Burma Bistro - Heritage Drinking & Dining in the Heart of Yangon
I didn't have anything to eat or drink at the Burma Bistro. So this isn't a video review. And that's a good thing, because I'm not a qualified food/restaurant reviewer in any way. I just happened to spot the Burma Bistro on a number of my walks around Yangon, and on this particular day, I decided to pop in and take a look around.
I had my GoPro with me, so I took some video of my tour of the Burma Bistro. Call this a quick overview of the decor, design, and menu of the restaurant. I came away with positive feelings about the place. I liked it. And the prices were not nearly as high as I was expecting.
Enjoy. ????

Day one in Yangon | The BEST welcome to Myanmar
Today is our first day in Myanmar and we are so excited for our time in our 3rd country to begin!
After flying from Singapore to Yangon the night before, we get out early to explore the city of Yangon. Our plan is to start with a 15 minute walk from our hostel to the Sule Pagoda but 15 minutes quickly turns into an hour as we keep turning off onto side streets where they are having morning markets. There is so much to see and take in and we love getting lost in the side streets and getting a glimpse into local life.
We then make it to the Sule Pagoda which is a small Pagoda in the center of town all the main streets seem to lead toward.
From the Sula Pagoda we head to the Bogyoke Aung San Market for lunch. We pick a stall where a lot of local people are eating. While we get off to a bit of an awkward start as the menu is in Burmese and the owners of the food stall do not speak any English (and of course we do not speak Burmese), this quickly becomes one of our favorite meals of all time.
This is all thanks to the man sitting next to us who jumps in and orders a few dishes for us (I will add he also does not speak any English). Once the food comes, he sends something back to get some sauce added... he takes my chopsticks and stirs one of our other dishes because we clearly are struggling. We exchange no words that either of us can understand but we still share many, many laughs together. The food was all DELICIOUS! We still don't know what we ate... and everything was under $2 USD!
It was such an incredible, authentic and unexpected experience and it has us LOVING Myanmar from day 1.
From the market we head back to our hostel to relax a bit and then go to the Shwedagon Pagoda at sunset. This pagoda is Yangon’s most famous landmark. It is a gold plated pagoda that measures nearly 100 meters high and is over 2,500 years old. The pagoda alone is incredibly impressive but as the sun sets, the monks begin to light the candles surrounding the pagoda, the bells are chiming, people are praying and it is such a peaceful and magical setting.
We finish up at a couple different night markets and then call it a night after an AMAZING first day and introduction into Myanmar. We are now even more excited for what is in store in this country!

Myanmar's Thingyan Water Festival 2019 - Day 2: Happiness Level Higher!
Once again, I had no idea what to expect on Day 2 of the Thingyan water festival in Yangon. Would things change? Would they just pick up the festive air and the music and the water wars from where they left off on Day 1?
If anything, things got more intense. The happiness level went from high to higher. And I got the opportunity to ride in my own truck and get the extreme water blessing from the hundred hoses at the main stage. Believe it or not, I lost nearly all of these video files. My GoPro froze up and all the files were deleted from the memory card as a result. But with a recovery program, I got them back. It took an entire day to retrieve the files, but I think it was worth it.
Cheers,

Shampoo Island is a tiny place just a short distance from shore in Mawlamyine. The island is home to a group of monks living in monasteries there. However, they encourage visitors, and it's possible to take a small local boat out to the island and back again.
As I said in the video, trips to places like Shampoo Island are my favorite type of day trip because they don't involve hours of difficult travel. The boats to the island are right inside city limits, and getting there involves nothing more than a pleasant stroll to the jetty on the river and getting on a small boat. Just a few minutes later, you're there.
It's a beautiful island - very lush and shady with a multitude of pagodas and interesting sights. But it also comes with an interesting history, and it seemed like an obvious place for a 5-Fact Travel Challenge. Was I successful with this challenge? Did I learn 5 interesting new facts? Yes, I guess I did, but I needed a bit of help from the Internet.
Cheers,

