Bingham Canyon Copper Mine
Kennecott Utah Copper Mine at Bingham Canyon (USA) recovering from enormous landslide (10 April 2013)
Bingham Canyon Mine, The Largest Open-Pit Mines in the World
Bingham Canyon Mine, The Largest Open-Pit Mines in the World
The Bingham Canyon Mine, also known as the Kennecott Copper Mine, is an open-pit mining operation extracting a large porphyry copper deposit southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, in the Oquirrh Mountains. The Bingham Canyon Mine is one of the largest open-pit mines in the world, measuring more than 4 kilometers or 2.5 miles wide and 1,200 meters or 3,900 feet deep. Since 1906, when the first steam shovels began removing waste rock from the sides of the mountain to reach the low-grade copper ore deposits, Bingham Canyon Mine has yielded more than 19 million tons of copper, 23 million ounces of gold, 190 million ounces of silver, plus other minerals. The value of the resources extracted from here is greater than the Comstock Lode, Klondike, and California gold rush mining regions combined!
Bingham Canyon discovered in 1848 by two brothers, Sanford and Thomas Bingham. Although they reported the find to their leader, Brigham Young advised against pursuing mining operations because the survival and establishment of Mormon settlements was of greater importance at that time. It was not until 1863 that extraction of low-grade porphyry copper ore began. These nineteenth-century mines, though, were relatively small. However, in 1903, Daniel Jackling and Enos Wall organized the Utah Copper Company and began construction of a pilot mill at Copperton, just beyond the mouth of the canyon. Serious mining efforts got underway in 1906. The Kennecott Copper Corporation that operated mines in Kennecott, Alaska, acquired the company in 1936. this mine, which is on the National Register of Historic Sites, is just one of the two man-made objects on earth that can be seen by astronauts from outer space. The other is the Great Wall Of China.
On April 10, 2013, Bingham Canyon also produced the largest, non-volcanic landslide in the history of North America when 65–70 million cubic meters of dirt and rock thundered down the side of the pit. The event was large enough that seismic networks designed to record earthquakes detected the rumble of sliding debris.
Today, the mine is owned by Rio Tinto Group, an international mining and exploration company headquartered in the United Kingdom. The copper operations at Bingham Canyon Mine are managed through Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation (KUCC) which operates the mine, a concentrator plant, a smelter, and a refinery. As of 2010, KUCC is the second largest copper producer in the United States and meets about 13-18% percent of the country’s needs for copper.
A big tire from one of the mine's 190-ton capacity dump trucks that serves as a photo op, and a tape loop that spouts facts 'n figures about the mighty hole in English, Spanish, German, and Japanese. The Bingham Canyon Mine produces a quarter-millions tons of copper annually, it announces. The mine has been dubbed, 'The Richest Hole on Earth'.

Sol Lake City and headed out to the west. 20 Did been an extra in the downtown. Acid soil was huge. It seemed as if made for mountain stretches is the largest open-air copper mine in the dirt mountain world. The biggest man-made hole in Bingham Canyon. So far, only 1.2 km far down the depth in meters and produce 13-18 percent of US copper amount. The copper goes to where the gravel increasingly be seen touching the stones are lodged. Mormon pioneers in 1848, while Brother Bingham found haetdanda start mining. Ahjjilham even felt a tremendous extent of the copper mine. Also it looks like toy truck operations, a tremendous amount of trucks that can actually look at me 360 tons at a time.

11 Most Massive Mines in the World
From the worlds largest gold mine found on the top of a mountain to the largest diamond mine in the world here are the most massive mines in the world!
Subscribe to American EYE!
5.. Asbestos Mine, Canada
Also known as the Jeffrey Mine, it’s located in Asbestos, Quebec and it was in operation until 2012. It’s a whopping 2 kilometers wide and 370 meters deep! Check out this thing on google maps and you can tell how completely massive this thing is! It’s the by far the largest asbestos mine in the world. For a long period of time, people would use this mineral to put into their walls and keep their homes from catching on fire! But recently there’s been a link with asbestos and a disease called mesothelioma, which is a lung condition. This is a toxic substance that people should avoid, so obviously this large mine went out of business. The lake at the bottom might look like an inviting blue, but you can bet your bottom dollar, it’s highly toxic! The small town that grew with the thriving asbestos industry feels like they’ve kind of lost their identity once the mine was forced to close, but people do still live there.
