As part of my keynote for their State of the Forest members event I sang John Gorka's song Branching Out in honor of the trees! I love to sing this song and ask everybody to reach their arms in the air like trees.

Internationally renowned Danish artist Thomas Dambo created three Forest Giants – larger than life sculptures made from recycled and repurposed materials which otherwise would be thrown away. These whimsical creations demonstrate that trash and waste can be valuable resources, and he hopes they will inspire people to not only recycle, but to also think more deeply about the impact that our lifestyle choices have on the planet.
The three Forest Giants are a family of a mother Loumari, son Nis, and daughter Elina.

History
Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest is a living legacy of philanthropist and visionary, Isaac W. Bernheim. Born in Schmieheim, Germany on November 4, 1848, Isaac W. Bernheim immigrated to the United States in March, 1867 at the age of eighteen with only $4 in his pocket. After struggling for several years to make a living as a peddler in New York, eastern Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, he moved to Kentucky and went into the distilling business. Over the years he achieved great success with his Bernheim Brothers Distilling Company and his popular brand of bourbon, I. W. Harper.
Mr. Bernheim was grateful to the people of Kentucky for allowing him the opportunity to be successful, and he made many contributions throughout the community. His love of sculpture was manifest in several gifts to the public, including the statue of Abraham Lincoln at the Louisville Free Public Library and the statue of Thomas Jefferson in front of the Jefferson County Courthouse. He also donated the statues of Henry Clay and Ephraim McDowell which stand in the Statuary Hall in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, D.C., representing Kentucky.
In 1929, Mr. Bernheim bought and endowed the land that would become Bernheim Forest, now over 16,000 acres. He dedicated this land as a gift to the people of his new homeland. Mr. Bernheim wanted to provide a place for the renewal and restoration of the bond between people and nature. His vision included the combination of an arboretum and natural forested areas infused with the arts, to create a unique site to experience nature. To make his vision a reality was not easy. Due to the land's previous use by the sale and iron ore industries, the landscape at the time of his purchase was heavily abused and nearly devoid of trees.
Between 1929 and 1950, workers prepared the land for its donor's intentions. As a testament to Isaac W. Bernheim's vision and perseverance, Bernheim today is home to a nationally-renowned 600-acre arboretum with over 8,000 varieties of documented trees, shrubs and herbaceous perennials in the arboretum, including the celebrated Hubbuch Holly Collection with over 300 specimens.
In 1931, the Frederick Law Olmsted firm of Brookline, Massachusetts began work on a major site plan for the landscape arboretum. They created an original landscape design that was adopted by the Board of Trustees in 1935.
Following the Olmsted plan, workers built three small lakes and a road through the arboretum before any of the collections were planted. The entrance road began at State Highway 245 and led to the fire tower, a distance of 3.1 miles. Originally dirt, it was blacktopped in 1948 in preparation for the public's arrival. Bernheim’s roads now cover eleven miles. Cedar and Holly pond, as well as Mac's Lake were created in 1939. Lake Nevin, a 32-acre fishing lake near what is now the main entrance, was impounded in 1949 and named in honor of Mr. Hugh L. Nevin, President of the Board of Trustees for many years. Bernheim opened to the public in July, 1950. Over 250,000 visitors from the U.S. and abroad now visit Bernheim each year.

Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest is a 15,625 acre (57 km²) arboretum, forest, and nature preserve located in Clermont, Kentucky (25 miles south of Louisville, Kentucky, United States).
Bernheim was founded in 1929 by Isaac Wolfe Bernheim, a German immigrant and successful brewer whose whiskey distillery business established the I.W. Harper brand. He purchased the land in 1928 at $1 an acre because most of it had been stripped for mining iron ore. The Frederick Law Olmsted landscape architecture firm started work on designing the park in 1931 and it opened in 1950. Bernheim Forest was given to the people of Kentucky in trust and is the largest privately owned natural area in the state. Bernheim, his wife, daughter, and son-in-law are buried in the forest.
In 1988, at least one outside consulting firm was engaged and work on a new long-range plan for the forest was begun. One of the directives of the new strategic plan was to make the arboretum a primary focus. In addition, the forest decided to strengthen its research ties with institutions such as the University of Louisville. As a result, Bernheim Forest was renamed Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest. However, most local visitors still refer to the property as Bernheim Forest, and some of the signage located along surrounding roads still refer to the old name. In recent years, Bernheim has developed a strong volunteer program, added frequent public workshops and classes, and successfully hosts several large public events each year. These include the annual ColorFest in October, Bloomfest in May, CONNECT, an evening in August where art, science and nature converge in unexpected and funky ways, and a 5-mile (8 km) run/walk, held in October.
Bernheim Giants
We went looking for giants in the Bernheim Arboretum and we found them, three to be precise. A momma and her two kids, calling the forest their home. The creator of this is a Copenhagen-based artist Thomas Dambo. The giants were made from recycled materials like bourbon barrel staves, scraps from the Louisville Slugger Museum and fallen trees.
These three giants are just a small piece of a larger story. There are other giants scattered all over the globe, like South Korea, the coast of Australia, Europe and more in the United States.
The story of Niss, Elina and Mama Loumari is still being written by Dambo.
This really is a must see.

Bernheim Forest Hike Elm Lick Trail
5 mile hike at Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest -
This is a 14,000 acre research forest and nature preserve in Claremont, KY (about 30 min south of Louisville, KY)
The area has over 35 miles of trails that are accessible for hiking. The trails are split between the open areas of the property and the forest area. I hiked the Elm Lick Trail which is in the forest area. Here is a link to the trail maps:

The Danish artist Thomas Dambo built three wooden giants in Bernheim Forest State Park in Kentucky. They were completed in March 2019 and shall stay there for at least three years.

Hunting for Thomas Dambo Trolls at the Morton Arboretum
Hunting for trolls at Morton Arboretum, located in the Chicago suburb of Lisle, Illinois. Danish artist Thomas Dambo has created these wonderful, larger than life works of art that can be found hiding throughout the arboretum since 2018.
My mom Kristine Rowley is also an expert on trolls and Norwegian mythology and served as my guide on this journey. She gives troll talks and presentations as a hobby throughout the United States, and her newly released children’s book titled Trolls can be purchased at the link below.
