GHOST OF ~BLACKFRIARS BRIDGE ~LONDON ~U.K
The bridges over the Thames all have reputations for being magnets for those wishing to commit suicide, and this forms the background for one of Elliott O'Donnell's ghost stories in his Ghosts off-caution (1932).
As a post-man was walking across Blackfriars Bridge early one autumn morning, a tall woman in black and a policeman were the only people in sight: Suddenly the woman commenced climbing on to the wall of the bridge. Feeling sure she was about to commit suicide, the postman ran towards her, to try to prevent her, but was too late, for she had disappeared. However, off came his coat, and he was about to jump into the river, to try to save her, when the policeman, who, as he must have seen what had just taken place, appeared to be somewhat callous, stopped him. 'Put on your coat again,' he said, catching him by the arm. 'It is of no use jumping in. What you saw was no living person, it was a ghost.' He claimed to have seen exactly the same thing before, and suggested that if the postman did not believe him he should come back at the same time the next day. The same hour the following morning, found him again on the bridge, and the very same thing occurred . . . 'Well,' the same policeman who was standing by, observed, `didn't I tell you so? I've seen her do the same thing, at the same hour, for seven consecutive mornings. I'm told it won't happen again (it's what they call periodical haunting) for a good many years, and I'm thankful for that, as it's a bit trying on one's nerves.' See also KINGSWAY, p.235
From the book ~London Lore: The Legends and Traditions of the World's Most Vibrant City~By Steve Roud
The bridge became internationally notorious in June 1982, when the body of Roberto Calvi, a former chairman of Italy's largest private bank, was found hanging from one of its arches with five bricks and around $14,000 in three different currencies in his pockets. Calvi's death was initially treated as suicide, but he was on the run from Italy accused of embezzlement and in 2002 forensic experts concluded that he had been murdered by the Mafia, to whom he was indebted. In 2005, five suspected members of the Mafia were tried in a Rome court for Calvi's murder, but all were acquitted in June 2007 for lack of evidence.
The City of London Corporation has recently developed a Suicide Prevention Action Plan which has highlighted a need to do more to reduce suicides from bridges in the City of London. Signs with the Samaritans’ free phone number have been placed on each City of London Bridge. The additional bridges would be Blackfriars, Tower,Southwark and the Millennium Bridge.
Blackfriars Bridge Child Murder, April 1867
The clearly insane Mary Ann Hathaway aged forty-five and married was up in court on the charge of wilful murder of her daughter, Mary Hathaway. Her behaviour of late had been very strange and was passed off by friends and family, as she had been in a lunatic asylum, twice before. She walked over Blackfriars Bridge and simply tossed the child over the parapet, thinking she would hear a splash as it entered the Thames, instead heard a dull thud as the poor little mite landed on a barge, then died of its injuries.
2/ Blackfriars Bridge, (Headless Corpse) January 1902
The lower portion of a female was discovered in the Thames near to Blackfriars Bridge. The limbs were nude, apart from the pair of stockings, which puts pay to the suicide theory. A post-mortem examination showed that the limbs had been in the water for a long time, and due to the decomposition it was hard to say if they had been chopped from the upper part of the body, or caught in the propellers of riverside barges. (Was she ever identified?)

This film was made by Robert W. Paul (3 October 1869 – 28 March 1943) who was an early pioneer of British film.
In 1896, he pioneered in the UK a system of projecting motion pictures onto a screen, using a self-developed system. The use of his 'Theatrograph' in music halls up and down the country popularised early cinema in Britain.
