Europe 2019 (Pt. 73) - Black Cab Tour of the Troubles in Belfast, Northern Ireland (UK)
August 14, 2019 - The Troubles is putting it lightly. This low-level war was waged from 1969 to 1998 between the Irish Republican Army and the United Kingdom, and Belfast was ground zero. The Troubles stemmed from many causes, but one large one was the British colonization of Northern Ireland (thus making it part of the UK), and the Irish resistance to this, for a unified nation on the Isle of Ireland.
Much is made of the Troubles being a war between the Catholics and Protestants, but this is not the case; it just so happened to be that most from the United Kingdom were Protestant, whereas most of the Irish were Catholic.
Over 20 years have passed, and even though it's not nearly as heated as it once was, with clashes and bombings and the like, there is still tension in the air, particularly in the districts of town where you can find the ever-changing murals, the Peace Wall, the Clonard Martyrs Memorial Garden, Sinn Féin office, and the gates between the Catholic and Protestant neighbourhoods of Belfast, JUST IN CASE.

Belfast, Northern Ireland: A Black Cab Tour of Falls Road
More info about travel to Belfast: A cab is the best way to tour Belfast's sectarian neighborhoods and their gripping political murals. Just west of downtown, Falls Road (Catholic) and the Shankhill Road (Protestant) are two well-known areas. And your ride can come with an education; for a reasonable hourly fee, many cabbies give visitors impromptu tours that will give you insights into the Troubles, a conflict that is thankfully much less volatile than it has been in the past.

Black Taxis - Full Documentary
Brendan, Gerald and Tom are former volunteers of the Irish Republican Army. For them, and for all Irish republicans, the time of the armed struggle is now over.
- But how to live in peace after thirty years of war and sacrificed life?
- How then rebuild his life that under the company, it remains a criminal?
- And how to accept that peace does not look like victory?
Today they are drivers of Black Taxi
Republicans in the ghettos of Belfast.
Black Taxis are one of the strongest symbols of resistance. They were created at the beginning of the war, when the British government decided to suspend the bus service which served these neighborhoods.
In Belfast, the buses were driven by Protestants, who refused to risk their lives in these republican areas. The people were so organized, they bought old taxis to make their transit.
These taxis are still today their privileged transportation, 7/7, from morning to night, plying the same route.
Riding a Black Taxi is one of the few possible jobs for former prisoners. Moreover,
this Community transport system was also created in order to give them work.
These trips represent confinement and lack of horizon of a generation that has spent the first half of his life in war, in combat or in prison.
This film shows the loneliness, the loneliness of a day of war and the passing history and

Yes the rocket is red. Any visit to Belfast must include a trip of the historic regions of the city. After this 12 km trip...I walked it to capture the real feel of the city and see more murals. Took all day - but a drink at every pub kept me going. A great day!

