Big Sur: 8 Things to do on a Highway 1 Road Trip
Big Sur is one of the most amazing places in California and one of the most spectacular coastlines in the United States. I always love getting the chance to explore it and with summer right around the corner, I figured people would be planning their own Big Sur road trip and so I wanted to share a few of my favorite spots.

Amazing USA West Coast Road Trip: San Francisco, Yosemite, Vegas, Grand Canyon, LA, Big Sur & more!
Amazing United States West Coast Road Trip! (4k)
4 States and 4 National Parks (Yosemite NP, Sequoia NP, Death Valley NP & Grand Canyon NP), 16 days, 2500 miles / 4000 km.
0:33 San Francisco, California
Our first hotel was The Hyatt Centric Fisherman’s Wharf. After checking in we explored the surroundings by visiting Pier 39 and Lombard Street. The next we visited Alcatrez Island, so we get on one of the Alcatrez Cruises boats. Alcatrez Island is one of the world’s most legendary prisons. When we returned from the Island we rented bikes at Blazing Saddles Bike Rentals. A tough bike ride over the Golden Gate Bridge! Next morning, it was time to pick up our rental car at Sixt Fishermans Warf, an Cadillac Escalade!
1:31 Yosemite National Park, California
We headed towards Yosemite National Park. First dropoff our suitcases at the Yosemite Westgate Lodge. After that we did a hike at the Tuolumne Grove Trailhead! Next day we drove to the heart of Yosemite NP, Yosemite Valley. We did some hikes in 1 of the most overwhelming sceneries ever seen. The forest, big trees, waterfalls and rivers where amazing. Especially the Yosemite Falls, with the Upper Falls and the Lower Falls where beautiful. We did an hike at “Mirror trail” with beautiful Mirror lake and the last visit of the day was Tunnel View.
2:37 Sequoia National Park, California
Next morning we drove to Sequoia National Park, parked the car at Three Rivers Comfort Inn. From there we took a shuttle bus to get into the Sequoia Park it self. Never seen such enormous trees, these huge Sequoia’s are extreemly large and old. The largest tree in the world, “The General Sherman Tree”, was the highlight of the day!
3:11 Death Valley National Park, California
The following day we visited Death Valley National Park, one of the hottest places in the world. When we arrived at our hotel, Stovepipe Wells Village Hotel, the temperature was 123 F / 50,5 C. Visiting Death Valley can’t without a visit at Sand Dunes and Badwater Basin.
3:39 Las Vegas, Nevada
The next city of our West America roadtrip was Las Vegas. We stayed at the luxurious Bellagio Hotel and Casino and had a room with view of the fontains! Walking over The Strip was really a great experience. After a short visit to Fremont Street Experience, we headed up to Machine Gun experience with it’s shooting range. We choose the “Spec Ops” package and could try out an Glock 17 9MM Pistol, M4 Machine Gun, AK47 ‘Kalashnikov’ Machine Gun and a Gauge Pump Shotgun!
In the evening we went to Hans Klok “The world’s fastest” magician at the Excalibur Hotel & Casino. What an amazing show!
6:08 Page, Arizona
Driving from Nevada through Utah to Arizona we arrived in Page. First visit was Glen Canyon dam, then Horseshoe Bend! In the afternoon Antelope Canyon Tours brought us to the colorful Antelope Canyon. After a night at Best Western View of Lake Powell Hotel we had a helicopter flight (Papillon Grand Canyon Helicopters) over Horse Shoe Bend, Glen Canyon dam, Lake Powell, Colorado river, Antelope Canyon and a landing on Tower Butte with an amazing overview of Lake Powell!
5:41 Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
We continued our way to Grand Canyon National Park, visiting a view vista points, such as Desert view watch tower, Navajo point, Lipan point and Moran point.
7:31 Meteor Crater Winslow, Arizona
We brought a short visit at Meteor Crater in Winsow. The world's best preserved meteorite impact site on Earth!
7:56 Route 66, Williams, Arizona
Our next hotel (Comfort Inn Near Grand Canyon) was on the historic route 66 in Williams, Arizona. A small touristic city, which was still worth a visit.
8:28 Los Angeles, California
Our last city, Los Angeles! Stay at Ocean view Hotel, with view on the Santa Monica Pier. First visit was Santa Monica Pier + Venice Beach with The Venice Ocean Front Walk, Muscle Beach and Skate Park. Next day we have visited Hollywood with Hollywood Sign, Rodeo Drive and Walk of fame! Our last day in LA was a full day in Disneyland Park & Disney California Adventure Park. The best attractions of the day where Incredicoaster, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Grizzly River Run and Splash Mountain.
11:09 Big Sur, Highway 1, California
The last day of our West Coast Road trip was a full driving day at Highway 1, through Big Sur to San Francisco, with very nice Vista points like Big Creek Bridge and Elephant Seal Vista Point.
