upon the truths that many face in life.
Admission: Live music is provided for patrons of the B3 restaurant and bar.

Yanina perform @ Berklee College Restaurant B3, Boston, MA - Killing Me Softly
