South Dakota Rides—Visit Bear Butte State Park Riding From Sturgis to Highway 212
While Sturgis is known for its 24-hour party scene during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, riders can still take breaks throughout the week with an afternoon ride from Sturgis to Highway 212. With its straight and wide roads just north of the Black Hills, this route is ideal for new riders or those looking for an easier, smoother trip. Riders can even stop and visit Bear Butte State Park, a sacred mountain of the native Lakota, along the way

LET'S RIDE! - STURGIS MOTORCYCLE RALLY
#CusterStatePark #MtRushmore #Sturgis #motorcycles #Sturgis2019 #SturgisMotorcycleRally
This is HB Maverick and we are in the Sturgis area. Besides going to the events at the motorcycle rally, we will explore the awesome riding roads in the area. Sturgis is nestled in the Black Hills of South Dakota with Mt. Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Monument nearby. Also in the area is Custer State Park with the buffalo that you just saw, and the Badlands are nearby as well.
Let’s go!
Custer State Park
We took a morning ride through Custer State Park. This is a very large park with several different roads perfect for motorcycles! We saw goats, deer, and buffalo near and on the road. We rode through lots of twisty mountain roads, one-way roads, and through several tunnels. It was quite the ride!
Mt. Rushmore
Almost everyone who rides to Sturgis makes the stop at Mt. Rushmorel Here you see the carvings of four of our nation’s finest former presidents - George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. What an impressive place to visit!
Brewery
During our ride my bike stalled on a turn and my friends disappeared! Well, there is only one thing to do – stop at the nearest brewery and have lunch! Somehow, I got immersed into a bridesmaid party going on at the brewery and all I can say is “What happens in Sturgis, stays in Sturgis!”
Sturgis, South Dakota
Black Hills Harley-Davidson is in Rapid City and is one of the largest Harley dealers in the Midwest. They have tons of vendors setup for the Sturgis Rally and one of the vendors was GoPro! My friend had bought the Hero 7 Black the day before and showed us how smooth the play back was. So, of course I went and upgraded my GoPro as well!
Riding into Sturgis and experiencing the rally was the highlight of the trip. Motorcycles everywhere, lots of beautiful custom motorcycles, biker women, bars with live music every other building it seemed, concert pavilions, and just a whole party-time festival! I may even have had a beer or two!
Conclusion
After three days in Sturgis and the surrounding area it was time to leave my friends and start the solo ride home. They would be taking a route through the Northwest U.S. and my route would take me through Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, and Arizona.
We will see YOU on the next adventure!

2015: Return to Custer SD after almost 40 years....fixed
On the way back from driving the Wild Life loop, I stopped here in Custer to walk the length of bikes parked along the middle of the street. My first introduction to Custer South Dakota came in July 1977. On that summer evening, only three bikes parked on main street. Coming out of a tavern we saw a BMW from Nebraska parked near our bikes. Soon, the owner and his wife arrived. We started talking. Then, they suggested we should party at his place down the street. NOTE:I checked out that motel as I came into town.
After arriving here in just three days from N.H., we had planned a peaceful dinner, followed by simple rest day. However, due to dubious decisions made that night, that all turned into something quite different.
That said, I will always remember the night spent in down town Custer S.D. And the two trips up to Beaver Lake Camp Ground early the next morning: First, to safely deliver my buddy to our camp site. Then, to fetch his bike back several hours later. At 2am with my buddy slumped down on back of my bike, I was obviously quite concerned about what Custer law enforcement was thinking as we negotiated the length of Main Street!
The next day I was feeling okay. However, as it turned out I should never have attempted maintenance on the bike. Indeed, the ensuing stupidity resulted in me having to borrow my friend's bike for a trip to (what is now) Black Hills Power Sports in Rapid City. That solo trip on a strange machine involved its own set of interesting negative circumstances which at least were not of my making. I guess not everyone in the area liked bikes or bikers. Those guys must have been romantics, because they seemed to want to marry me to a tree.
The balance of the trip went relatively well. I think the only other negative aspect was a kinked chain as we crossed Nebraska. Z1s came with huge chains. But unlike today's smaller O-ring chains, they required almost constant attention. The other minor issue was that unlike the fuel injection systems on modern motorcycles, the Z1's carburettors could not deal with changes in elevation. At Independence pass (12095 feet) in Colorado, the bike would barely run.

August 2015: Blackhills Sturgis Rally: (Part 3)
Custer SD Revisited
Sorry about the low light levels in most of this video. The root cause may have something to do with that huge ominous looking gray cloud hanging over the town. (Almost the entire time I spent in the area there was weather warning of sudden downpours with potential flash flooding.) But I felt not one drop of rain the entire time. The other:the GOPRO Hero white which seems determined to err on the low side of exposure times. . Nevertheless all that HD chrome seems to stand out quite well.

Those guys must have been romantics, because they seemed to want to marry me to a tree. Anyway, I told my friend when i got back that his bike made a great stunt bike.
The balance of the trip went relatively well. I think the only other problem was a seized link in the chain as we crossed Nebraska. Z1s came with huge chains. Unlike today's smaller O-ring chains, they required almost constant attention. The other minor issue was that unlike the fuel injection systems on modern motorcycles, the Z1's carburetors could not deal with changes in elevation. At Independence pass (12095 feet) in Colorado, the bike would barely run. But it had to. Because, with freezing rain falling at the summit we had our hands full just keeping them upright.

ABOUT BIKE FREE
Pedaling more than 5,000 miles from Maryland's Chesapeake Bay to the California coast, bicyclists Paul Lebelle and Adam Burkowske have joined the
movement to share the goodness of cycling with kids -- specifically, the kids of our military families.
Paul and Adam started Bike Free (bikefree.org), a non-profit charity, whose goal is to get 1,000 bikes and helmets to military kids.
The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have taken a heavy toll on kids growing up in military families. Parents come back wounded or don't come back at all. Kids are also facing parents' multiple deployments, says Adam.
We know that being outside in the fresh air, sunshine, and having physical activity is not only good for your health, but also raises your spirit, says Paul.
Both Paul and Adam's families have military backgrounds. Adam's brother served on the USS George Washington and is now stationed in San Diego. One
of Paul's grandfathers graduated from the Naval Academy and captained submarines. Paul's other grandfather was former NY Giants Kyle Rote whose older brother, Jack, sacrificed his life at Iwo Jima and received the Purple Heart.
Military kids are the forgotten victims of war. Bringing the joy, freedom, and fun of riding a bicycle to these kids is what Bike Free is all about.
For further information or to help support their mission, Paul and Adam can be reached through the Bike Free website, bikefree.org.
