Snowmobiling in West Yellowstone and Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center
Check out my facebook:
Over the Christmas break, we went snowmobiling around West Yellowstone, MT. West Yellowstone is considered the snowmobiling capital of the world. The town is located in where the Gallatin National Forest meets the Targhee National Forest in Idaho. It is one of two entrances to Yellowstone Park located in Montana. There is hundreds of miles of snowmobiling trails and areas accessible from the small town. It is also the place to be if you are planning to visit Yellowstone during the winter. During the summer, West Yellowstone is visited by millions of tourists each year as they make their way into Yellowstone Park. We went with a guide as this was our first time on a snowmobile, and if you are uncomfortable with the idea of being alone there are lots of guided trips in and around the area, but it was a little slow paced me and my brother. There were plenty of maps and signs posted along the trails and there were a lot of people on the trails. If I were to go back to the area I would not go with a guide. Also, something they don't tell you in the brochure, many of the trails are groomed and have developed bumps similar to skiing down moguls on a slope. After miles of these bumps, my rear end was flatter than a pancake. The next day you will not be able to walk from being so stiff. But it was worth the pain!

The day after, we went to the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center. This was a great little stop that was inside of town. There was even warming huts to get out of the below zero weather. The grizzly bears in the center are mostly orphans from problem bears in Yellowstone Park that would have died in the wild if they had not been rescued by the center. There are also wolves that are fun to look at. A person could visit Yellowstone Park every year for their entire life and not see a bear or a wolf so this is a great place to complete your park experience. There is also a great museum about Grizzly Bears. I especially thought that the exhibit on why the bears were so popular for poaching was interesting.
Please check out the centers website and plan your trip to include this great stop.

Beautiful Montgomery Vector hydraulic elevator @ Methodist Oak Cliff Garage II -Dallas TX
Copyright DoverElevatorFan1. All Rights Reserved.
This is one of the most epic elevators I have seen. It has glass doors which I have never seen on a vector, en epic dry powered pump which is rare on a vector, and it’s one of the highest vector hydraulics out there. These remind me of the former garage elevators at Rivercenter mall in San Antonio before they got a crappy mod.
Manufacturing plywood boards: then and now
Plywood is a simple material made by glueing together thin sheets of wood, known as veneers or plies. These basic elements have remained broadly the same throughout its history. The most significant breakthrough in its production came in the early 1800s with the development of steam-powered machines that could cut veneers cheaply. The most influential of these was the rotary veneer cutter.
The cutter rotates a log against a wide, horizontal blade, causing it to ‘peel’ into a continuous sheet of wood. This enables the creation of longer, wider sheets of veneer than previously possible and with little waste. Using these machines meant that plywood could be manufactured quickly and inexpensively on a large scale.
This film shows the stages in manufacturing plywood boards in the mid-20th century and today. The process remains essentially unchanged, although today many of the machines are much faster and computer controlled.

SUMMARY
=======
Bent's Old Fort is an 1833 fort located in Otero County in southeastern Colorado, United States. A company owned by Charles Bent and William Bent and Ceran St. Vrain built the fort to trade with Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho Plains Indians and trappers for buffalo robes. For much of its 16-year history, the fort was the only major white American permanent settlement on the Santa Fe Trail between Missouri and the Mexican settlements. It was destroyed under mysterious circumstances in 1849.
The area of the fort was designated a National Historic Site under the National Park Service on June 3, 1960. It was further designated a National Historic Landmark later that year on December 19, 1960.
The fort was reconstructed and is open to the public.

