▶︎ Big Spring State Park + Scenic Overlook
Big Spring State Park is a small park with a big scenic overlook of the town of Big Spring, Texas. There is no fee to enter the park.
This park sits on the top of a small mountain in the middle of the town of Big Spring. If you need food or supplies there are grocery stores in the nearby town of Big Spring. Once you enter the park there are various hiking and biking trails. There are picnic areas and restrooms.
Perhaps the main attraction of this park is the scenic overlook of the town and the surrounding valley. There is a indoor/outdoor building structure that may be reserved for events. Next to the building structure is a playground. Many of the playground structures looked kind of old.
From what I could gather there are plans to renovate the park. There was also a sign that there was no overnight camping at the park. There were spaces that looked like campsites, but overnight camping was not allowed. Much of the infrastructure appeared old and in need of renovation. Hopefully the park will be renovated and open for camping in the future.
Go for the view, but go somewhere else for camping. To the east of Big Springs there are parks with camping at Lake Colorado City State Park and still further east there is Abilene State Park.

Big Spring Nursing Home Under Investigation By the State
A nursing home in Big Spring comes under the state microscope. It all surrounds a complaint that landed the nursing home in non-compliant status. NewsWest 9 has learned that status was just lifted Monday afternoon.
The Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez nursing home is under investigation by the Texas Department of Disability and Aging Services.
The State started the investigation last Wednesday after receiving a complaint about the home that serves veterans.
Upon investigating, state officials placed the nursing home on immediate jeopardy status. This status means there is a situation present that could harm the health or safety of a resident.
The press officer for the department tells NewsWest 9, immediate jeopardy could involve one or multiple residents and the reasons for the status can be a number of different things.
It might be a situation where there might be alleged abuse and the facility has not taken appropriate steps to make sure that residents are free from the risk of that abuse, Press Officer, Cecilia Cavuto, said. It might be a situation in which residents are not being given the proper medication on the proper schedules or that their health conditions are not being properly maintained.
At this time the details of the complaint are not known, however, the immediate jeopardy status was lifted just a few hours ago.
In order for this to happen, the nursing home had to submit a plan of correction to fix the complaint.
That plan had to be approved by the state and state officials were at the nursing home every day since the investigation began.
NewsWest 9 did speak with the nursing home on Monday afternoon. They tell NewsWest 9, they are working with the state to correct any issues at the facility.
The department is still looking into the matter. Once the investigation is complete, the full details will be released to the public.
This nursing home has 160 beds and has been open for 13 years.
