Athens Central food market - The liveliest and most colorful market to visit
Just a 15-minute walk from your AthensFlat vacation rental is the Athens’ Central Food Market. The central market is a great place to experience the true spirit of the city. It is one of the liveliest and most colorful markets to visit. Of course, there are many smells and sights that are not for everybody’s taste, but it is an amazing place, surprisingly clean with a huge choice of meat, fish, vegetables, fruits and spices. On their own Facebook, it says, “Food Market: The most complete experience of enjoyment for those who are passionate about the taste.”
In addition to the center of the market, there are some vendors who also sell household items, dry good, dried herbs, and nuts. When you go to the market, make sure to wear shoes as the floor may be a bit slippery, especially in the fish market. Just like in every food market, there is an odd smell. Be prepared for this and other crude things that could affect the experience of the wonderful colors and taste. (Meat market is not recommended for vegans and vegetarians).
Right next to the Market is Stelio’s Taverna. It is One of the most authentic taverns in Athens. Great quality food and extra special service. They know how to take care of customers. Another tavern to visit is Diporto. Diporto is a basement-level taverna (koutouki in Greek) located at the corner of Sokratous and Theatrou Streets in the district of Athens Central Market. Even though the 150 years old building that houses the taverna, which is as building, has two staircases, leading to either street, you would never guess the world of wonders that awaits you at its basement.
Once you have visited the Central Market, come home and try to make your own Greek dish. Open Mon – Sat 07:00 - 18:00

Adress: Athinas 42, Athens 999-20, Greece (Omonia Metro Station or Monastiraki Metro station)
ALTERNATIVE TOURS OF ATHENS
We followed Alternative Tours of Athens in one of their free tours! The experience was enriching and playful, guiding us through urban architecture to highlights of street art (Athens is a street art paradise) and designers’ workshops. A great way to spend Sunday afternoon, learning more about the city and connecting with people that share the same interest on urban culture. In the end of the tour, members of ATA, talked to us about their initiative and what they expect will be the impact of it.

I welcome you to the city of Athens, Greece ladies and gentlemen.
Athens has been inhabited for over 7,000 years! Making this one of the oldest cities in the world!
The winners of the 1896 Olympics were rewarded with silver medals unlike today where you'd go mad if you won The Olympics and someone handed you a SILVER medal
The famous acropolis: Acro means high and polis means city. High city
Athena and Poseidon competed to become the guardian of Athens
Athens is said to be the birthplace of democracy, western philosophy, The Olympics, political science, theater and literature
The people of Athens decided that Athena's (goddess of wisdom) gift of the olive tree made her worthy of the city, the olive tree is now all over Greece not just in Athens.