What an amazing roadtrip!

BIG SUR - USA Travel Guide | Around The World
Big Sur is a region on the Central Coast of California. It contains vast wildernesses and breathtaking views as it stretches 90 miles along the rugged Pacific Ocean. It is approximately 150 miles south of San Francisco and 300 miles north of Los Angeles. The area is great for outdoor recreation and contains several state parks, two national wilderness areas and is part of the Los Padres National Forest, all of which include hiking trails. The most common visitors to Big Sur are those just driving through to enjoy the scenery. The next most common activity is hiking/backpacking in the open natural spaces.
California Highway 1 (also known as Pacific Coast Highway) winds through Big Sur flanked by the steep Santa Lucia Mountains to the east and the rocky Pacific Coast to the west. Big Sur begins just south of Carmel and continues south through the small towns of Big Sur Village (between Andrew Molera State Park and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park), Lucia, and Gorda. It ends in San Simeon (where the Hearst Castle is located). When driving on Highway 1 through Big Sur be sure to stop at the many turnouts and vista points to see the beauty of the area.
Big Sur Village is a mile-long village containing gas stations, roadside markets, lodges and restaurants.
Big Sur is known as a destination for the Merry Pranksters in the 1960s. For more information visit the Big Sur Chamber of Commerce, which is continually updated with a Calendar of Events.
Bixby Bridge, 11 miles north of Big Sur Village. Iconic bridge built in 1933. One of the most photographed in the world because of its location within such beautiful scenery.
Henry Miller Memorial Library, Highway 1, a quarter mile south of Nepenthe Restaurant, 831-667-2574. Wi-Fi internet access.
Point Sur Lighthouse, 5 miles north of Big Sur Village. Point Sur is a dominant feature along Highway 1. It is a National Historic Landmark and is one of the only complete turn-of-the-century light stations open to the public in California. Allegedly one of the most haunted places in America. Spectacular views can be had from atop Point Sur. Tours (3 hours) are offered - meet west side of highway at farm gate a quarter mile north of Pt Sur Naval Facility. Winter times Sa, Su 10AM, W 1PM. $10 adult, $5 children.
McWay Falls, 12 miles south of Big Sur Village. One of the most spectacular places anywhere in Big Sur. The falls drop 80 feet onto the beach or tide. There is a hike out to a view point but it can also be seen from the road just before Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park.
New Camaldoli Hermitage, located in Lucia off Highway 1 (25 miles south of Big Sur village), 831-667-2456,. Monastery offering guided retreats, also sells gifts and food items.
Hiking/backpacking - There are over 80 day hikes, varying in length and difficulty. There are hikes to beaches and vistas along the coast, along rivers and through canyons, and through redwood forests in the Santa Lucia Mts. For longer and more remote adventures, backpacking is an option. There are hundreds of miles of trails through the region, particularly the Ventana Wilderness. Be prepared and know what you are doing before going backpacking in the Wilderness. More information can be found at the Big Sur Ranger Station located 3 miles south of Big Sur Village, 831-667-2315. NOTE: Always check conditions before hiking or backpacking. Hiking areas in Big Sur can be closed down in winter due to mudslides. Know before you go.
Beaches - Remote and pristine beaches are accessible. Andrew Molera State Park, Pfeiffer Beach, and Sand Dollar Beach are the most commonly visited.

Discover Monterey Carmel Sights and Coast Highway 1 Top Attractions
Discover Monterey Carmel Sights and Coast Highway 1 Top Attractions:
Experience the ultimate custom touring experience by visiting the Monterey Bay Area, Carmel-by-the-Sea, and the 17-Mile Drive, including Pebble Beach and California State Route 1, famous for its and hidden natural wonders. This itinerary is fully customizable to meet your needs and preferences. This is your private tour, and your passionate guide will meet and greet you anywhere you wish. If you wish to spend more time in Monterey or Carmel, please let your guide know so they will skip the longer, scenic route on California State Route 1, and directly toward Carmel and Monterey, or vice-versa. No prior planning is required unless you have a special request. Sit back, relax, and leave the driving to us —you are in great hands as you travel in comfort in a luxury SUV or van, because our local guides are among the highest rated in the Bay Area! They’ve earned hundreds of 5-star reviews on Trip Advisor and will exceed your expectations.
