The 10 WORST STATES for JOBS
Are ya out of work? If so, you’re in the minority. If you’ve been paying attention, only 3 and a half percent of the population is unemployed right now. That’s the lowest it’s been in the last 50 years.
And there’s plenty of jobs out there, too. Lots of companies can’t hire enough people, especially in blue collar industries like trucking and construction, in technology, and in high level health care.
If you don’t have a job now and you’re looking, it shouldn’t be long until you get one. If you’ve been out of work for a long time, you’re likely lazy. Except for very special circumstances.
So, the economy is booming and companies can’t grow fast enough to keep up with demand. But of course, there’s gonna be some states where the job scene is the worst. Not always terrible, but someone has to finish last right?
10. Oregon
In Oregon, the unemployment rate is currently 4.1% the 12th highest in the nation. But, we factored in more than just the current snapshot of the job situation to cast a wider picture.
We also measured job growth over the past year. There are 12 states with negative job growth right now, and three where job growth is zero. Oregon is one of those three.
So, a 4.1% unemployment rate and zero job growth rate means Oregon’s job quotient is 4.1.
9. West Virginia
No surprises that West Virginia is towards the bottom when it comes to jobs. The Mountain State’s 4.7% unemployment rate is the 5th worst in the country, but West Virginia’s job growth has been steady, growing at .4%, which is actually the 6th highest rate in the US. That gives West Virginia a job quotient score of 4.3.
Now lets compare that to our best state for jobs in the USA, Colorado, which has a 2.7% unemployment rate and a .8% job growth rate for a job quotient of 1.9. The state with the lowest unemployment rate is Vermont, where only 2.2% of the population is out of work.
New Jersey and Alabama are tied with Colorado with the best current job growth rates.
8. Kentucky
Here in Kentucky, the unemployment rate is 4.4% which is the 7th highest rate, and the job growth is -.1%.
-.1% means that there have been a loss of about 18,000 jobs over the last year here.
Like other states, Kentucky’s job gains came in health care, education and manufacturing, and the state saw job losses in mining and logging, as the US is slowly moving towards cleaner energy like natural gas.
7. North Carolina
North Carolina has a 4.1% unemployment rate, which is the 12th worst, but the Tar Heel state saw it’s job sector shrink by .4%, which is the 3rd highest rate of job losses in the nation.
6. Michigan
In Michigan, the numbers are very similar to those in North Carolina. A 4.2% unemployment rate and a -.3% job growth rate, resulting in a job quotient of 4.5.
Michigan has lost 6,000 jobs in manufacturing. Some people have said that a trade war with China is part of the problem. Other states like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin have seen similar dips in manufacturing jobs.
Of course, the auto industry is a big deal in Michigan. But slowing sales and rising inventories are leading to slight production cuts and job losses. Basically, people are buying less cars lately.
5. Washington
In Washington, the unemployment rate is 4.6%, the 6th highest in the nation. And the job rate has shrunk by -.2% in the last year.
The state of Washington saw a net loss of 1,600 jobs in the last reporting month. The largest job growth was in retail, technology and construction. Manufacturing jobs are down here, too, but unlike other states we’ve seen, Washington lost jobs in education and healthcare.
4. Arizona
Here in the state of Arizona, the unemployment rate is really low at 4.9%, but the job growth rate is climbing. Over the last year, Arizona did add a net 27,000 jobs, which is about average.
3. New Mexico
Here in New Mexico, the unemployment rate is tied with Arizona at 4.9%. However, unlike Arizona, which is making strides, New Mexico’s job growth rate was essentially zero.
So that means 1 in 20 people is out of work, and will likely remain out of work for the foreseeable future.
2. Alaska
Next up is Alaska, which has the nation’s highest unemployment rate at 6.2%. That’s almost twice the national average.
There are a few reasons for Alaska’s high jobless rate. Alaska has a lot of seasonal jobs that only happen in the summer. This includes tourism, commercial fishing, and firefighting.
However, on the bright side, the job growth rate here is .3%, so that’s promising.
1. Mississippi
Here in the Magnolia State, the unemployment rate is a little better than Alaska, at 5.5%. However, Mississippi has seen a -.5% job decline in the last year, the worst in the nation.