4. Mcarthur River Uranium Mine
In case you were wondering which mine produces the most uranium in the world, that would be of course the Mcarthur River uranium mine in Saskatchewan Canada. This huge deposit was found in 1988 and finally a mining operation took place in 1997, when it began producing what’s known as Yellowcake. It’s not the kind of yellow cake you’d eat with your grandparents. This stuff has a horrific odor and basically what it is, is concentrated uranium powder which can then be used for powering nuclear reactors. We imagine this powdery substance is quite difficult to get ahold of. There aren’t a ton of photos of this place but, it does produce about 13 percent of the global uranium production across the globe.
3. Diavik Diamond Mine
In case you thought it was Africa who had all the massive diamond mines, think again! The Diavik Diamond mine, found in the the northwest territories of Canada is one of the largest producers of diamonds in the Northern hemisphere and this place is pretty crazy! They annually produce 7 million carats of diamonds each year and you better believe it’s not easy to get here. The Diavik mine is found north of the arctic circle and it’s definitely cold! This photo here shows the subarctic landscapes that surround the diamond mine. You thought getting to work in the morning was tough for you? Imagine trying to get to work here! Just recently in 2015, this diamond produced what was known as the Diavik Foxfire 187.7 which is one of the largest rough gem quality diamonds ever produced.
2. Siberian Diamond Mine
Also known as the Mirny Mine, The USSR began searching for ways to make to make themselves a more economical stable and independent union. In 1955 the Soviets discovered large diamond deposits at this site in the far away lands of Siberia and many people got to work very quickly in order to help bring wealth to the union. After about 20 years of operations, they finally decided that At one point this mine produced 10 million carats of diamonds a year and reaches a max depth of 524 meters or around 1700 feet making it the 2nd largest excavated hole in the world. The mine is so deep, airspace is closed over the hole due to helicopter crashes caused from the downward flow of air. The construction of this in the frigid conditions of Siberia must have been grueling and downright cruel. Sources state that the machinery used at this mine had to be covered at night or it would freeze Are the diamonds worth freezing to death?! It’s unoperational today but Some claim that there’s still a bunch of diamonds in this mine and the whole thing could be worth about 12 Billion dollars. It’s possible that controlling this diamond is mine is crucial to controlling the price of diamonds across the world.
Bingham Copper Mine
The bingham copper mine located near Salt Lake City Utah is home to the biggest pit in the world and it’s been in operation since 1903. It’s about 2.5 miles wide and if it were a stadium, it would be able to fit an estimated 9.5 million people. It keeps getting bigger and bigger too! Diligent workers can move about 250,000 tons of rock each day and it’s even become a tourist attraction in recent years before a massive landslide took place. Some claim that this was the biggest non volcanic landslide to take place in North American modern history. This photo we see here shows you the aftermath of this massive landslide and Bingham Copper mine and it makes you wonder how safe some of the conditions at these mines truly are. The landslides were so massive, that they actually triggered a few small earthquakes! Experts estimated that 165 tons of earth slide down from the top of the mine all the way to the bottom.
Kennecott Copper Mine (Utah, USA)
Kennecott's Bingham Canyon Mine has produced more copper than any mine in history - about 18.7 million tons. The mine is 2-3/4 miles across at the top and 3/4 of a mile deep. The elevation of the Bingham Canyon Mine drops from 8,040 feet above sea level to 4,390 feet above sea level. The Visitors Center is located at 6,440 feet above sea level. It takes about 15 different minerals to make a car ... 35 different minerals to make a television ... 30 minerals to make a computer ... and as many as 42 different minerals to make a telephone.