Streetside Repairs in Yangon
TIME STAMPS: 5:20 Fixing My Sandals; 16:48 Tour of New Hostel; 22:33 New Gizmo for my GoPro
One of my favorite aspects to living and traveling in Asia is that it is often far easier (and cheaper) to accomplish daily tasks. In Taiwan, for example, getting a new muffler on your scooter can take thirty minutes. You simply drive up to the shop, they remove the old muffler and put on the new one right away, and they generally don't charge for the labor. You just pay for the new muffler. In Canada, the same task could take weeks as they have to order in the new muffler and schedule your repair for next month. And then they charge you a fortune.
And if your sandals are broken in Canada, the normal thing to do is to throw them away and buy new ones. It would cost more to repair them than to buy new ones. But in Asia, you can find small street-side repair stalls for just about anything. And on this day, I went in search of one of these stalls to have my sandals repaired. They are obviously worn out and it's time to buy new sandals, but I figured that with some repairs, I could get use them for another month or two.
Cheers,
Douglas (AKA The Cycling Canadian)

11 Things To Do in Yangon, Myanmar (Are You Ready!?)
Get more details about these things to do in Yangon here:
1. Shwedagon Pagoda (ရွှေတိဂုံစေတီတော်) - Probably the most important religious monument and most sacred site in Yangon and throughout Myanmar is the Shwedagon Pagoda (ရွှေတိဂုံစေတီတော်). The golden stupa of the pagoda is covered in gold, and it’s so bright that I you have squint when you look at it. At the top of the pagoda, in the small umbrella looking top, are thousands of gems and diamonds - though it’s pretty challenging to see all the way up there. The Shwedagon Pagoda is a place you must visit when you’re in Yangon.
2. Local Market - One of my favorite things to do in any city I visit about the world is to visit a local fresh market - that’s where life takes place and where the action goes down. There are no shortage of fresh local markets in Yangon, and one of the best in downtown is on 26th street, across the main road from the Shri Kali Temple. The market occupies a block of downtown, and there’s an indoor section, but I really like the street side part of the market.
3. Bogyoke Aung San Market - One of the centrally located markets in downtown Yangon, located at the northern side of town, is Bogyoke Aung San Market, also known by its former name of Scott Market. If you’re looking for souvenirs, gems and jewelry, and fabric, this is a great place for you to visit when you’re in Yangon.
4. Sule Pagoda (ဆူးေလဘုရား) - Another one of the most important religious, political, and overall just city landmarks in Yangon is the Sule Pagoda - basically all roads eventually lead to the Sule Pagoda and it’s a huge transportation hub. You can pay to enter the pagoda for $3, but in my opinion there’s not that much to see inside, but it’s rather the things around the are that are more impressive.
5. Chinatown, Yangon - One of my favorite things to do in Yangon is eat, and if you love food and markets, Chinatown is a place you can’t miss. In the evening, the city of Yangon in the Chinatown area comes alive sprawling with food and people. 19th street in Yangon is a very famous as the barbecue street in the city, and there are a few restaurants where you can get a table, choose some kebabs and have them barbecue them up for you. If you love eating and drinking, dinner at 19th street is one of the fun things to do in Yangon.
6. Kandawgyi Park - There are two parts to Kandawgyi Park, the boardwalk, and the restaurants area - each has an entrance fee. It makes a great relief from the city and place to relax in the natural beauty.
7. Chaukhtatgyi Paya (Chak Htat Gyi Buddha) - This giant reclining Buddha is housed in a huge shed, and it’s among the main Buddhist religious sites in Yangon. Originally in the same location, there was a seating Buddha, but when it fell over, it was replaced by a reclining.
8. National Museum of Myanmar - If you’d like to know more about the history and culture of Myanmar (Burma), one of the attractions in Yangon that you should check out is the National Museum. It was a little outdated, but the exhibitions were educational and interesting.
9. Yangon Circular Railroad - Not really one of the traditional things to do in Yangon, Myanmar, but taking the local circular train route is a great opportunity to see some of the outskirts of the city.
10. Walk Around Yangon - Probably the best way to experience the city is to just get out on your feet and explore Yangon by food - you never know what’s going to happen or what you’re going to see or come across, but it will be full of action.
11. Myanmar Food and Street Food - There’s nothing better than traveling to eat and experiences a country through its food. Yangon is filled with both street food stalls and restaurant where you can get a sample of the local cuisine. Another part of the Myanmar culture I love is the constant tea drinking - nearly everywhere you look, you’ll find a place to sit on the side of the road and drink a cup of hot tea and socialize.
Yangon is a great city, and what I love so much about it is that it’s always full of action, people are extremely friendly, there are many different types of food and street food to try, and it’s just such a vibrant, always entertaining city. Hope you can visit Yangon!