The 10 GAYEST CITIES in AMERICA
What percentage of the American population do you think is gay?
Now when experts ASKED Americans what percentage of Americans are gay, the results were perplexing. The latest poll indicates that we think many many many more of us are gay than actually are gay. Americans estimate that 30% of women are gay and 17% of men are gay.
That’s really high. The actual estimated gay population in America is 4.1%, which is up from 3.5% just 8 years ago.
10. Miami, Florida 4.2% gay
Now, let’s compare Miami to our least gay large metro in America, Birmingham Alabama, which has an estimated 2.6% of adults who identify as LGBT. That’s only a 1.6% difference, which might be a little surprising.
Of course, if you’re going to measure the city with the actual largest gay population, it would be New York City, which has an estimated 272,000 gay residents. But as a percentage of the city’s population, New York City ranks 17th overall.
9. Denver, Colorado 4.6 % gay
In 2016, 63% of youth were comfortable interacting with the gay population. A year later, that number was 53% and now, it’s less than half. The only age group that has a growing acceptance of the gay community are the elderly.
8. Los Angeles, California 4.6% gay
There’s entire websites devoted to the gay lifestyle in LA. Of course, west LA, Hollywood, Brentwood and the surrounding communities are very much gay friendly places. California is one of the main destinations for the gay community in the US.
However, according to polls, a city’s gay-friendly climate isn’t necessarily the main draw for gays. Only 12% of LGBT adults took into consideration how gay friendly a city is when deciding to move there.
7 Salt Lake City, Utah 4.7% gay
Salt Lake City, Utah has two gay city councilors, a lesbian mayor and a pride festival that hosts more than 40,000 participants every year. And Salt Lake also has an LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce, too.
6. Boston, Massachusetts 4.8% gay
If you look at a map, Massachusetts has a high gay population, like several other areas in the New England area. Maine, Vermont and New York all have high gay populations, too. Connecticut, however, remains very traditional. Interesting.
5. Seattle, Washington, 5% gay
Seattle Washington is unsurprisingly one of the gayest cities in the nation. Here, the gay population is 5% and also growing. Seattle passed San Francisco for the most households composed of gay or lesbian couples at 2.6% - and is the only U.S. city with more than 1% of households being lesbian couples.
4. New Orleans, Louisiana 5.1% gay
New Orleans is home to Halloween New Orleans, a three-day festival that’s a major draw for the LGBT community. This is home to the Gay Easter Parade and, of course, Mardi Gras, the over-the-top parade that’s a must-see no matter your sexual orientation.
3. Austin, Texas 5.4% gay
So many gay Americans are moving here that there’s a website called Gay in Austin which features things to do, meetups and advice on where to live.
Austin also boasts the Austin Gay & Lesbian International Film Festival as well as a gay and lesbian chamber of commerce
2. Portland, Oregon 5.5% gay
Portland elected its first gay mayor in 2008. An out bisexual Portlander is Oregon’s governor; an out Portland lesbian is the state’s Speaker of the House. Rainbow flags fly everywhere.
1. San Francisco, California 6.2% gay
It’s probably no surprise that San Francisco ranks as the gayest city in America. Here, 6.2% of residents are gay, and about 1.5% of the total population is in same-sex marriages. San Francisco is a non-discrimination haven. Equality and fairness rule the day here.

18 Creative Sculptures from Around the World

8. Man Hanging Out-- Czech Republic
Do you recognize this statue? Psychology buffs just might: it’s Sigmund Freud, the famous psychoanalyst. Artist David Cerny created the sculpture in 1996 and it’s been around the world ever since, enjoying exhibitions in London, Berlin, Chicago, and even Grand Rapids, Michigan. At nearly 7-feet tall, the statue is so lifelike that it has caused alarm more than once for passersby in the historic Old Town neighborhood.
7. Diminish and Ascend-- Australia
Each year in Sydney, Australia on Bondi beach is Sculpture by the Sea, the largest annual sculpture exhibition in the world. In 2013, David McCracken submitted his piece Diminish and Ascend, which became a quick favorite among attendees. It is made out of aluminum and works on perspective to create a stairway to Heaven. The illusion is created because the aluminum steps become smaller as the staircase ascends. When viewed from the right angle, however, it seems like you might be able to take these steps into the sky.
6. Metalmorphosis-- North Carolina, US
This sculpture is a triumph of both art and engineering. Created by Prague-born artist David Cerny, responsible for Man Hanging Out also on this list, Metalmorphosis is his first installation in the United states. This jaw-dropping piece is crafted from 14 tons of stainless steel and stands 25 feet tall. Each layer of the face moves independently from one another, so the face is constantly changing, programmed by unique computer codes controlled by Cerny himself. And don’t worry, if you can’t make it to North Carolina, there is a constant live-stream of the moving statue that can be found on Cerny’s website.
5. The Bather-- Germany
So, we all get annoyed with commercials or ads when we’re trying to listen to music, even billboards sometimes get in the way, but one English cosmetics company took advertisement to a whole new level of crazy. In 2011, Soap & Glory, based in the UK, employed German sculptor Oliver Voss to create “The Bather.” She was placed in Hamburg’s Inner Alster Lake, stretches over 67 feet long and rises 13 feet out of the water. Unfortunately, her bath was short-lived: she was taken out of the water after just 10 days.
4. The Awakening-- Maryland, United States
It is the sheer size and expressiveness of this sculpture that brings it to our list of the most incredible pieces from around the world. The Awakening by J. Seward Johnson Jr., was first installed in 1980 at Hains Point in Washington, D.C where it stayed for 27 years. In 2007, it was purchased for $750,000 and moved to Maryland. The statue is of a giant struggling to break free from the earth but is actually five separate aluminum pieces. The Awakening spans over 70 feet on a beach in National Harbor built specifically to showcase the giant.
3. Cloud Gate-- Illinois, United States
Cloud Gate is one of the most recognizable sights in the United states. It was designed by Anish Kapoor, who claims liquid mercury as his inspiration, to be the focal point of Millennium Park in Chicago. Cloud Gate, also known as The Bean by locals, was crafted from 168 stainless steel panels that have been polished to seamless perfection. The mirror-like exterior reflects the Chicago skyline and distorts it, making the city itself into a work of art. But because of its smooth, mirror surface you can see tourists and locals alike using it as the ultimate selfie opportunity.
2. The Giant Tap-- Switzerland
This gravity-defying sculpture is located in Winterthur, Switzerland in Techno Park and is actually one of many floating faucets around the world. Others can be found in Spain, Belgium, Wisconsin, Canada, and England. The artist is unknown, but this incredible art piece has drawn visitors from all over the world. It is suspended above the ground and endlessly pours water into the fountain below. If it isn’t magic, can you figure out how it works?
1. Horizons-- New Zealand
This incredible piece will definitely make you do a double-take. At first glance, it appears to be a cartoon tissue drawn on the sky, about to settle on a hill in the Gibbs Farm sculpture park. In fact, this installation is one by Neil Dawson, who is known for his eye-catching designs that work with perspective to turn the world into an optical illusion. Incredibly, no matter where you’re standing in the park, Horizons will always look like a floating tissue from any angle.