Things to Do in Belfast - Belfast Tour - Belfast Attractions
For all those who are coming to Belfast soon and still didn't make a plan for the places they have to visit then this is the video for you because we have brought those hot spots of Belfast, Northern Ireland, and the things to do and the places to visit to try and help a little bit.
When you first arrive in Belfast - if you are coming by bus or train - you will arrive at the Europa station where you will be landing in the heart of Belfast and should then get ready for the different things you are going to do and see.
Just across the street from the famous Europa station, there is the oldest bar in Belfast city, the Crown Liquor Bar, so you could start your day with warming up with Guinness or you could even leave that part of the day to the end, to when you will come back to the same station to go back where you came from.
From the different interesting things to do in Belfast is to visit the Grand Opera House and attend any of the shows which might be taking place there. The Grand Opera House is on the other side of the street from the bar and there are always loads of shows there, so definitely go ahead with it and book yourself something to watch, you will definitely enjoy your time there and will find a different kind of thing to do in the evening.
So, getting done with the first part and which is all related to the landing location, there are still other places in Belfast which one should visit. One of the things that are considered a must to visit in this city is Belfast City Hall which was built in the very late 1800 and which we consider a really different kind of building. For those who are willing to visit Belfast City Hall - which we believe lots of people already have this on their plan - there are tours held in the morning which will take you through all the rooms of the building for free, and there is also a new exhibition which was added recently about the history of Belfast and the key events of the city which we believe is really good for the kids as well (
Leaving Belfast City Hall behind, there is one thing which we believe is important - for women the most :-) - which is shopping. If you want to do a little bit of shopping in Belfast then you have to take our advice and go to the Royal Avenue which is considered one of the main shopping streets in Belfast with different local as well as international brands and there are also some coffee shops and restaurants for those who want to take a rest from their shopping, and there is also the favorite Victoria Square shopping center which carries lots of different shops inside that will give people the chance to buy everything from there, as well as the top floor which is all about restaurants. Lastly, there is also the Castle Court which is one of the original shopping centers in Belfast, Northern Ireland, which carries all the different types of shops that you might be searching for and again there is an eating area with loads of fast food restaurants.
We are suggesting those places which people could visit as some kind of knowing more about the culture and history of Belfast, and we will also suggest those places which will give people a suggestion for a place which they want to visit at night. If you want to have a place to spend your night at then you could head to the Cathedral Quarter which is filled with hotels, restaurants, and bars which you could choose one from and spend some time at ( One of our favorite places is The Merchant Hotel which is the only five stars hotel in Belfast and which is great for those who want to spend their night in a different kind of way like having a cup of tea or enjoying a cocktail.
Just beside The Merchant Hotel there is the famous Anne's Cathedral, which also happens to be one of the most famous cathedrals in Belfast which is really old and one could get inside and have a tour in this old beautiful building (
The best thing about Belfast is that everything is within a walking distance, so walking away from The Merchant Hotel and Anne's Cathedral, one will reach the Albert clock which is a really old monument in Belfast ( and also for those who will get straight across, they will get to the Titanic Quarter where one could enjoy the museum and get the chance to see this area across the river (
The last thing we would recommend for those searching for something to do in Belfast is book a show or performance at the Ulster Hall which hosts a lot of musical events like the classical musical events with the orchestra.
If you want to find more about Belfast then Visit Belfast is the place for you which is a tourist information center.

The Wall (Belfast Short documentary)
’The Wall’ details the history of the Belfast peace line between the communities of the Falls and Shankill Roads. It is illustrated through the personal story of filmmaker, Seán Murray whose family charts its history from polarising sides of the divide.
BEST OF BELFAST - NORTHERN IRELAND WEEKEND TRIP - vlog
Welcome to Belfast, Northern Ireland! We take the bus from Dublin to Belfast to spend the weekend in the capital city. Whether you are here for the weekend, St Pattys day, or a day trip - be sure to check out the street art, history tours, and visit the Titanic museum.
First stop is to check into our hotel, Ten Square Hotel which is conveniently located next to the city's center point - the historic City Hall.
We visit the Peace Walls, murals which showcase the city's history and future. We also visit the Titanic Museum, a must see for visitors to learn the history of Belfast. The city's economy was based on ship building and the Titanic was built here. The museum tells the story of the ill-fated voyage with interactive exhibits. Belfast still is a shipping town, but now tourism and film are the new industries. Outside of the museum is the filming studio for Game of Thrones which is filmed in Northern Ireland.
Belfast has fascinating history and is one of the most artistic cities that is undergoing a transformation from the last few decades. It's also affordable with many free walking tours and activities, easy to get to from Dublin, filled with friendly locals, and less touristy than many other capital cities.

Traveling to Belfast, Northern Ireland
In June 2016, I led a group of students on a tour of UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands. Our tour focused on conflict resolution and culminated with EF Tours' Global Student Leadership Summit on Human Rights in the Hague. Join us as we embark on this remarkable journey.
N. Ireland Day 5: Streets of Belfast
Thought it would be a good idea to search for the famous Belfast murals that speak more than words about the political climate in Northern Ireland. The murals are symbols of the past and present, so the streets still stand divided. The violence may have stopped, but the emotions that have driven The Troubles are very much alive. Peace has been made, but walls still stand. I found most of the nationalist murals (pro-Ireland), depicting political prisoners, heroes who've died fighting for their cause, and global icons of a campaign against oppression. For them, there are no calls for peace if peace means giving up. On the unionist side (pro-England), murals depict peace, and a call for cooperation. To this day, Northern Ireland belongs to the U.K.
