Big Cat Rescue is an animal sanctuary in Tampa, Florida devoted to rescuing wild cats, as well as sheltering animals unfit to return to the wild. It is home to more than 100 wild cats. The sanctuary is located on 55 acres in Citrus Park, Florida. It receives approximately 25,000 visitors per year. Big Cat Rescue began operating in 1992, and bills itself as the largest accredited sanctuary in the world dedicated entirely to abused and abandoned big cats. It is a registered 501(c) nonprofit, accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries and a member of the World Society for Protection of Animals. The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries is supported by The Humane Society of the United States, and PETA.

39 Tigers: The story of the largest tiger rescue in US history.
39 Tigers — a documentary by William Nimmo, founder of Tigers in America.
In April of 2003, government officials executed a search warrant on a pseudo-sanctuary operated under the name Colton Tiger Rescue in Colton, California. During their search of the owner's residence, they discovered 90 dead tiger carcasses, including 58 baby tigers dead in a freezer. Thirteen other cats were barely alive. The State of California seized control of Colton Tiger Rescue. Criminal charges were brought against the owner.
Homes were found for the healthiest big cats; 39 tigers remained.
The Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) agreed to take the remaining tigers. After enormous volunteer support, rehabilitation and a massive fundraising effort to construct 10 acres of habitat at PAWS' ARK 2000 captive wildlife sanctuary in San Andreas, California, 39 tigers were moved to their new home in what is still considered the largest tiger rescue in US history.

Tigers in America was founded by William Nimmo in 2012 to address the issue of captive-bred tigers in the U.S. by providing financial support for tiger rescues and the true sanctuaries that provide a lifetime home for these cats. Key activities include primary vet care, coordination and transport for abused and abandoned tigers, and the construction of permanent enclosures at the best tiger sanctuaries in America. Their motto is “No tiger will suffer or die in this country because he or she cannot afford to see a doctor or get a ride home.” Mr. Nimmo was formerly a Managing Director at Smith Barney and Senior Vice President at Citigroup. He lives in New York City with his wife Kizmin and their three rescued black cats.

The United States Attorney's Office for the Western District of Oklahoma has announced that Joseph Maldonado-Passage, better known as Joe Exotic, has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for his role in various crimes of animal abuse and attempted murder for hire. Maldonado-Passage is a colorful character who operated the controversial Garold Wayne Exotic Animal Memorial Park in Wynnewood, Oklahoma. That facility was criticized by animal rights activists for breeding large cats and allowing visitors to pet and touch the animals. According to Texas Monthly, Maldonado-Passage was born Joseph Schreibvogel in rural Kansas, the son of farmers. In his youth, the family moved to Texas and Joe pursued a career in law enforcement, being named Sheriff of Eastvale, Texas in 1983. After attempting suicide by driving his police cruiser into a concrete barrier, he moved to Florida and began working in a pet store. That is where he discovered his love for exotic animals. When his brother was hit by a drunk driver and died in 1987, he opened the Exotic Animal Memorial Park. Most of his early exhibits were donations from people who no longer wanted to keep the animals as pets. In 2000, he received his first two tigers, which he named Tess and Tickles and began to breed. As his fame increased, individuals and organizations spoke out against his business practices. Video of employees striking a tiger with a rifle butt led authorities to investigate, but no action was taken. By the mid-2000s, the Exotic Animal Memorial Park held over a thousand animals. Visitors could buy Joe Exotic branded condoms and lotion in the gift shop. In 2013, Maldonado-Passage lost a trademark lawsuit against Big Cat Rescue, a wildlife sanctuary in Tampa, Florida that specializes in felines. A court ruled that he had used logos and images from that organization without their permission and awarded $1 million to the group. That escalated a campaign of harassment Joe Exotic had been conducting against Carole Baskin, the CEO of Big Cat Rescue. Baskin had come onto Maldonado-Passage's radar earlier, when she was quoted in an article decrying the conditions at his zoo, and he retaliated by using her logo to claim that they were sponsoring his traveling animal shows. Prosecutors said that he then paid a man $3,000 to travel to Florida to kill Baskin, with the promise of additional money after the hit was successful. This was not the first time that Joe Exotic had tried to have his rival snuffed. The FBI had also reported that the zookeeper had met with an undercover agent, with whom he discussed killing Baskin. In addition to the attempted murder for hire, Maldonado-Passage was also charged with numerous crimes related to the treatment of the animals in his care. In one case, he allegedly killed five tigers at the park to clear up cage space for other large cats, violating the Endangered Species Act. He was also convicted of violating the Lacey Act, which prohibits falsifying records of

In 1978, the Jackson Family acquired their first lion, Bum, while living in NE Texas. Tanya Jackson Smith, current president of TCWR, was only 8 years old. In 1982, they acquired another lion, named Sheila. Although it wasn't easy taking care of the two lions in their backyard, the Jackson family was successful. Bum and Shelia moved from their home in Hope, Arkansas, to Eureka Springs when the Refuge was first started in 1992. They remained at the Refuge for their entire life. Through Bum and Sheila's demanding backyard presence, the Jackson's met many people who either had, or wanted to have, a big cat as a pet living under their care, at their home.
Twiss CatsKatherine Gordon Twiss, a breeder and black market dealer, showed up on the Jackson's doorstep with 38 big cats crammed into two cattle trailers. She was on the run from the law in Texas and desperately needed to find a home for the cats. A friend of the Jackson family lived on a ranch in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and offered temporary refuge for the cats. Later the property was bought for a permanent home. The 38 big cats were moved to the nearly 500 acre ranch near Eureka Springs, which later became what today is Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge. The labor intensive job of quickly building temporary cages for the 38 big cats was completed. Twiss was impossible to get along with and moved all her 70 cats and 30 horses that she had picked up from around the country and brought them to the refuge. It soon became evident, by incoming phone calls from all over the country from big cat pet owners looking for a home for their cat, that someone needed to start a refuge, or sanctuary. The Jackson family: Don, Hilda, Tanya, and Robert, stepped up to this challenge and did what most would only dream of - sold everything; moved over 300 miles; and humbly went to work for the animals.
Today there are over a dozen reputable sanctuaries for big cats around the country, and Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge truly stands out as a frontrunner. The United States has thousands of its residents keeping dangerous big cats in their backyards, basements, garages, and warehouses. People acquire these animals as pets and soon find they have made a grave decision and turn to Turpentine Creek for refuge..
