Big South Fork Scenic Railway, Stearns and Barthell Kentucky
Kentucky And Tennessee Railroad short line railroad. We spent two nights in the cabins at Barthell Ky, near Stearns. You will see what it is like to ride the train to Blue Heron and back, including going through a tunnel. While in Blue Heron, you can get off the train and walk on top of the old coal tipple over the river. They blow the air horn when it is time to reboard for the ride back to Stearns. This passenger train has open air cars and a caboose that you can ride in. Locomotive rides are also available. There are hiking trails and awesome cabins that you can stay in. This is a very historic area and this railroad branch line connects into the Norfolk Southern Railroad main line called the Rathole. Filmed June 2, 2013. Please subscribe to my channel! Big South Fork Scenic Railway, K&T, Riding The Train & 2 Camera Coverage!
This is the Big South Fork Scenic Railway at Stearns Ky. Riding a tourist railroad passenger train through a tunnel, a national forest and on a steep railroad grade. Branch line railroad off Norfolk Southern main line. This video shows what its like to ride this historic railroad down to the coal tipple and back. There are also a couple of shots of the train going by and a shot that I took from inside the old EMD SW9 locomotive. We stayed 2 nights in one of the rebuilt company houses in Barthell Kentucky with my wifes sister and our brother in law. At the end of the video we are walking over an abandoned concrete railroad trestle over the Cumberland River at Yamacraw Kentucky. Big South Fork Railway lumber and mine plus Cumberland Falls
Taking a train ride on the big south fork railway in Stearns Ky and visiting the Cumberland falls. The white building in the thumbnail is the former Kentucky and Tennesse Railway steam shop. I also stopped by the Scenic Cumberland falls on the Cumberland river in Ky. It is like a baby Niagra falls. I hope you enjoy the ride and the big EMD power sound!
Riding the Big South Fork Scenic Railway | 8/5/18
On August 5th, 2018, my grandparents, my friend and i rode on the Big South Fork Scenic Railway in Stearns Ky. The train travels on the K&T line (Kentucky & Tennessee) which hauled coal from the early 1900's until 1987. The train goes to and old coal mine. Thanks for watching!
Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area (Kentucky/Tennessee)
Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area preserves the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River and its tributaries in northeastern Tennessee and southeastern Kentucky. In addition, the former mining community of Blue Heron is preserved and interpreted via signage.
The Big South Fork region contains one of the highest concentrations of natural bridges in the eastern United States and the area is located in parts of Scott, Fentress, Pickett, and Morgan counties in Tennessee, and McCreary County in Kentucky. Charit Creek Lodge is a wilderness lodge, accessible by trail, located within the park.

The Big South Fork Scenic Railway in Kentucky
These videos were taken on 10-10-15, showing a short chase that my friend, FanFan61618, did of the Big South Fork Scenic Railway's EMD SW9, KT 106, pulling (and then later shoving) an excursion train over the Kentucky & Tennessee Railway in southeastern Kentucky. FanFan61618 says that the passenger cars on this railroad are rather weird, and also says that they seem to be built out of old freight cars.
In Barthell, KY, the town is a quiet zone. The reason I say quiet zone though is that the railroad will blow the horn upon entering the town, but keep it quiet until they leave the town. However, on one side of the town there's also another crossing that they do blow for.

A trip to historic Stearns, Kentucky this summer. We went to ride the train up to the old mining town of Blue Heron, but found a lot more than coal mining. We were very surprised at the hospitality and good nature of everyone we encountered. This was a fun trip with lots of photo and video ops. Highly recommended.
A Week of Storytelling in the Big South Fork
As summer begins to wind down and we move into the month of September, the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area begins eight days of storytelling.
The first event planned is the Ghost Train scheduled for September 9th down at the Blue Heron Interpretative Site on the Kentucky side of the park.
The storytelling continues throughout the following week as professional storytellers tour schools in Fentress, Morgan, Pickett, and Scott counties in Tennessee and McCreary and Wayne counties in Kentucky to tell tall tales and funny stories.
The culmination of the storytelling events is the 25th annual Storytelling Festival on September 16, 2017. The professionals ply their skills in an afternoon storytelling session that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

The Yamacraw 50k and 10k presented by McCreary Tourism are simultaneous trail races that will be held across Daniel Boone National Forest and Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area in McCreary County, Kentucky on April 18th, 2015.
Runners will be treated to some of the most beautiful trails in the southeast. Both courses offer scenic landmarks throughout the race that include gorge overlooks, stunning rock overhangs, natural arches, waterfalls, and an iconic finish into Blue Heron Mining Community across a 100 foot high pedestrian bridge.

Train Ride Through Daniel Boone National Park and Big South Fork Senic Railway
we took a trip to stearns kentucky and rode a train that ran along the kentucky and tennesse railway. it ran through the stearns mines that shut down in the 60's or 70's. the train was pulled by a single engine called engine 106 and it pulled 6 cars along the way. enjoy the scenes. the black part of the video was when we went through a tunnel along the way.

Really cool video, of big south fork Ky. A coal mining camp in the early 1900's until the 1940's in those days it was owned by the stearns company, this video will show you the same camp that the miners lived in as well as the same railway that they used to get to the mine.
