Part 1 | Travelling in Myanmar | Bagan & Inle Lake | Prakriti Varshney
I have been wanting to travel to Myanmar since a long while, and finally it happened in Dec 2019.
I will be sharing my experience in parts as it was a 20 day long trip. We started from Kolkata to Yangon by flight, further taking buses to all other places throughout Myanmar.
We visited Bagan and Inle Lake for the first few days. Where we managed Bagan on our own, tour in Inle was organised by Beyond Boundaries
Please watch the video to know all about my experiences.

Rock Musician Struggles to Find Boundaries in Burma
As Burma's long time military dictatorship gradually opens, it is loosening censorship controls over media and the arts. Musicians in Rangoon are excited by their newfound freedom, but remain unsure of the new limits. Danielle Bernstein reports on how a local punk music band is dealing with the changes.

Myanmar
Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written
language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through
audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio
while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using
a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
Myanmar (English pronunciation below; Burmese: [mjəmà]), officially the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and also known as Burma, is a country in Southeast Asia. Myanmar is bordered by India and Bangladesh to its west, Thailand and Laos to its east and China to its north and northeast. To its south, about one third of Myanmar's total perimeter of 5,876 km (3,651 mi) forms an uninterrupted coastline of 1,930 km (1,200 mi) along the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. The country's 2014 census counted the population to be 51 million people. As of 2017, the population is about 54 million. Myanmar is 676,578 square kilometres (261,228 square miles) in size. Its capital city is Naypyidaw, and its largest city and former capital is Yangon (Rangoon). Myanmar has been a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) since 1997.
Early civilisations in Myanmar included the Tibeto-Burman-speaking Pyu city-states in Upper Burma and the Mon kingdoms in Lower Burma. In the 9th century, the Bamar people entered the upper Irrawaddy valley and, following the establishment of the Pagan Kingdom in the 1050s, the Burmese language, culture and Theravada Buddhism slowly became dominant in the country. The Pagan Kingdom fell due to the Mongol invasions and several warring states emerged. In the 16th century, reunified by the Taungoo dynasty, the country was for a brief period the largest empire in the history of Mainland Southeast Asia. The early 19th century Konbaung dynasty ruled over an area that included modern Myanmar and briefly controlled Manipur and Assam as well. The British took over the administration of Myanmar after three Anglo-Burmese Wars in the 19th century and the country became a British colony. Myanmar was granted independence in 1948, as a democratic nation. Following a coup d'état in 1962, it became a military dictatorship under the Burma Socialist Programme Party.
For most of its independent years, the sovereign state has been engrossed in rampant ethnic strife and its myriad ethnic groups have been involved in one of the world's longest-running ongoing civil wars. During this time, the United Nations and several other organisations have reported consistent and systematic human rights violations in the country. In 2011, the military junta was officially dissolved following a 2010 general election, and a nominally civilian government was installed. This, along with the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and political prisoners, has improved the country's human rights record and foreign relations, and has led to the easing of trade and other economic sanctions. There is, however, continuing criticism of the government's treatment of ethnic minorities, its response to the ethnic insurgency, and religious clashes. In the landmark 2015 election, Aung San Suu Kyi's party won a majority in both houses. However, the Burmese military remains a powerful force in politics.
Myanmar is a country rich in jade and gems, oil, natural gas and other mineral resources. In 2013, its GDP (nominal) stood at US$56.7 billion and its GDP (PPP) at US$221.5 billion. The income gap in Myanmar is among the widest in the world, as a large proportion of the economy is controlled by supporters of the former military government. As of 2016, Myanmar ranks 145 out of 188 countries in human development, according to the Human Development Index.

Burma Pro-Democracy Leader Aung San Suu Kyi Wins Seat in Landmark Vote Part 2 of 2
democracynow.org - After more than 15 years in detention, Burma's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has won a seat in parliament, sparking scenes of jubilation among supporters. Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party had not participated in Burma's politics since 1990, when it won a landslide victory in a general election, but remained unrecognized by the military junta. We speak with Suu Kyi's biographer, Peter Popham, a reporter with The Independent of London, who himself has been deported from Burma, and has met twice with Suu Kyi. It would have been extraordinary if [Suu Kyi] had lost, but winning almost every seat contested is a terrific endorsement of her stand during the campaign and also her incredible persistence and patience over all these years, Popham says. As for the prospect of Suu Kyi mounting a bid for the Burmese presidency, Popham says, I don't think it's beyond the bounds of possibility.