Over the last few days, I'd tried to buy a train ticket out of Yangon to a city called Mawlamyine, but all the trains were fully booked for the big Thadingyut Festival. So I decided to stay in Yangon for the festival, and that meant moving to a new hotel in a different part of town. Luckily, the festival celebrations take place all over the city, and an entire nearby market street was closed down just for the Festival of Lights.
Since it was the Festival of Lights, most of the activities took place after dark. During the day, I went to the train station to try again to buy a ticket. And I dropped by the famous Bogyoke Aung San Market - a must-visit spot for all tourists passing through Yangon who are in need of some souvenirs and gifts to take home.

My train ride to Mawlamyine ended in a fairly chaotic fashion because both my microphone and GoPro batteries died, and I had no fresh ones left. So I wasn't able to pin on an epilogue and sum up the experience. I do that today with a look back at the events of my arrival.
I also go out for my first daytime stroll around Mawlamyine - my new temporary home - and I find a spot near the market to have dinner. Despite my room adventures, it was a great day.

Myanmar Holiday - Yangon - Shwedagon and Sule Pagodas
This is day 1 and 2 of our holiday to Myanmar in 2018
We flew into Yangon and the next day visited Peoples Park, Shwedagon pagoda, Sule Pagoda, 26th Street Markets and wandered the amazing streets.
What an amazing place.
A special sleepertrain ride (Bagan - Yangon) and zoo in Yangon
The 4th Episode from our adventure in Asia. This episode starts out in Bagan, where we took the night-train to go to Yangon. As the only tourists there it guaranteed for an epic journey. The landscape was amazing.
Then we arrived in the old capital Yangon/Rangoon. This was a dirty city but it sure had it's charms. This is the final destination of our trip through Myanmar, hope this country won't change for a while.

Buying a train ticket in Yangon is a fun experience. I did it once before and bought a ticket for a sleeper car on a train from Yangon to Bagan in the north. That train ride was so interesting that I wanted to ride on some more trains. And I thought I would start with a train from Yangon to the town of Mawlamyine in the south. With a big festival on the horizon, there was a time crunch, and I went to the train station to buy a ticket a couple of days in advance. How did things turn out? Well, let's just say it was a bit of a ticket treasure hunt.

This is Huge Complex Pagoda in Myanmar
I visit the huge complex pagoda in Myanmar, which is called Shwedagon Pagoda. It is the most sacred Buddhist pagoda in Myanmar. It is really huge but I couldn't film well to show real size. It is one of the most impressing religious places on my trip because of the size and gold color. If you plan to visit, you should try to visit at the sunset because the gold color becomes more bright.

MYANMAR - BURMA
Since 2011 one can see the beginnings of a democratization process, before that the country was a military dictatorship.
Only in 2012 the strict censorship was relaxed.
There is a special relationship with the neighbours China and India.
Although rich in raw materials (including rubies, jade), counts Myanmar still to the poorer countries.
Frequent power cuts, high spending on the police, military and secret services are probably also to blame.
Some Western companies have withdrawn because of a lack of
prospect of economic success, exaggerated bureaucracy and pronounced corruption. On the other hand China, Japan, Korea and Singapur increase their commitment.
Tourism offers a wide range of sights:
the Shwedagon Pagoda in the former capital Rangoon is the largest and presumably most valuable stupa in the world,
from the base to the top of the tower covered with gold.
Other attractions in the country are the extensive facilities of the ancient capital Bagan with over 2,000 sacred buildings from four centuries, the Golden Rock at Kyaikto, the Inle Lake with the swimming gardens, the city of Mandalay as a cultural center
with many sights in their surroundings.
The Rakhaing/Rakhine state in the west owns the beach of Ngapali, which is for travelers one of the most popular destinations.
I would like to emphasize that on our tour in Nov. 2016 we were received with hospitality and enthusiasm. No matter how poor people may have been - the smile in their faces was remarkable.
