Binh Tay Market and Tour of Saigon's Chinatown (Chợ Lớn)
Binh Tay Market, located in Cholon, Saigon’s Chinatown, is one of the largest markets in the city. Here's how to visit:
Other than eating full meals and snacks on street food, there are few things I enjoy doing more than visiting local fresh markets when I travel. One of the most famous markets in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) is the central Ben Thanh Market, but I liked Binh Tay Market even better. The market is located in District 5, about a 15 minutes taxi ride from central Saigon, and it cost us just 102,000 Vietnamese Dong to get there.
After reading about the Binh Tay market, I decided to go there in the morning in an attempt to see the outside market street, that was supposed to be a wet fresh market. Even though I got a little later start that I had hoped for, and arrived to the market at around 8 am, luckily the outdoor fresh market was still bustling and happening. There were all sorts of interesting fresh ingredients available, from fresh seafood and meat to vegetables and fruit - and I love the action and flow of all the markets in Vietnam. While walking around and taking photos in the market, I eventually talked to a lady who was selling desserts and her kindness talked me into buying a bag of her Vietnamese dessert, which she called bap. I bought it and then sampled it during breakfast.
Hot and tired after walking around the outdoor section of the fresh wet market, I headed into the market and went to the food court for some breakfast. There are a few different stalls to choose from, but I finally settled on one that looked very busy and that many people were eating at. At first I had no idea I was ordering fried instant noodles, but even though I didn’t know what I was getting, it was actually extremely good. The fried beef was especially good. After breakfast, I walked around the indoor section of Binh Tay Market for a few more hours, enjoying the quantity and variety of things available. I noticed that the things for sale were similar to that of Ben Thanh Market, but I think everything at Binh Tay Market was cheaper.
After finishing up at the market, we then headed to do a little exploring around Cholon (Chợ Lớn). Our first stop was at Cha Tam church, a Catholic church located within Saigon’s Chinatown. We were there for just a few minutes before making the long hot walk to Phuoc An Hoi Quan, a Taoist pagoda temple. From the outside street the temple looks like just a home, but inside it was incredibly ornately decorated. It was well worth a stop, and I don’t think that it’s visited very frequently by tourist in Saigon, so it was quiet and peaceful.
After a few minutes exploring Phuoc An Hoi Quan, we continued on to Thien Hau Temple (Chùa Bà Thiên Hậu), one of the more famous Taoist temples in Saigon, Vietnam, and in Chinatown. The temple was extremely old, and on the outside it looked dark and mysterious. The inside of the temple included a shrine in the front, and then the courtyard was filled with incense burning in coils from the ceiling. It was another interesting temple to visit.
Finally, we made the walk to a restaurant for a dish called bánh tằm bì that I was recommended to try. I had never tried it before. It was a dish of thick noodles with toppings all smothered in a thick coconut cream sauce. It was a little sweet, but quite good.
Binh Tay Market is an amazing market to visit and explore when you’re in Saigon, Vietnam. If you want to see the morning wet market, make sure you go in the early morning. Also, if you have time, don’t miss some of the temples in Cholon.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam is on the move! The Ben Thanh Market in Saigon is the one of the largest and oldest Vietnam Markets. With over 3,000 vendors, Bến Thành is one of the best things to do in Saigon. You can find some of the best cheap shopping in Vietnam here all for incredible prices. The quality of the goods in this market are great and haggling is a must while you’re here! If you want to relax and avoid the bargaining, you can stay to the fixed pricing sections along the outer walls of Ben Thanh.
As far as a fake market in Vietnam is concerned, I would say you can find the highest quality knockoff goods here for the best prices. You can find everything you need in district 1 including food, drinks, Vietnamese culture and more. After visiting Ben Thanh Market, you might want to hang around district 1 Saigon and wait for the Ben Thanh night market to kick off around 8pm.
Cho Ben Thanh is easily the top night market in Vietnam, particularly in Ho Chi Minh City. We enjoyed the night market in Saigon a little bit better than the day market because there was space to move around. However, both markets sell very similar items. If you’re looking for things to do in Saigon, we highly recommend both the Ben Thanh Market and the Ben Thanh Night Market.

Exploring the Bustling Binh Tay Wholesale Market in Ho Chi Minh City
This vlog is about my visit in Binh Tay market in Ho Chi Minh City. It’s the city’s biggest market, located in China Town.
Chinatown in HCMC, Cho Lon Market, Binh Tay Market, Ho Chi Minh City tour
Binh Tay Market was built, or at least heavily financially supported by a Chinese businessman named Quách Đàm (1863--1927), originally from Chiu Chao. He operated his businesses under the trade name of Thông Hiệp. Quách Đàm was best known by his nickname Handicapped Thông among local Chinese. He started out very poor, making a living by recycling garbage and other used material; later, he began to enter into other types of businesses, in which he earned his fortune. There used to be a life-size bronze statue of Thông Hiệp standing right in the center of the Binh Tay Market, surrounded by four bronze lions, and four bronze dragons spitting water into the fountain under in which the statue of Thông was standing. The full size statue of Thông was replaced with a smaller glass altar sometime between 1976 and 1980 for unknown reasons.Nowadays,that statue is located in the Fine Art Museum of Ho Chi Minh city. The four bronze lions and dragons are still standing as of 2013.
Binh Tay Market is sitting on Thap Muoi Street, a four street-block span connecting Confucious Street to the North, and Hau Giang Street to the South, on the edge of District 6. Despite many wars over the years, Binh Tay Market has always been a major business hub not only for the local Vietnamese and Chinese, but also for the Vietnamese farmers trading daily goods coming from all directions of South Vietnam.