Jailed Activists Largely Left Out of Burma's Latest Prisoner Amnesty
Burma's President Thein Sein has won international praise for recent political reforms and engagement with opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. But the country's traditional prisoner amnesty this week was a disappointment for those hoping for the release of all jailed activists and political dissidents. Danielle Bernstein reports from Rangoon.
Myanmar press still fighting for true freedom
Myanmar has announced an end to direct media censorship but journalists are urging the government to go further to ensure full press freedom. Repressive laws that can be used to target the media are still in place and many fear self-censorship will continue. Duration: 01:54

Cries And Whispers
A couple and their new baby in an old Yangon apartment. A film that deliberately blurs the boundaries between documentary and fiction.
Shan State
Shan State is a state of Myanmar. Shan State borders China to the north, Laos to the east, and Thailand to the south, and five administrative divisions of Burma in the west. Largest of the 14 administrative divisions by land area, Shan State covers 155,800 km², almost a quarter of the total area of Burma. The state gets its name from the Shan people, one of several ethnic groups that inhabit the area. Shan State is largely rural, with only three cities of significant size: Lashio, Kengtung, and the capital, Taunggyi. Taungyyi is 150.7 km north east of the nation's capital Naypyitaw.
Shan State, with many ethnic groups, is home to several armed ethnic armies. While the military government has signed ceasefire agreements with most groups, vast areas of the state, especially those east of the Thanlwin river, remain outside the central government's control, and in recent years have come under heavy ethnic-Chinese economic and political influence. Other areas are under the control of military groups such as the Shan State Army.

Faces of Change: Mueda Nawanat (Thailand)
From our Faces of Change storytelling series:
Stories bridge linguistic and cultural boundaries. They entertain, they educate, and they shape and preserve our cultures and morals. Stories record the most important lessons from our history and illuminate the most promising visions for our future.
Our goal in this series is to amplify stories that are usually silenced, to provide a space for them to be told, heard, and shared, and to generate meaningful and long-lasting dialogue and change.
In this edition of our Faces of Change series, we hear from Mueda Nawanat, who grew on the Thai/Myanmar border. While she herself was born in Thailand, because she is a daughter of refugees from Myanmar, she is considered a “stateless” person.
Because of this, she was denied a scholarship and high school diploma, required for attending university. Mueda became so vocal about life as a stateless student that academics, lawyers, and politicians referred to her experience as a case study in the development of laws for stateless people. Eventually, she helped pass Article 23 in the 2008 Nationality Act, which allows people born in Thailand before 1992 to apply for citizenship. Da officially became a Thai citizen in 2008 because of this.
She was motivated to attend EarthRights School Mekong after witnessing the impacts of unsustainable development in stateless communities. After graduation she created the Mekong Youth Assembly, network of youth groups in the Mekong Region that strengthens communities’ capacity to defend their earth rights.
Mueda believes that: “I don’t fight for myself, but I fight for my family and also my village, so that if I fight, if I win, they also win with me.”

Driving from Zokhawthar (Mizoram) to Rih Dil (Myanmar Border)
Driving towards Rih Dil from Zokhawthar in Mizoram.
Zokhawthar is a village in the Champhai district of Mizoram, India. It is located in the Khawzawl R.D. Block, on the Indo-Burma border, near the Rih Dil lake.
The serene looking lake is a mere 22 km. away from Champhai and is about 3 km. inside Myanmar from the border village of Zokhawthar. In the pre-Christian era,the Mizos and all the cognate groups believed this place to be the passage of souls of the departed ones to their eternal abode,so says the old Mizo folklore.

Dr. Lieberman discusses his film with an audience at Google in Mountain View, CA.
A Hole in the Wall
This documentary speaks about the controversy of the 'Walls', constructed in Santiniketan, West Bengal.
Santiniketan (an abode of peace) a place built by Rabindranath Tagore himself. A place where Tagore's new school movement looked towards the education system with nature (Gurukul) without any walls or boundaries along with the Tribal people who are also part of this Ashram, were nurtured along with the students of this institution. At recent time, the Administration of this institution has lost its sight and has indulged itself in destroying the harmony with its neighbours and constructing barriers for common people and any other human beings to pass through.
This wall is made against the human right violation, cultural and environmental destruction of Santiniketan and disrespecting Rabindranath Tagore's ideologies and vision.
Persona - Shwedagon (Original Mix) [ESM177]
Beatport:
Since his start with us last year, the talented Sydney based producer Persona has been making some leaps and bounds in both recognition and sound, and this new EP is without a doubt a perfect example of just how versatile this upcoming talent can truly be. Each track brings a noticeably different vibe to the release, Shwedagon, which is the first track to this 3 track EP, is a hands in the air peak time powerhouse, pushing the envelope of progressive and laying on some strong 2.0 influences that makes this track a sure fire way to fill the dance floor. The Digital Runner drops back to a more progressive approach, but pushes an infectiously energetic and rolling rhythmic bassline, backed by an incredible sustained lead and warm atmosphere, definitely a stand out track to say the least. Last but not least we have With You, which caters to the more classic and thus far known style of Persona, bringing lush melodies, warm basslines, lovely vocal samples and an overall melodic quality that time and time again reminds us why this artist stood out to us so much last year when we received his first demo. For us this EP is the epiphany of variety and we are so very proud to be showcasing such a masterpiece from this ever so talented artist. Keep your eyes peeled for more from this brilliant Aussie, as Persona is definitely a name that you will see stand out more and more with us here at ESM.