It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 under the name Bingham Canyon Open Pit Copper Mine. The mine experienced a massive landslide in April of 2013 and a smaller slide in September of 2013.
Udachnaya was discovered on June 15, 1955, just two days after the discovery of the diamond pipe Mir by Soviet geologist Vladimir Shchukin and his team. It is more than 600 metres (1,970 ft) deep, making it the third deepest open-pit mine in the world (after Bingham Canyon Mine and Chuquicamata).
The nearby settlement of Udachny is named for the deposit.
As of 2010, Udachnaya pipe is controlled by Russian diamond company Alrosa, which planned to halt open-pit mining in favor of underground mining in 2010.
The mine has estimated reserves of 225.8 million carats of diamonds and an annual production capacity of 10.4 million carats
Chuquicamata, or Chuqui as it is more familiarly known, is by excavated volume the biggest open pit copper mine in the world, located in the north of Chile, just outside of Calama, 215 km northeast of Antofagasta and 1,240 km north of the capital, Santiago. The mine is owned and operated by Codelco, a Chilean state enterprise, since the Chilean nationalization of copper in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Its depth of 850 metres (2,790 ft) makes it the second deepest open-pit mine in the world (after Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah, USA).
The Diavik Diamond Mine is a diamond mine in the North Slave Region of the Northwest Territories, Canada, about 300 kilometres (190 mi) north of Yellowknife. It has become an important part of the regional economy, employing 700, grossing C$100 million in sales, and producing approximately 7.5 million carats (1,500 kg (3,300 lb)) of diamonds annually.[2] The area was surveyed in 1992 and construction began in 2001, with production commencing in January 2003. It is connected by an ice road and Diavik Airport with a 5,235 ft (1,596 m) gravel runway regularly accommodating Boeing 737 jet aircraft.
The Grasberg Mine is the largest gold mine and the third largest copper mine in the world. It is located in the province of Papua in Indonesia near Puncak Jaya, the highest mountain in Papua, and it has 19,500 employees. It is majority owned through a subsidiary by Freeport-McMoRan, which owns 90.64% of PT Freeport Indonesia, the principal operating subsidiary in Indonesia, including 9.36% owned through its wholly owned subsidiary, PT Indocopper Investama. The Government of Indonesia owns the remaining 9.36% of PT Freeport Indonesia. FCX operates under an agreement with the Government of Indonesia, which allows Freeport to conduct exploration, mining and production activities in a 24,700-acre area (Block A). It also conducts exploration activities in an approximate 500,000-acre area (Block B). All of Freeport's proven and probable mineral reserves and current mining operations are located in Block A. The 2006 production was 610,800 tonnes of copper; 58,474,392 grams of gold; and 174,458,971 grams of silver.

Rescuersnow admit they arelooking for almost 200missing in killer US landslide Officials doubt a
With Utah's relatively dry climate, mudslides and landslides are not the natural disasters that first come to mind, but according to experts at the Utah Geological Survey, there are potentially hundreds of high hazard landslide areas, many of them along the hillside developments in northern Utah.
Even though we are a desert state we do have landslides, Geologist Rich Giraud said. ...Generally we see landslides move in northern Utah anywhere between about the first of March on through about the first of May or even late May.
Experts like Giraud said high water years typically increase the chances of a major landslide. He said it's not very likely this spring and summer, but if we see a water year with just a couple inches above normal in the valley, a significant landslide would not be out of the question.
We do have areas that we do produce landslides, especially spring time types of landslides, and a lot of that is just dependent upon the fact that we have some weak swirls, we have steep slopes, and we have infrastructure that is built in and around those, and there's problems and it can be at risk, he said.
According to the Utah Geological Survey, there are 37 to 358 areas they deem prone to potential large-scale landslides in the state, with many of those risk areas spanning from Weber to Utah counties.
Charlene Tanner lives in North Salt Lake, where dozens of homes have been demolished due to slides over the past 15 years. She said the worry of a big slide is always at the back of her mind.