Texas (, locally ; Spanish: Texas or Tejas [ˈtexas]) is the second largest state in the United States by both area and population. Geographically located in the South Central region of the country, Texas shares borders with the U.S. states of Louisiana to the east, Arkansas to the northeast, Oklahoma to the north, New Mexico to the west, and the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas to the southwest, while the Gulf of Mexico is to the southeast.
Houston is the most populous city in Texas and the fourth largest in the U.S., while San Antonio is the second-most populous in the state and seventh largest in the U.S. Dallas–Fort Worth and Greater Houston are the fourth and fifth largest metropolitan statistical areas in the country, respectively. Other major cities include Austin, the second-most populous state capital in the U.S., and El Paso. Texas is nicknamed The Lone Star State to signify its former status as an independent republic, and as a reminder of the state's struggle for independence from Mexico. The Lone Star can be found on the Texas state flag and on the Texan state seal. The origin of Texas's name is from the word taysha, which means friends in the Caddo language.Due to its size and geologic features such as the Balcones Fault, Texas contains diverse landscapes common to both the U.S. Southern and Southwestern regions. Although Texas is popularly associated with the U.S. southwestern deserts, less than 10% of Texas's land area is desert. Most of the population centers are in areas of former prairies, grasslands, forests, and the coastline. Traveling from east to west, one can observe terrain that ranges from coastal swamps and piney woods, to rolling plains and rugged hills, and finally the desert and mountains of the Big Bend.
The term six flags over Texas refers to several nations that have ruled over the territory. Spain was the first European country to claim the area of Texas. France held a short-lived colony. Mexico controlled the territory until 1836 when Texas won its independence, becoming an independent Republic. In 1845, Texas joined the union as the ...

Benjamin Harrison
Benjamin Harrison (August 20, 1833 – March 13, 1901) was the 23rd President of the United States (1889–1893); he was the grandson of the ninth President, William Henry Harrison. Harrison had become a prominent local attorney, Presbyterian church leader and politician in Indianapolis, Indiana. During the American Civil War, he served the Union for most of the war as a colonel and on February 14, 1865 was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as a brevet brigadier general of volunteers to rank from January 23, 1865. Afterwards, he unsuccessfully ran for the governorship of Indiana but was later elected to the U.S. Senate by the Indiana legislature.
Harrison, a Republican, was elected to the presidency in 1888, defeating the Democratic incumbent Grover Cleveland. Hallmarks of his administration included unprecedented economic legislation, including the McKinley Tariff, which imposed historic protective trade rates, and the Sherman Antitrust Act; Harrison facilitated the creation of the National Forests through an amendment to the Land Revision Act of 1891. He also substantially strengthened and modernized the Navy, and conducted an active foreign policy. He proposed, in vain, federal education funding as well as voting rights enforcement for African Americans during his administration.

The term six flags over Texas refers to several nations that have ruled over the territory. Spain was the first European country to claim the area of Texas. France held a short-lived colony. Mexico controlled the territory until 1836 when Texas won its independence, becoming an independent Republic. In 1845, Texas joined the union as the 28th state. The state's annexation set off a chain of events that led to the Mexican–American War in 1846. A slave state before the American Civil War, Texas declared its secession from the U.S. in early 1861, and officially joined the Confederate States of America on March 2 of the same year. After the Civil War and the restoration of its representation in the federal government, Texas entered a long period of economic stagnation.
Historically four major industries shaped the Texas economy prior to World War II: cattle and bison, cotton, timber, and oil. Before and after the U.S. Civil War the cattle industry, which Texas came to dominate, was a major economic driver for the state, thus creating the traditional image of the Texas cowboy. In the later 19th century cotton and lumber grew to be major industries as the cattle industry became less lucrative. It was ultimately, though, the discovery of major petroleum deposits (Spindletop in particular) that initiated an economic boom which became the driving force behind the economy for much of the 20th century. With strong investments in universities, Texas developed a diversified economy and high tech industry in the mid-20th century. As of 2015, it is second on the list of the most Fortune 500 companies with 54. With a growing base of industry, the state leads in many industries, including agriculture, petrochemicals, energy, computers and electronics, aerospace, and biomedical sciences. Texas has led the U.S. in state export revenue since 2002, and has the second-highest gross state product. If Texas were a sovereign state, it would be the 10th largest economy in the world.

Artist Peter Rogers Returns on 50th Anniversary of Iconic Mural 7.31.14
Peter Rogers, the artist of “Texas Moves Toward Statehood,” a dramatic mural of Texas history that has been a fixture in the lobby of the Lorenzo de Zavala State Archives and Library Building for 50 years, returned to Austin for a public talk. Rogers spoke about his experience painting the mural, his acquaintance with two governors—Price Daniel who participated in the mural’s commission, and John Connally, governor when it was completed in the summer of 1964—details of the mural, and his career in art.
The 45’ x 13’ mural depicts the events and leaders that comprise the story of Texas history from territorial settlers, through the revolutionary period, the years of the Republic, the Comanche wars and the growth of the cattle and oil industries that defined the state in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Based in Austin, TX, the Texas State Library and Archives Commission strives to preserve yesterday, inform today, and inspire tomorrow. Visit us online:
