“I finally made a record that sounds like the music I listen to,” says singer/songwriter Allison Weiss, bursting at the seams to talk about her newest album, New Love—out Oct. 2 on SideOneDummy Records—even if that means gabbing on the phone while she’s getting her oil changed somewhere in Middle America. “In the past, my records were all very much about things that were happening to me right then in the moment. As I’ve grown up, I feel like I can deal with my own feelings in a way that I couldn’t when I was a teenager.”
Originally from a small town in Georgia, Weiss knew early on that her relationship with pop music wasn’t a casual one. Instead, it gave her endless butterflies and, no matter how many songs she listened to, she could never fill her Top 40 love tank. Whether she pressed her ear to the wall of her older brother’s bedroom to hear the latest Green Day song or played the radio while she was asleep so she could soak in the melodies through osmosis, the attraction was immediate and undeniable.
After high school, Weiss studied art at University of Georgia in Athens, but she soon started learning more about music by performing at local coffee shops than sitting in stuffy lecture halls. The plucky teen started developing a pretty impressive local following, playing larger and larger venues, until she ultimately decided to evolve her passion into a full-time profession. However, with heaps of ambition but little connection to the industry, what’s a girl to do? Um, do it herself, of course.
“When I was starting out, I didn’t know about finding managers or booking agents or any of that stuff,” Weiss says, looking back. “I wasn’t trying to find a record label. I knew what I wanted to do and I saw I could do it by myself without immediately having to rely on somebody else, so I’m gonna do it that way.” Whether driven by unbridled enthusiasm or indisputable impatience, Weiss immediately put pen to paper and managed to release three EPs and her debut full-length album (2009’s …Was Right All Along) before leaving Athens for Brooklyn. However, it was her second LP, 2013’s Say What You Mean, which really broke through the underground and positioned Weiss as an important new voice in the indie-pop scene, thanks to songs like “Making It Up” and “Wait For Me.”
After Say What You Mean, which was inspired by a breakup that nearly tore her apart, Weiss was left wondering, “What’s the point of anything because everything’s gonna end?” Sounds defeatist, but it’s also a real emotion that everyone goes through when a romantic chapter ends. However, Weiss took that skepticism and harnessed it into her music, saying, “I wanna be the person who writes love songs about real, legitimate relationships and not just fairy-tale endings.”
That air of relatability wafts throughout all the songs on New Love, which was inspired by Weiss’s recent move to Los Angeles and, wait for it, a new love. The change in geographic scenery can be heard in “Golden Coast,” which was co-written with fellow folk-rocker Jenny Owen Youngs, and tackles the trepidation that often comes with making a major life change that’s necessary but nerve wrecking nevertheless. Then there’s “Back To Me,” which is the kind of hopeful pop song with upbeat melodies but heartbreaking lyrics about the one who got away and, sadly, isn’t ever coming back.
Weiss can’t wait to play new songs like “Who We Are” and “Good Way” live, which is totally convenient because she’s likely to be on tour for the rest of the year. She’s also excited to reconnect with her fans, continue to write irreverent pop songs, and possibly be a light for anyone who’s still figuring out their place is this big, bad world. “I started writing my music as a young person who was uncomfortable in her own skin,” Weiss says. “Life gets hard, love gets complicated, and, thankfully, we've all got our favorite songs to say the things we might not be able to say on our own. If you hear something in my songs that reminds you of yourself, then I'm doing my job right.”

Washington, DC: The Forgotten Huge Lead Water Crises!
The discovery of widespread lead contamination in Washington, D.C. drinking water resulted in a U.S. Congressional investigation that damaged the scientific reputation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), left thousands of children with lifelong health risks, and led to a re-evaluation of the use of chloramine in public drinking-water systems. Marc Edwards, an expert in plumbing corrosion, discovered lead levels at least '83 times higher' than the accepted safe limit while performing research into premature pipe corrosion for the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (WASA). He found that the decision to change from using chlorine to chloramine as a treatment chemical had caused the spike in lead levels.
After the Washington Post ran a series of front-page articles about Edwards's findings, resulting in widespread public concern, the United States House of Representatives conducted an investigation. The House found that the CDC had made scientifically indefensible claims in a report that had indicated there was no risk from the high lead levels.
The Post's investigation uncovered evidence of widespread misreporting of lead levels at water agencies across the United States, leading to regulatory crackdowns and changes in Environmental Protection Agency policies.
The problem was addressed in 2004 by adding additional treatments to the water, preventing the chloramine from dissolving lead in the water mains, solder joints, and fixtures.
In 2010, the CDC reported that 15,000 homes in the Washington, D.C. area might still have water supplies with dangerous levels of lead.

Sarah Rose Summers of Nebraska crowned her successor Cheslie Kryst of North Carolina at the end of the event. Kryst will represent the United States at Miss Universe 2019.

