Milwaukee is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin on Lake Michigan's western shore. It's known for its breweries, many of which offer tours chronicling its role in the beer industry. Overlooking the Menomonee River, the Harley-Davidson Museum displays classic motorcycles, including one of Elvis Presley’s. Nearby is the Milwaukee Public Museum, with its large-scale European Village and a recreation of old Milwaukee.
Milwaukee has historically been a major immigrant city. During the early 20th Century, German and Polish immigrants tended to dominate, and the city still strongly identifies with its German and, to a slightly lesser extent, Polish heritage. For part of the early 20th century German was even the main language of the city, and German names are still very common.
Milwaukee is home to some instantly recognized corporations such as Miller Brewing and Harley Davidson. Harley holds an enormous celebration on every fifth anniversary during Labor Day weekend attracting riders (and celebrity riders such as Jay Leno) by the millions to Milwaukee each time. The 115th anniversary was held in 2018.
Here’s the thing about Milwaukee: it’s cool, but for some reason it slips under the radar. The city’s reputation as a working man's town of brewskis, bowling alleys and polka halls still persists. But attractions like the Calatrava-designed art museum, badass Harley-Davidson Museum and stylish eating and shopping enclaves have turned Wisconsin's largest city into an unassumingly groovy place. In summertime, festivals let loose with revelry by the lake almost every weekend. And where else on the planet will you see racing sausages?
Getting around in Milwaukee is easy. Block numbers are consistent across the city, including most of the suburbs, starting roughly where the Milwaukee and Menominee rivers meet. All numbered streets run north-south, increasing in number as you head west from 1st Street. Most named streets go east-west.

Historic Pabst Brewery Bird's Eye View
The view from the 8th Floor of the parking garage gives a good overview of what was the largest brewery in America at one point. A few night times views are mixed in and the Milwaukee skyline isn't too shabby when lit up.

Milwaukee, USA: In Motion!
We spent five days in Milwaukee in May 2016, and were completely (and very pleasantly) surprised by how cool Milwaukee is!
If we had to come up with one word to describe Milwaukee, it'd definitely be entrepreneurial. We met a lot of small business owners who are changing the face of the city, and we also learned about the big Milwaukeean dynasties like Pabst and Miller that built the city in centuries past.

The Milwaukee River and riverfront/riverwalk in downtown -- on weekend evenings, Milwaukeeans jump on their boats and cruise up and down the river. We grabbed a beer at Rock Bottom Brewery and watched it all happen!
A view of downtown Milwaukee as seen from the 6th Street Viaduct. In the bottom left-hand of the shot, you can see the Harley-Davidson Museum, which is a cool thing to do in Milwaukee, even if you don't like motorcycles. We also suggest you stop by the Great Lakes Distillery, for drinks and a tour near the viaduct, and the Iron Horse hotel for food!
The historical-looking building is Milwaukee's City Hall, and the really cool-looking modern building is the Art Gallery.
Around 0:22, you'll see Old World Third Street. It's the historical German area of town, and even today there are many German restaurants and artisan food producers that have been operating in the same spot for more than 100 years! We took a food tour with Milwaukee Food Tours, and learned all about the German influence on Milwaukee.
Milwaukee is synonymous with BEER, and one of the best things to do in Milwaukee is to go on a brewery tour. We went on the Miller tour, which was FREE and included samples. We also went on the Lakefront Brewery Tour - one of the best (and funniest) in the country. The Lakefront tour charges, but is very worthwhile, and includes free samples, a free gift, and some hilarious memories!

The hotel at the end is the Potawatomi Hotel & Casino, where we were hosted. The hotel is quite new, and was built for visitors to the city, and visitors to the casino. It's really well located for visiting the Harley Museum...only a short walk away.

Pabst Climb Ghost Encounter!
A Memorial Day climb at the Old Pabst Brewery located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with my homie.
The brewery was established in 1844. It then shut down in 1996 and an accepted offer was given to Jim Haertel on September 11, 2001. The brewery is presumed to be haunted. Jackson's Blue Ribbon Pub is located in part of the restored brewery today.

Brewhouse Inn & Suites Milwaukee - Hotel Review
The Brewhouse Inn & Suites opened in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2013 after an extensive renovation to the original Pabst Blue Ribbon PBR Brewhouse. After Pabst left Milwaukee in 1995 this building sat empty for many years but now has been turned into a unique 90 room aparthotel in downtown Milwaukee. The also features the refurbished original brewing kettles from the brewery as it's main focal point. If you are a Pabst fan then you have to visit and stay in the Brewhouse Inn & Suites. It is also uniquely located just across the street from the Best Place Pabst house and museum where you can learn about all things Pabst, by the best Pabst souvenirs, drink Pabst and so much more.
The Uptowner Oldest Bar in Milwaukee - History and Tour
The Uptowner Bar in Milwaukee Wisconsin has been slinging drinks since 1884, that's when it was opened by Schlitz to serve its beer. Tied houses like this (saloons built to just serve one beer) were common up til prohibition, and they were certainly common in Milwaukee. The Uptowner is one of the last remaining historic bars left in the city, and the oldest continuous one to boot. Definitely put this place on your list of sights to see when you visit.

The bottle caps are often used in bar games to award free drinks to those with winning hands.
Pabst Blue Ribbon (PBR) is an American brand of beer sold by Pabst Brewing Company, originally established in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1844, but now based in Los Angeles. Pabst Blue Ribbon is contract-brewed in six different breweries around the U.S. in facilities owned by Miller Brewing Company (a few of which were actually Pabst breweries at one time).
Originally called Best Select, and then Pabst Select, the current name came from the blue ribbons that were tied around the bottle neck, a practice that ran from 1882 until 1916.
The company has historically claimed its flagship beer was renamed Pabst Blue Ribbon following its win as America's Best at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. Even though it earned that name, it never actually won a blue ribbon.
Whether the brand actually won an award in 1893 is unclear. Some contemporaneous accounts indicate that many vendors were frustrated by the fair's refusal to award such prizes. One account says that the only prizes awarded by the executive committee were bronze medals, in recognition of some independent and essential excellence in the article displayed, rather than merely to indicate the relative merits of competing exhibits.
Sales of Pabst peaked in 1977, when they reached 18 million barrels; by 2001, the brand's sales were below a million barrels, 90% less than the peak. While there is some disagreement about the origin of Pabst Blue Ribbon, it has been proven by beer historians that it is an American and not a German beer.
The beer experienced a sales revival in the early 2000s after a two decade-long slump, largely due to its increasing popularity among urban hipsters. Although the Pabst website features user-submitted photography, much of which features twenty-something Pabst drinkers dressed in alternative fashions, the company has opted not to fully embrace the countercultural label in its marketing, fearing that doing so could jeopardize the very authenticity that made the brand popular.
Charlie Papazian, president of the Brewers Association, published the following tasting notes for Pabst Blue Ribbon in 2008: A contrasting counterpoint of sharp texture and flowing sweetness is evident at the first sip of this historic brew. A slowly increasing hoppiness adds to the interplay of ingredients, while the texture smooths out by mid-bottle. The clear, pale-gold body is light and fizzy. Medium-bodied Blue Ribbon finishes with a dusting of malts and hops. A satisfying American classic and a Gold Medal winner at the 2006
