Flamingo spotted in Mumbai / Bhandup pumping station
This video provides information on location and direction to one of the birding sites within Mumbai City i.e. Bhandup Pumping Station. Bhandup Sewage Pumping Station is located in the North East part of Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The site is actually a sewage treament plant and sewage pumping station where sewerage and gray water from the mumbai city is treated before being dumped in to the Thane Creek. The proximity to Thane creek, Mangroves and mudflats makes offers a range of habitats that can support many different species of birds.
A Mangrove wetland centre was proposed at this location on the lines of Mai Po Wetland Park located in Hong Kong. The innaugration for this project was done way back in 2008, you can see the inauguration stone in the video, which is still there at the location. Years have passed but the centre which was supposed to be completed by now is stuck in the roadblocks of various approvals and permissions from EIA athotities and government agencies.
This video is not about the Centre but about the fact that such a birding hotspot is located within the Mumbai City Limits. It provides location shown in the Google Map at the begining and the directions to the site in order some one wants to visit the place.

Our bird watching experience at Kandalvan, Nahur was amazing. Summer and winter mornings is the best time to visit Kandalvan. You can see various species of birds, insects and animals, depending on the season and time of your visit.
During rains, it’s a little risky as the place is isolated and the road that connects Kandalvan gets muddy, making it difficult for any person or vehicle to travel. Make sure you go with a bunch of friends to make this journey even more exciting.

Greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) gathering at Bhandup pumping station. Bhandup creek & mangroves around it are their winter habitat in Mumbai, India. They gather here in thousands of number every year during winter season.

Flamingo Safari at Bhandup Pumping Mangroves
Bhandup pumping - A paradise for bird watchers as its called.
I had made a video few months ago but was not able to sight a lot of flamingos so I decided to wait after monsoons.
As it is the end of September, I decided to contact the authorities of Airoli and was provided information that the flamingos were here even in monsoons and can be sighted by a ferry ride, I then contacted Ekvira ferry services( certified by Government of Maharashtra Maritime Board ) who organizes ferry rides to the mangroves from Airoli to Vashi, I spoke to Mr Bharat Khedekar and was informed that there are flamingos in the mangroves and need to book a ferry ride, so I decided to book one , the criteria is that for a ferry booking there should be a minimum of 4 members excluding the guide (ferry sailor) and should be booked a day in advance, as I was solo and a bit disappointed , Mr Bharat Khedekar offered me a solo trip which I am thankful to.
I was informed about the tides as the ferry services depend on hightide, fingers crossed arrived the next morning and enjoyed the boat ride experience like never before the different types of birds and a close view nearly 200 meters across the flamingos and studying their behaviors closely was an amazing and thrilling experience.
