Got an invite to join my brother-in-law and his mountain biking students for a couple days Oneida, TN. It was pretty wet out and had some rain coming through. Unfortunately, we didn't get to ride the whole trail loop we had scheduled due to time restraints and a broken bike, but still had a good time riding with the students!

Driving through Oneida, Tennessee
Oneida is a town in Scott County, Tennessee, United States.
Oneida is known for its proximity to the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. The town is named for Oneida, New York, the home of several railroad executives who helped develop the town in the late 19th century.

Backpacking and Hammock Camping in Big South Fork Tennessee
After hearing the cold, wet weather forcast for Minister Creek, PA, we decided to head South to Tennessee instead and backpack some of Big South Fork. On This trip Josh Ebersole joined me, aka Subaru Josh, and we planned a two night, three day hike to Honey Creek and Burnt Mill Bridge trails. Both nights we camped right along the beautiful Cumberland River and got to see some amazing sites. Tim Watson was supposed to join us but had to cancel last minute. He did end up making it to Big South Fork, but we were unable to meet up due to poor cell phone reception. Enjoy!
Hiking (& Bushwhacking) to Angel Falls of the Big South Fork National River
Day 4 of Smell N Roses and Caveman Outdoors on the trails at Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area in Scott County, Tennessee. In this hike, we start out at a familiar spot along the Grand Gap Loop Trail and continue for about one mile or so, passing by a great overlook. Then we link up with the John Muir Trail and take it in a southbound direction down into the canyon, passing many awesome rock features and the spectacular Fall Branch along the way. Once we reach the Big South Fork Cumberland River, we wanted to cross the river and use the Angel Falls Trail that runs along the east banks so we could hike down and check out Angel Falls. Since we could not get across the river, we decided to backtrack back to Fall Branch and from there bushwhack just under a mile along the west banks of the river to Angel Falls. We spent some time checking out the awesome area around the rapids, then headed back the way we came and continued southbound on the John Muir Trail, again passing many rock features. We finally make it across the river and back to the Leatherwood Ford Access. This awesome hike was the final hike we took together at the 2015 Meet-up. Thanks for watching!

Hiking Blevins Farm Loop at Big South Fork, Tennessee
My first hike at the 2016 Spring Bushcraft Meet hosted by Bob808Knight, Ken Kramm, and Bill in the Hills at Bandy Creek area of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area in Scott County, Tennessee.
In this short hike, I am joined by my friends Caveman Outdoors, Shane, and Sheba. We hiked out of the Bandy Creek Campground towards the trailhead. The trail is a little over 3 mile loop. In less than 2 miles we arrived to the Oscar Blevins Homestead, a farm dating back to the 1870s. After checking out the farm and preserved structures, we get back on the trail to complete the loop, passing mainly through woods. We crossed the main branch of Bandy Creek and encountered some awesome rock formations typical of the Cumberland Plateau. We also passed by a nice small waterfall on the West Fork Bandy Creek. Finally arriving back at our starting point along this lollipop loop trail. A very interesting trail with a lot of neat things to see. The terrain was mostly easy and the trail well maintained.

Sunset Overlook at Big South Fork, Tennessee
The Sunset Overlook Trail is a very short, 1.3 mile (one way) trail to a nice unprotected rock cliff on the east side of the gorge in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area in Scott County, near Oneida, Tennessee. The trailhead is located along the road that leads to the East Rim Overlook, in the Leatherwood Ford area. There is very little elevation change on the hike, and the trail passes through mainly mixed hardwood forest before a short decent to the top of the rock wall and view of the gorge. The view is partially obstructed by trees but is still a nice view to the north, west, and south. You can see the river and the Leatherwood Road bridge crossing.

On my way to do some backpacking with my friend Caveman Outdoors and to attend a Bushcraft Meet-up, I stopped for a quick view of the East Rim Overlook in the Leatherwood Area of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area in Scott County, Tennessee. From the parking area, its a short 0.1 mile walk down a paved pathway to the observation deck. Excellent views of the canyon and the Big South Fork Cumberland River. Thanks for watching!