Athens-Strike
Frankly, this is a great time to travel to Greece. The financial crisis — while making life difficult for most Greeks — is a boon for budget travelers. Hotel prices are down, the normally warm Greek hospitality has ratcheted up a few notches, and roads outside of Athens are essentially traffic-free, as higher gas prices have caused locals to cut down on inessential driving. The downsides (shorter hours at sights, reduced long-distance bus service, occasional strikes) are noticeable, but not reason enough for you to postpone a trip. All the things you're looking for in a trip to Greece — mouthwatering food, deep-blue water, striking scenery, and the thrill of connecting with ancient history — are all here waiting for you...at a cheaper price.
Greece is easy on travelers. Tourism makes up 15 percent of the gross domestic product. The Greeks pride themselves on a concept called filotimo — literally love of honor, but usually meant to connote openness, friendliness, and hospitality. Social faux pas made by unwary foreigners are easily overlooked by Greeks, and many speak English.
Despite the headlines, the major sights of this ancient land are open and relatively crowd-free. Athens, while sprawling and congested, has a compact, pleasant tourist zone capped by the famous Acropolis — the world's top ancient site. With its central location, it's also the perfect launch pad for farther-flung destinations. You can commune with ancient spirits at the center of the world — the oracle near the picturesque mountain hamlet of Delphi. Or travel farther to the Peloponnese, the large peninsula that hangs from the rest of the Greek mainland, and experience a wild, mountainous landscape dotted with the ruins of Mycenaean palaces, ancient temples, frescoed churches, and countless medieval hilltop castles. Most travelers like to take a vacation from their vacation on one of the famous Greek isles, such as traffic-free Hydra, whitewashed Mykonos, or volcanic Santorini.
It all sounds idyllic — and for the most part, it is. On a trip here a few years ago, if it hadn't been for the blaring headlines and shrill news reports calling the demonstrations riots, I probably wouldn't have been aware of them at all — I was too busy pondering the ancients at the Acropolis and nibbling olives at dinner. I found Greece to be the same old wonderful place...with, perhaps, a few more minor headaches.
Political protests are indeed a common occurrence, and not just in Athens. Demonstrating is woven into European democracies. And, while protesting is generally just too much trouble for most Americans, Europeans are quick to hit the streets when they want to raise their collective voice. I think it's healthy. It's my hunch that for many years to come, Europe will be sorting this out, and travelers will encounter parades and rallies in front of parliament buildings — and anarchists wanting to hijack these events to make their points and get on the news. As the TV news media loves vivid footage, this is easy to do. But most rallies involve zero violence. When violence has broken out in Athens, it's been between police and protesters, not bystanders...and certainly not tourists out for a stroll.
It's pretty easy to steer clear of any unrest. Protest rallies are generally scheduled in advance: Your hotelier can tell you if anything's likely to be afoot in a main city square during your visit. Strikes are another nuisance, but generally not prolonged — just a day or two here and there. (Strikes have long been a way of life in Greece; most Greeks see a general strike as an excuse for an impromptu holiday.)
What's the biggest impact of the crisis on visitors? It's the satisfaction you'll get from contributing to the economy of a nation dealing with tough times — and the joy that comes from a tourist industry that really appreciates your presence. Sharing a beer or a coffee with a talkative native can provide you with a lesson in contemporary Greece that's every bit as fascinating as the Classical stuff.
Greece has, it seems, more than its share of troubles right now. Still, Greeks are optimistic by nature. Most believe that they'll get through these tough economic times. They're quick to point out that, regardless of the economy, the olives remain just as tasty, the water just as blue, and the sun — like the Greek people — just as warm.Newspaper

What We Thought of Athens - Our Trip to Greece
In this short video, we travel around Athens Greece with our tour guide, Fotus, from the app With Locals. We see some astonishing monuments of Athens, eat really amazing food (and some not so amazing), and take in the Greek culture. Athens was not on my top 5 places to visit, but I am definitely happy that we took this short trip. Overall, I loved it!

ഗ്രീസ് , അതെൻസ്. Greece and Athens
Greek cuisine is a blend of indigenous traditions and foreign influences. Neighbouring Italy and Turkey have left a major impact on Greek cuisine, and there are shared dishes with both of these nations. The traditional Greek diet is very Mediterranean, espousing vegetables, herbs, and grains native to the Mediterranean biome. Being a highly maritime nation, the Greeks incorporate plenty of seafood into their diet. Greece is also a major producer and consumer of lamb; beef, pork, and especially chicken are also popular. Olive oil is a staple in Greek cooking, and lemon and tomatoes are common ingredients. Bread and wine are always served at the dinner table. The cuisine in Greece can be radically different from what is offered in Greek restaurants around the world. Greek restaurants abroad tend to cater more to customer expectations rather than offer a truly authentic Greek dining experience. One example is the famous gyros (yee-ros), a common item on Greek menus outside Greece. While it is a popular fast-food item in Greece today, it is a relatively recent foreign import (adapted from the Turkish döner kebap) and is considered by Greeks as junk food. It is never served in the home and is generally not found on the menus of non-fast-food restaurants. Greeks live to eat, and eating out is Greece's national pastime and a rewarding experience for visitors; however, not knowing where to go or what to do can dampen the experience. In the past, restaurants that catered mostly to tourists were generally disappointing. Thankfully, the nation's restaurant industry has grown in sophistication over the past decade, and it is now possible to find excellent restaurants in highly-touristed areas, particularly areas that are popular with Greek tourists as well. Thus, it remains a good idea to dine where Greeks dine (Go search them at the times Greeks dine: 21:00-23:00). The best restaurants will offer not only authentic traditional Greek cuisine (along with regional specialities) but Greece's latest culinary trends as well. A good sign of authenticity is when you get a small free dessert when you ask for the bill. Bad signs are when desserts are listed on the menu, large posters depicting food are seen outside or when a waiter is standing outside yelling for clients to come in or taking your plates away while you are still sitting at the table (traditionally everything is left on the table until the customer is gone, even if there is hardly any space left). Restaurants serving international cuisine have also made a presence in the country, offering various options such as Chinese, French, Italian, and international contemporary.