In the early 1980s, the majority of cocaine being shipped to the United States, landing in Miami, was coming through the Bahamas and Dominican Republic. Soon there was a huge glut of cocaine powder in these islands, which caused the price to drop by as much as 80 percent. Faced with dropping prices for their illegal product, drug dealers made a decision to convert the powder to crack, a solid smokeable form of cocaine, that could be sold in smaller quantities, to more people. It was cheap, simple to produce, ready to use, and highly profitable for dealers to develop. As early as 1981, reports of crack were appearing in Los Angeles, San Diego, Miami, Houston, and in the Caribbean.
This sign posted outside a tire store in New Orleans, Louisiana informs the public that the business owner will call the police if prostitution (cat selling) or the selling of crack occurs in front of the establishment.
Initially, crack had higher purity than street powder. Around 1984, powder cocaine was available on the street at an average of 55 percent purity for $100 per gram, and crack was sold at average purity levels of 80-plus percent for the same price. In some major cities, such as New York, Philadelphia, Houston, Los Angeles, and Detroit, one dosage unit of crack could be obtained for as little as $2.50.
Crack first began to be used on a large scale in Los Angeles in 1984.[1][3] The distribution and use of the drug exploded that same year. By the end of 1986, it was available in 28 states and the District of Columbia. According to the 1985–1986 National Narcotics Intelligence Consumers Committee Report, crack was available in New Orleans, Memphis, Philadelphia, New York City, Houston, San Diego, San Antonio, Baltimore, Portland, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis-Saint Paul, St. Louis, Atlanta, Oakland, Kansas City, Miami, Newark, Boston, San Francisco, Albany, Buffalo, and Dallas.

The Supreme Court did not change that decision, but applied the strict scrutiny test for the First Amendment of the Constitution and said corporations could not be banned from making electioneering communications.

Emile Berliner started marketing his disc records in 1889. These records were five inches in diameter, and offered only in Europe. At first, the use of his disc records was leased to various toy companies, which made toy phonographs or gramophones to play them on. The audio fidelity of these earliest discs was well below that of contemporary phonograph cylinder records.
In 1892 he incorporated the United States Gramophone Company in Washington D.C.. This company offered the first disc records (now seven inches in diameter and no longer intended as a toy) in November 1894 on the Berliner Gramophone label. After various mergers, divisions, lawsuits, and injunctions, this company was to give rise to the Victor Talking Machine Company in the United States in late 1900. In 1929, Victor was purchased by RCA.
E. Berliner Gramophone of Canada was established in 1899 in Montreal [in the Aqueduct Street building of Northern Electric] and first marketed records and gramophones the following year. In 1904, the company received its charter as the Berliner Gram-o-phone Company of Canada. Early recordings were imported from masters recorded in the United States until a recording studio in Montreal was established in 1906. The Berliner name as a record label lasted longest in Canada, until 1924 when it was bought out by USA's Victor, becoming RCA Victor in 1929. Berliner Gram-o-phone's facilities in Montreal, a complex of buildings at 1001 rue Lenoir and 1050 rue LaCasse in the St-Henri district, became home to RCA Victor Canada over the next several decades,[1] developing and producing such high-tech products as microwave radio relay systems, communication satellites, television broadcast equipment, etc. Since the dissolution of RCA in 1986, the Lenoir building has been turned into a multi-use office/commercial building, but the Lacasse facility is now The Emile Berliner Museum,[2] documenting the history of the man, his company and the building complex. The historic Studio Victor located there is still an active recording studio.

I received some good information from victrolaman that seems to clear things up somewhat.. However I still do not understand how you can get a patent dated 1897 when the E. Berliner Gramophone of Canada was established in 1899.. Also Shepard was known to have recorded as early as 1898 as per your Library of Congress.. Anyway this is the information victrolaman gave me.. Harry Taylor is actually Burt Shepherd. He recorded this record for Eldridge Johnson at the Victor Studios in July of 1901, both a 7 and 10. You obviously have the 7 version. Johnson shared masters with his former boss, Emile Berliner who went to Canada during the big lawsuit involving patent disputes, and Johnson bought the Company to protect his investments, and later formed the Victor talking machine Company of Camden, New Jersey. Burt Shepard (?--1913) began his career as a female impersonator before joining a minstrel troupe in 1874. On records, Shepard, a baritone, specialized in comic monologues and songs, projected with a wry sense of humor. On stage he frequently accompanied himself on the piano. Shepard made recordings as early as 1898 for the Berliner Gramophone Company. In 1900 he began a six-year association with E. R. Johnson and Victor Records. Animated stereoscopic portraits of Union soldiers serving with the 7th Regiment New York State Militia at Camp Cameron in Washington, D.C., during the Civil War in 1861. All photographs are attributed to Mathew Brady and possibly taken by his photographer George Barnard. The African Americans in many scenes are probably camp servants.
