Bhaja Caves (Bhaje Caves) | An ancient Buddhist Heritage near Lonavala
Bhaja Caves ( Bhaje Caves ) located near Lonavala about 400 feet above Bhaja village is a collection of 22 rock-cut caves dating back to the 2nd century BC.
The Bhaja caves are protected as a Monument of National Importance, by the Archaeological Survey of India.
The most prominent excavation and one of the earliest of the type is its chaityagrha (or Cave XII) which is 26 feet 8 inches wide and 59 feet long, It consists of an apsidal hall with a Stupa.
The chaityagrha has a curved ceiling, shaped like a horseshoe and wooden architecture.
There are a total of fourteen Stupas, which form a notable part of the monument.
These caves have Stone benches, square windows and stone beds inside it.
There is a Shiva linga carved out of stone, in one of the caves.
There are guardian figures of Lord Surya riding a chariot and Lord Indra riding on an elephant on both sides of the door.
There is a waterfall near the last cave.
TO REACH BHAJA CAVES
You can visit Bhaja Caves easily from Pune or Mumbai as trains are available from both places.
Aprrox distance from Lonavala to Bhaja Caves – 15 KM
Aprrox distance from Pune to Bhaja Caves – 79 KM
Aprrox distance from Mumbai to Bhaja Caves – 95 KM
From Pune take the NH4 (old Mumbai-Pune highway) towards Mumbai, few kilometres before Lonavala, you should see an exit on the left towards Bhaja/Malavali and on the Mumbai-Pune expressway take left diversion (from Pune side) at Malavli.
At the top, you need to pay Rs 25 as entry ticket (If you are Indian citizen) and Rs. 250 - 300 for International visitors.
These rates may get revised every couple of year.

There are nearly 22 caves here and there are sculptures related to Buddha on the walls.
Best time of the year is during monsoon.
Once can reach by road or by train. The nearest railway station is Malavali.

The caves are located 400 feet above the Bhaja Village. The Bhaja Caves are on a major trade route of the past that ran from the Arabian Sea eastward into the Deccan region, the division between North India and South India.
This is one of the prominent centers of Hinayana Buddhist sect. The caves have a number of stupas in open space as one of their significant features. These caves are notable for their wooden architecture.

In this 6th episode of Maharashtra melodies, we are covering must-visit places around Lonavala. We started from the Lonavala town towards Karla caves. One thing about tourist destinations around Maharashtra is the exorbitant fees they charge for entry and parking and the poor facility offered for the price they charge. Right after joining Karla caves road you are asked entry fees. Small ghat road to reach Karla caves parking is in bad condition and is often flooded by the pilgrims to visit Ekveera temple situated right next to Karla caves. From Parking it around 500 meters ascend or trek to reach Karla caves. walkway to reach Karla caves/ Ekveera temple is flocked by the small shops of sweets, eatables and pooja items. You need to collect an entry ticket at the counter to enter Karla caves which are 25 Rs/person. To visit just Ekveera temple this is not required. Karla cave complex is a group of 16 caves dating back to the 2nd century BC to 7th century AD. Cave No.8, also called the Great Chaitya cave is the only Chaitya(Prayer hall) among 16 caves This is the largest rock-cut Chaitya in India, measuring 45 m (148 ft) long and up to 14 m (46 ft) high. Lonavala gets its name from Lenavali referring to a series (avali) of resting places in stone(len). By the time we returned, the road to Karla caves/ Ekveera temple got jam-packed And as always, G maps showed us some random adventurous route to reach Bhaja caves. Bhaja Caves or Bhaje caves is a group of 22 rock-cut caves dating back to the 2nd century. One of the caves also houses a group of 14 stupas which are relics of resident monks, who died at Bhaja. Lion's point offers a majestic view of a conical peak (Shiv-ling peak), Shivsagar Lake and many small waterfalls

Hi Frds, This is my 14th Vlog on the ancient monks caves located in Pune district, near Lonavala, Maharashtra. ‘Bhaja Caves or Bhaje caves’ is a group of 22 rock-cut caves dating back to the 2nd century BC. The inscriptions and the cave temple are protected as a Monument of National Importance, by the Archaeological Survey of India. It belongs to the Hinayana Buddhism sect in Maharashtra and the caves have a number of stupas & meditation room/Halls which take you back to the past. There are 2 waterfalls before & after the Bhaje Caves, easily accessible through road.
It’s a very pleasant place to visit with family & Friends for a picnic & get to know our past civilization arts & sculpture.
Nearby Station : Local Station Malavli (Lonavala – Pune Local Train)
Nearby Highway : Mumbai – Pune express Old /New Highway
Local Transport : Private Vehicle/Auto are available at Malavli station

How to Reach :
1. Mumbai People - Take express train from CST/Dadar/Thane to Lonavala (2 hrs.)
From Lonavala to Pune run local train take this to reach Malavli Station, 10 mts from Lonavala & 1 hrs. from Pune.
2. Malavli Station to Bhaje waterfall – 15 mts by walk
3. Bhaje waterfall to Bhaje cave stairs – 1mts by walk
4. Bhaje cave Stairs to Ticket counter – 15 mts. (Rs. 25 per person & for video shooting Rs. 25 additional)
5. Ticket Counter to Bhaje Cave entry gate – 2 mts
Time to cover : Depending on your interest on the caves, scripture it might take 15 mts. to 1 hr to completely explore the area.
Wht to explore : 22 rock-cut caves, Water tank, waterfall, ancient monument scripture, Stupas, carvings of instrument, Surya dev, Indra dev etc.