Big South Fork park area cabin - 295 John Smith Rd Oneida TN. Big South Fork delight! Wander the woods then indulge yourself in this pretty cabin in scenic equestrian development. Snuggle by the gas log FP on glowing hardwood floors, under the dramatic cathedral ceiling. Escape to the dreamy loft with bath. Comfort reigns with main level MBR and bath, tiled kitchen, dining room, and laundry area. Wonderful, wide covered porch wraps from front to 10'x 24' open back deck overlooking a gorgeously wooded back view. Oversized storage building has room for tack and tools. Ride to end of road and right onto hiking / horse trail -- ride or hike all over the BSF from here. Ten minutes to Oneida, an hour to Oak Ridge & Knoxville, and just five minutes to BSF park headquarters and some of the most scenic river, trail-riding, and hiking areas in the country. The fun of the Smokies without the crowds!

Part one of my trip to Big South Fork National Park in Tennessee. First couple days were a solo hike in the backcountry. Then a couple days with the bushcraft/Youtube meetup. More to come soon.
Hiking Honey Creek Loop Trail at Big South Fork, Tennessee
In this video, I am joined by my friends Caveman Outdoors and Sheba, Shane, and the State Parkers for a spectacular hike on the Honey Creek Loop Trail, located in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area in Scott County, east Tennessee. We were in the area for the 2016 Spring Bushcraft Meet and Caveman and I did not get to this trail last year so it was high on our list of places to get to this year. While not extremely difficult, it is probably one of the most challenging trails in the BSF. There is only one good gorge overlook, but the trail does not disappoint as there are a lot of waterfalls, massive rock features and caves, and a lot of rock scrambling. The main loop trail is just under 6 miles, but it is a longer hike if you complete some of the side trails to overlooks, caves, etc.
Note, if you hike with a dog you likely will not be able to climb the ladders to the overlook. We lost Caveman and Sheba at the ladder, did we ever see them again? Watch the video to find out what happened...

Big South Fork Winter Backpacking 60-mile Loop
A 60-mile winter backpacking trek through Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area in Tennessee. Dates: February 6-9, 2017.
The video features two lightweight backpackers, one with a tarp (me) and one with a hammock (Kevin Ryan, YouTube channel here:
Total trip time: 4 days, 3 nights. Weather conditions: rainy and cold, with a severe thunderstorm followed by light snow on night 3.
The trip was part of my preparation for a thru-hike of the Sheltowee Trace in Kentucky. I outfitted myself with the same equipment I'll take on the thru-hike, with the exception of a heavier cold-weather sleeping bag. My base weight (not including camera equipment, which I wear in a waist-pack in front) was 19 pounds.

Important note about Pickett State Park: The Drop-Off Trail is gone! I have done videos about this trail in the past, e.g., because it is a confusing trail that can be hard to find. We did not find it on this trip, and we took another route to hike from the Rock Creek Loop in Big South Fork to the Hidden Passage Trail in Pickett State Park. I was mystified that we did not see the signs. Since the hike, I have talked with officials both at Pickett State Park and the Tennessee Division of Forestry, who told me that the signs for the Drop-Off Trail, and parts of the trail itself, have been removed. The reasons: the trail was in poor condition and hikers were frequently getting lost. The officials said they did not make any public statement about the removal of the signs, on the Internet or otherwise, because, they said, few people know about the trail. Needless to say, they were not familiar with my YouTube channel!
Bottom line: don't attempt the loop depicted in this video unless you have a reliable GPS-enabled map or someone familiar with the area to guide you. To get from the Rock Creek Loop to the Hidden Passage Trail, Kevin and I took the Rock Creek Trail to the Tunnel Trail to the Hidden Passage Trail. This route, however, cannot be found on any of the maps I'm familiar with. The National Geographic map might show the trails as dark lines, but they are not identified on the map with the trail names that correspond with the actual trails. Even more confusing, the trails themselves are not identified with accurate signage. I knew about this route only from getting lost in the past, then finding my way out. Not a recommended way to hike!
The story of Maude's Crack: I tell this story in the video but I want to give more detail. An old book tells the story this way: Maude's Crack was named after Minnie Maude Roysdon, who used this shortcut to access the top of the cliff from a rockshelter where she and her husband, Isham, lived temporarily after their house burned. Both Isham and Maude are now buried near the top of the bluff at the Terry Cemetery.