We've all seen what can happen, she said. The force of Mother Nature is unbelievable.
North Salt Lake Assistant City Manager Ken Leetham said they've conducted soil tests and have safety ordinances in place to lower the risk for residents in slide-prone areas.
If we have proposed development in areas that are not suitable for development we have tools in place to say no to that development, he said. Most of our hillside development, probably two-thirds of our development, is fairly recent, that is within the last 12 to 15 years, and we're pretty confident that we had good soil testing practices in place for that time.
If anyone is looking to buy a home or build on existing property, experts encourage people to do their research and access slide history for a particular area on the Utah Geological Survey's website, or check with the city for their soil test records.
Experts say 1982/83 was a big water year (a water year is measured from October 1 to September 30) for Utah, with northern Utah seeing several landslides and massive flooding downtown, and the Thistle slide, which remains the most costly landslide in North America so far.

1. The Great Blue Hole
The Great Blue Hole is a large underwater sinkhole off the coast of Belize. It is a remarkable creation of nature. The Great Blue Hole is one of the world's most recognizable natural wonder. It is believed the hole is the world's largest sea-hole. It is about 125 meters deep and its diameter is about 300 meters wide. It has been created as a cause of sea level increase about 65,000 years ago. It was formed during several episodes of Quaternary glaciation when sea levels were much lower. The analysis of stalactites found in Great Blue Hole shows that formation has taken place 153,000, 66,000, 60,000, and 15,000 years ago. As the ocean began to rise again, the caves were flooded.
2. The Diavik Mine
The Diavik Mine is a mine in the Northwest Territory of Canada. This mine was opened in 2003 and it produces 8 million carats or about 1,600 kg (3500 lb) of diamonds every year. It has become an important part of the regional economy, employing 700 people. Diavik Diamond Mine goes to 240 meters below the surface.
3. Guatemala City Sinkhole
In 2007 Guatemala got one of the biggest holes in the world. At first they believed that the hole has been the consequence of rain during the tropical storm Agatha. Later they discovered that this hole was caused by humans. According to Sam Bonis, a geologist at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, who is currently living in Guatemala City, a burst sewer pipe or storm drain probably hollowed out the underground cavity. The Guatemala City sinkhole, estimated to be 18 meters (60 feet) wide and 100 meters (300 feet) deep, appears to have been triggered by the deluge from tropical storm Agatha.
4. Udachnaya pipe
Udachnaya pipe is a diamond deposit in the Daldyn-Alakit kimberlite field in Sakha Republic, Russia. It is an open-pit mine, and is located just outside the Arctic circle. Udachnaya pipe is more than 600 meters (1,970 ft) deep, which makes it the 3rd deepest open-pit mine in the world. Since 2010,Udachnaya pipe has been controlled by Russian diamond company Alrosa.
5. The Bingham Canyon Mine
The Bingham Canyon Mine is an open-pit mining operation extracting a large porphyry copper deposit southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, in the Oquirrh Mountains. The Bingham Canyon pit is now 2.5 miles wide and very deep. The mine has been in production since 1906, and has resulted in the creation of a pit over 1.2 km (0.75 miles) deep, 4 km (2.5 miles) wide, and covering 7.7 km² (1,900 acres).
6. The Mirny Diamond Mine, Russia
Mir Mine which is also called Mirny Mine is an open pit diamond mine located in Mirny, Eastern Siberia, Russia. The mine is 525 meters (1,722 ft) deep and has a diameter of 1,200 m (3,900 ft), and is the second largest excavated hole in the world, after Bingham Canyon Mine.
7. Chuquicamata, Copper Mine, Chile
Chuquicamata is also one of the biggest open pit copper mine in the world, located in the north of Chile, 215 km northeast of Antofagasta and 1,240 km north of the capital, Santiago. Its depth of 850 meters (2,790 ft) makes it one of the deepest open-pit mine in the world. It's an industry that has begun since 1882, although it started operating properly in 1911 when US capitals finished its construction. Today, the production reaches the 630 tons of fine copper every year.