Binh Tay Market, constructed by the French in the 1880s, is located in the centre of Vietnam’s largest Chinatown district. Unlike Ben Thanh Market in District 1, this market mainly serves the local population with its extensive range of fresh fruits, vegetables, poultry, meat and seafood from regions across Vietnam. Also known as Cholon Chinatown Market, Binh Tay Market occupies a two-storey building along Thap Moui Street. Travellers can also find an assortment of handicrafts, lacquerware, and textiles that are sold in bulk, though goods are not varied compared to other (more touristy) markets in downtown Hanoi. Along with the interesting historical and cultural aspect of Cholon, Binh Tay Market is great for experiencing the local lifestyle and sampling unique Vietnamese-Chinese delicacies. A popular breakfast spot amongst locals, there are plenty of food stalls selling Vietnamese staples in the market including pho noodles, goi cuon (spring rolls), and com tam (broken rice) as well as Chinese-influenced delicacies such as banh bao, which are steamed buns filled with pork or chicken, onions, eggs, mushrooms, and vegetables. A courtyard is set the middle of the marketplace, where you can find a stone altar commemorating Guangdong-born philanthropist Quach Dam. Binh Tay Market is accessible within a 15-minute xe om (motorcycle taxi) ride from downtown Ho Chi Minh City. The best time to visit is in the morning as that’s when the locals come for breakfast and shop for fresh produce and household supplies. Binh Tay Market - Saigon's CHO LON Chinatown's HUGE Wholesale Market
Binh Tay Market is a large wholesale market located in Saigon''s Chinatown, known as Cho Lon.
For this video, I visited Binh Tay Market early one day to make sure I didn't miss the activity on the surrounding streets, as these street were busier than inside the market.
I first walked around the perimeter of Binh Tay Market and saw shops selling rices, noodles, sauces, dried vegetable, candies, and nuts, just to name a few items needed for the cooking of this magnificent cuisine.
There were some meat and seafood stalls, and lots of colourful fruits and vegetables. And what I love about the fruits here, they only sell what is in season.
On the inside of Binh Tay Market is a huge food hall where I stopped for breakfast. I enjoyed a fiery bowl of Bun Bo Hue, a noodle soup that comes from Central Vietnam, and one that is made with rice noodles, beef, pork sausage, herbs, spices, and a broth that is salty, sour, and spicy. A perfect breakfast to kickstart the day.
After breakfast I continues my exploration of Binh Tay Market seeing lots of clothes, shoes, and as many hats as I've ever seen in one spot!
I loved exploring Binh Tay Market especially the hassle free environment and the friendly vendors.
Binh Tay Market is an interesting window into every day life in Vietnam.

6. Saigon Cathedral of Notre Dame - With the French influence in Vietnam, the Notre Dame cathedral is a beautiful Catholic church. Attend a service or just visit.
7. Central Post Office - Designed by Gustave Eiffel, the Central Post Office in Ho Chi Minh City is an attraction mainly for its design and architecture. It’s a beautiful building.
8. War Remnants Museum - Although this is not one of the happiest attractions in Saigon, it’s a place to remember and honor the horrible events that are a result of a war.
9. Opera House - Right in Dong Khoi area, and there are still opera shows available.
10. Dong Khoi Street - This is the height of high end shopping in Saigon.
11. Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens - The zoo itself is not too great, but the beauty of the Saigon zoo is the botanical gardens, and the lush gardens, and taking a break from the city.
12. FITO Museum (Museum of Traditional Vietnamese Medicine) - I was quite impressed by the Vietnamese medicine private museum - very interactive and educational.
13. San Art Laboratory – If you love modern art, the San Art Laboratory is a great place to see and visit in Saigon.
14. Turtle Lake at Night - If you’re looking for some things to do at night in Saigon, head to Turtle Lake to chill out, relax, hang out with friends, and eat snacks.
15. Ben Thanh Market - One of the most famous things to do in Saigon District 1 is visit the Ben Thanh Market, one of the major central landmarks of the city.
16. Phu My Hung and Starlight Bridge - Located outside of central Ho Chi Minh City, Phu My Hung is a modern development, and a great place to walk around.
17. Water Puppet Show - Though originally from the north of Vietnam, water puppet shows are popular also in Saigon. I went to the Golden Dragon Water Puppet theater.
18. Museum of Vietnamese History - Probably one of the most extensive and important museum showing the history of Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City.
19. Rooftop Bar - Seeing Saigon from above offers a great perspective.
20. Fine Arts Museum - This was my favorite of all the museums in Saigon. The museum is housed in a well preserved building, and the art is amazing - located right in District 1 across the roundabout from Ben Thanh Market.
21. Jade Emperor Pagoda - Dedicated to the Jade Emperor, the pagoda has a real ancient feel to it, and it’s worth seeing when you visit.
22. Local Wet Market - One of my favorite things to do is visit a local fresh wet market, which you’ll find all over the city. The ingredients, food, and culture, all stand out at fresh markets.
23. Vietnamese Street Food - By my ultimate favorite activity in Saigon is eating street food, and there are an abundance of delicious Vietnamese street foods to sample.

It`s loud and dirty.
Inside the vendors are very agressiv, outside it`s a nightmare just to watch the vendors and what and how the offer.