Chicago (Illinois) - In Another Minute (Week 237)
--- ---
I've been fond of Chicago, Illinois, for a long time. One of my dearest friends from the film school days, Nick Rufca, is from around there. In 2011, I was invited to screen the Moving Postcard web series as part of a group art show at the S3 Gallery. (You can watch a 1-minute video about that experience: Scott and I spent a lovely weekend there in 2006, after filming in Illinois for our documentary All God's Children ( But the trip this week is what will seal this city in my heart forever as one of my very special happy places.
My father, Günter Westphal, a social artist and photographer from Hamburg, Germany, was nominated and then selected for a month-long art residency; and I got to join him for his first few days in the Windy City. It was absolutely amazing!
Sharing one of my favorite activities (exploring a new place with my camera and someone I love) with my dad brought me ultimate and long-lasting happiness. As neither of us could stop gushing about all that we saw and pointing our camera almost obsessively (and often at the same subjects), I knew more than ever that I'm my father's daughter.
Helping him navigate the city and American culture and language, I felt so grateful for the privilege of supporting my awesome dad. Tagging along to events where we met other fascinating artists, people from the Goethe Institute and even the German consul to 13 US states, I was overwhelmed with pride of my dad and his curiosity, thoughtfulness, social and creative work and his courage.
On a side note, I also was delirious with the buzz of being back in a real city - with all its inspiration, energy, interesting people and conversations and the opportunity to shoot lots and lots of photos and videos.
If you're in Chicago, my father will give a presentation about his social art work on Saturday, November 22, at 5pm at the Experimental Station (6100 South Blackstone Ave - Scott and I will be there as well... and maybe even Whiskey...
In this video, you can see the West Loop neighborhood, where my dad is staying, some street art, the L train looping through downtown Chicago (Loop neighborhood), my dad posing for photos in his Münzviertel shirt (the Hamburg neighborhood where he does most of his social art work) at the Randolph/Wabash train station, the Cloud Gate (if you look closely, you can see us hugging in the reflection) and a few more shots from that corner of Chicago.
Special thanks to Rebecca Beechy, a social and visual artist in Chicago, who was one of the two artists chosen for the Hamburg portion of the Chicago-Hamburg artist exchange last year, and who has been such a great host to both my dad and myself.

Neo-Nazis Rally in Chicago in 1978
WARNING: This video features confrontations with hate groups and includes racist slurs and imagery.
On July 9, 1978, Chicago neo-Nazis organized a rally in the southwest neighborhood of Marquette Park where their headquarters were located.
This video is part of a larger project, The Nazi’s Neighborhood, presented by WBEZ’s Curious City. You can view the project in it’s entirety here (LINK). It tells the story of the neo-Nazi’s 1970s headquarters in Chicago’s Marquette Park. The story is eerily relevant to current conversations about free speech, violent confrontation, and the relationship between hate groups and mainstream white communities.
