Texas Mountain Trail - Big Bend Ranch State Park 3
Farm to Market 170 is all smooth heavenly pavement along the Rio Grande through the Big Bend's Chihuahuan Desert ecosystem with its mountains, canyons, badlands, and stunted forests, and even grandma's Buick can handle the 17 mile off-road loop through the Valley of the Gods. But if you've got a dual-sport, you're going to be in heaven. Once it reopens you'll be able to ride on a boat over the Rio Grande at the Boquillas Crossing for a short jaunt for lunch on the Mexican side of the border. The Motorcycle is a 1994 Harley Davidson Heritage Softail Nostalgia.

River Road (West Texas)
Though we (my brother, sister in law, and I) were still several miles from the western entrance into the most scenic part of Texas 170 (or as native Texans affectionatly term, The River Road) there was a fiery desert beauty that I'm glad we captured. This is just east of the bordertown Presidio. Nevertheless, in the foreground of the video you get glimpses of the rugged canyon cliffs that border the Rio Grande & Mexico. The River Road heads right into it! The sixty-three miles of 170 between Stude Butte and Presidio brings through the wild gorges of Big Bend Ranch State Park, Lajitas Resort, a ghostly quite ghost town near Terlingua, the Painted Desert, Big Bend National Park, and jus a river's hop away from Mexico!
Every stomach bobbing dip took us closer to where the road shimmied the shores of the international Rio Grande (4th longest River in the U.S.) and then flew hundreds of feet above her waters on cliffs made of ancient volcanic activity. Allgetaways.com says it may well be the most scenic drive in Texas. I've been through forty-eight states and will call this River Road journey one of the most beautiful in the country! Kill Hannah was our soundtrack for this. It rocked.

Terlingua (Ghost Town) is a mining district in southwestern Brewster... more County, Texas, United States. It is located near the Rio Grande and the Texas villages of Lajitas and Study Butte, Texas, as well as the Mexican village of Santa Elena. The discovery of cinnabar, from which the metal mercury is extracted, in the mid-1880s, brought miners to the area, creating a city of 2,000 people. The only remnants of the mining days are a ghost town of the Howard Perry-owned Chisos Mining Company and several nearby capped and abandoned mines, most notably the California Hill, the Rainbow, the 248 and the Study Butte mines. BIG BEND, LIFE ON THE EDGE
There is a place in Far West Texas where night skies are dark as coal and rivers carve temple-like canyons in ancient limestone. Here, at the end of the road, hundreds of bird species take refuge in a solitary mountain range surrounded by weather-beaten desert. Tenacious cactus bloom in the sublime southwestern sun, and the diversity of species is the best in the country. We’ve dedicated an entire show to one topic; Big Bend National Park.
The folks at Big Bend National Park, the National Park Service, and Great Divide Pictures were kind enough to let us share their film with you. Funding for this film was made possible by the Friends of Big Bend National Park and the National Park Service, through gifts from the Amon Carter Foundation, holders of the Big Bend License Plate, the Centennial Fund and other donors.