After a complimentary pick-up at your hotel (anywhere between San Francisco and Carmel), you will depart south and cruise along California State Route 1, on the dramatic and rugged coastline of the Pacific Ocean. This unique and exhilarating drive will take you through the nation’s most scenic areas, from San Francisco to Monterey and Carmel. On the road, admire the Pacific Coast’s views, wildlife, and breathtaking scenery. Take a walk to hidden beaches and see endangered species, including sea otters, harbor seals, and maybe even whales or dolphins. You will travel through amazing sights, coastal towns, and attractions, passing Pacifica or Half Moon Bay, San Gregorio State Beach, Pescadero State Beach and Pigeon Point Lighthouse, Greyhound Rock County Park, and Davenport. You’ll visit Santa Cruz and its famous surfing overlook or drive via Capitola By-the-Sea as we head south passing Zmudowski State Beach Park or Moss Landing State Beach, Marina State Beach, Monterey Fisherman’s Wharf or Cannery Row, the 17-Mile Drive; and Carmel-by-the-Sea.
Delight in Monterey’s rich history and experience the bay’s vibrant lifestyle and sweeping views, running along Fisherman’s Wharf and John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row. Further explore Monterey’s seaside restaurants, quaint shops, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, museums, and wine tasting rooms.
Following Monterey, embark on the scenic 17-Mile Drive from Pacific Grove, all the way to Pebble Beach and Carmel-by-the-Sea, and enjoy magnificent scenery, including the Spanish Bay, Sunset Drive and Point Pinos Lighthouse, Asilomar Beach, the Bird’s and Seal’s Rock Overlook, Lone Cypress, and the world-renowned Pebble Beach Resort and Golf Links where you may having lunch.
Visit the enchanting village of Carmel-by-the-Sea, which is known for its stunning scenery and rich artistic history. A sophisticated and cosmopolitan village, Carmel has inspired some of the world’s finest artists, sculptors, photographers, and writers, and it is home to celebrities. Carmel is also a world-class shopping destination, and is home to charming restaurants and colorful cottages, eclectic and beautiful mansions, including Clint Eastwood’s Mission Ranch by the historic Carmel Mission. Clint Eastwood was the nonpartisan mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea from 1986 to 1988, and Doris Day helped him to change some of the city’s outdated and strange laws and ordinances. For instance, it was prohibited to sell and eat ice cream on public streets in Carmel, and a permit was once required to wear high heels. Carmel prohibits chain restaurants, and most of streets have no addresses, but each house has name.
There is so much to see in this area, that it can’t possibly be done in one day, please consider our two-day custom trip, to see Monterey, Carmel and the stunning wonders of Big Sur, majestic Hearst Castle, and Paso Robles wine country. This package includes hotel accommodations (all applicable taxes and park entrance fees are included as well). Rather than staying at one of the crowded San Francisco hotels, you can choose to stay at an oceanfront hotel in Carmel, San Simeon, or Big Sur, or customize your trip for drop-off at an airport or train station, at no extra charge, including the cities of San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, Salinas, Monterey, San Jose or San Francisco International airport.
If you only have one day to spend in Monterey Bay and Carmel, we highly recommending adding a couple of overtime hours to fully enjoy this wonderful destination in-depth, and explore sites not included on this itinerary such as the world famous Bixby Bridge in northern Big Sur. You may even choose a spectacular dining experience, perched on a hanging rock on the dramatic Oceanside, located in northern Big Sur. The scenery is stunning!

Amtrak Coast Starlight, in a Sleeper Car Bedroom
The overnight 14 Coast Starlight (Amtrak) from Los Angeles to Seattle.
--3 states
--1,377 miles
--36 hours
--29 stops (a few afford a chance for some fresh air, for a few minutes)
--incalculable jaw drops at the beauty seen from along the ocean coastline to the snowy mountain ranges and backdoor views of towns and cities.
I can't recommend this enough! What an experience! What a way to see the country! The whole ride was smooth, quiet, and tranquil. Whether you enjoy a book in the glass-domed car while sipping on some coffee, or nurse a beer through the passing majesty outside your window, you are rocked gently into a relaxation that is unlike any other. The staff was ever ready to accommodate needs and/or wants. Guest speakers rode along, regaling passengers with tales of the flora, fauna, and history of the areas. Fellow passengers were in equal states of awe and wonder, evidenced by the acknowledging head tilts complete with twinkling eyes and hearty grins. Childhood fancy was stirred together with an aged appreciation and I found that though we were moving northward, time had stood still.
Note: Yes...I have since learned to refrain from filming in portrait mode, when using a phone. ????
Note: Thank you, all, who have clarified that it's a Lounge Car featured in this video, not an actual Parlour Car. I did not intend to mislead anyone; during our ride, the staff and fellow passengers were calling it the Parlour Car, and I was at fault for following the flock in my understanding. Our train's Parlour Car must have been undergoing maintenance, at the time. I did find, however, the Lounge Car to be quite enjoyable. Nevertheless, I imagine riding with an official Parlour Car would enhance the experience, greatly. Thank you all, for clarifying this, for me and for others.
Note: for mobile device viewers, annotations don't appear on-screen. At the 2:28 mark, it should be noted that There is a traditional door on this bathroom; it's just not visible, here.
